Road Scholar
Program #15879RJ
16 Days | 15 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderately Challenging
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

This program exceeded expectations and was amazingly well organized.

This is the second time I took this program in two years. As was true the first time, the program design and execution were flawless. The leader and support staff are among the best I have ever experienced. We visited 13 of the 26 Cantons. Enjoyed traditional Swiss, French, German and Italian food. Transportation included 31 train rides including cog wheel and narrow gauge, several buses and 2 lake boat cruises. The photo opportunities are endless. Great value. No regrets.

Switzerland is a very small country with four distinct languages and cultures. We experienced the country not in an insulated tour bus, but traveled as the Swiss do by public transportation. The scenery was breathtaking. The trains and buses leave when the second hand reaches the twelve. The food is wonderful and you can drink from the fountains in the public squares. The hotels were spotless and centrally located with views of mountains or lakes. If you read carefully all the information and understand the trip is designated for "hardly explorers who enjoy a physical challenge" then this is a most wonderful trip. Switzerland is a very expensive country. Let RS do all the logistics and get the reward of really getting to know the country. It is an extraordinary value for your money.

A wonderful program but very challenging getting on and off steep train steps, being on time is a must, Swiss people really keep to time, up to the minute keeping a very tight schedule. Being prepared to haul you own bags on and off trains is not easy especially when connections are tight. Also important that if you have any physical disability, walk with a stick, not agile in getting up and down steps this is not a trip for you. thanks to the program leaders my husband was helped in keeping the schedule.

This Program exceeded my expectations in every way. I highly recommend it. Considering the high cost of living in Switzerland, this Tour is a bargain.

We have been on several bike trips with Road Scholar so this program was a departure for us but we were pleasantly surprised and very pleased with the program. Beautiful scenery and very knowledgeable guides along with the wonderful trains of Swizerland made this a first class trip.

One of the best programs we have been on. Thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie, efficient transportation system, amazingly enthusiastic guides, excellent food and centrally located hotels. Highly recommend it.

This is a terrific itinerary, but pay attention to the Moderately Challenging activity level. There is lots of walking, many steps, uncountable hills and cobblestones and some 4-minute train connections with luggage unloading and reloading. That said, bring your smallest, lightest suitcase with a minimal wardrobe and enjoy a travel experience that you will long remember. The Road Scholar guides were the world's best, the hotels delightful, the views spectacular, the lectures well-prepared and delivered by experts. If Switzerland is on your bucket list (and it should be), book this trip now.

Switzerland by Rail was a wonderful opportunity to see my number one choice on my bucket list as well as visit the country via large cities and smaller, but beautiful stops along the railway. I was never disappointed by any of the stops we made. The hotels were very clean and quaint fitting into the life style of the area. Our food choices were regional favorites. Most importantly, the people on our tour made it fun and most memorable for me. Many thanks to our leaders who were very organized and made the tour the best!

Switzerland was more beautiful than I expected. This trip covered all aspects of the country; history, economy, geography, gastronomy, religion, and culture. Could not have been a more enjoyable experience. All this and a train lovers dream way of travel with split second accuracy. Lots of exercise to combat the cheese and chocolate indulgences. A must go!

An excellent program for train lovers and scenery enthusiasts who enjoy seeing new places and experiencing new parts of the world. My wife's two brothers and their wives had never done Road Scholar programs before; they seemed pleased with their experiences overall. We felt that this was the best of our five Road Scholar trips. Would do it again any time.

"Splendors of Switzerland by Rail" is a really good introduction to both the country and its wonderful railroad system. The scenery is wonderful, the cities are inviting, and the railroads are an example of how things should work. It is an expensive country, but the fee structure of the trip makes that manageable.

This was one of the best touring vacations I've ever been on. The Swiss countryside and cities we visited were so beautiful and awe-inspiring. The RS group leaders and assistants were great and made it hassle-free. I thoroughly enjoyed it and want to go back some day.

This is a very well organized and comprehensive trip of a very large part of Switzerland. One will come away knowing a lot about the country and having seen much of the considerable beauty of Switzerland. That said, the pace of this trip is very fast, to the point of being hectic, with a lot of rushing to make trains and buses. If rushing does not present a problem, you will enjoy this trip. If you prefer a relaxed pace, this is not a trip for you.

Our introduction to the beauty of Switzerland at Hotel Royal was perfect, with a beautiful view of Lake Lucerne, lovely dining room and food fit for royalty. Each hotel at Brig, St. Moritz, Locarno, and Interlaken provided beauty, warmth and luxury. Three nights in each hotel was restful, and we enjoyed settling into each city for three days and nights in order to enjoy and appreciate the ambiance of each Swiss Canton.

What a program! Walking, riding busses, intercity trains, excursion trains, steamships...all on a schedule as precise as a fine swiss watch. Super hotels, food, lectures, everything. One of the best RS program's we've ever taken.

This program couldn't have been better. If there were a higher rating than excellent I would have used it. The leaders, Andrea, Rauati, Cathy and Fabienne were great They were friendly, helpful and full of knowledge. This was one of the best programs I have been on. Many of the train connections were tight, but we all made them due to our leaders. You must be able to walk at a good pace to keep up! There was free time in every city to explore on your own. This let you do what you wanted-walk, museums, shop or just relax. Every hotel had excellent staff and good food. The experience was wonderful.

Splendors of Switzerland by Rail proved to be a wonderful experience. The scenery was fabulous and the quality of the educational presentations exceptional. Andrea John is an outstanding tour leader who possesses a wealth of knowledge about Switzerland. Her warmth and enthusiasm as well as her attention to every detail provided participants with a most enjoyable, worry free trip. As participants, we could focus our attention on the information and esthetics of the program. Ruati Erni and Susanne Felder proved to be charming and knowledgeable assistants, whose company we also enjoyed. Debb Christenson answered a myriad of questions from the group and kept track of any stragglers. This important function kept the group together and on time. The leadership team worked very well together. The Swiss "guest speakers" were all very well versed in their subjects, spoke excellent English and certainly enriched the program.

I picked this tour because it was one of the most highly rated programs offered by Road Scholar; the rating of 4.9 was in every way justified. Because of the multilingual, multicultural character of Switzerland, it felt like we had visited several countries. It is also one of the cleanest, most efficient and orderly places on earth. The organization of the tour was exceptional, and the congeniality and punctuality of my fellow travelers further enhanced the travel experience.

A wonderful adventure through Switzerland. It is hard to imagine a more spectacular and beautiful trip. I love Switzerland - the cute houses, the minimal automobile impact, the use of public transportation, the aesthetic values and appreciation I noticed nearly everywhere. If one can handle the winter it must be a good life, and gives me hope for humanity.

This was a great trip with lots of train riding. The hotels and meals were just fine. The Road Scholar staff was most helpful and, with one exception, the lectures were well done. This is a beautiful country and our visit to various sites was always exciting and well planned. We recommend this trip. Beware: be prepared for walking, some uphill.
