I enjoyed the program very much. This would also make a good spring program.

This was an outstanding program! Being able to actually see a cahow and to meet David and Helga were very special. The program was wonderful, although tiring - - but since I can sleep anywhere (as on a picnic table), I was okay! Bermuda, itself, is just so beautiful and Kaitland was a great leader. The accommodations were very basic, but okay - - after all, we didn't go for luxury accommodations, but it would be nice if they could invest in new shower heads! It's really one of the best programs I've attended. Pat Fitzgerald, King William, VA.

My husband and I chose this program both because we hoped to see a cahow, and because we wanted to meet David and Helga Wingate and have the opportunity to hear first hand about the discovery of nesting cahows in 1951, more than 300 years after they had been thought to be extinct, and to hear about the Wingates' efforts to create a living museum on Nonsuch Island, restoring it as a cahow habitat and restoring the native flora and fauna. We had a wonderful time, especially on Nonsuch Island. The program is accurately characterized as Active. The accommodations at BIOS are pretty basic - it is a research institute, not a luxury hotel. Food was served cafeteria-style, and was generally well-prepared.

This program has many virtues but the highlight is the amazing account of Dr. David Wingate's participation in 1951 as a teenager in the discovery of the Cahow, considered to have been extinct for over 320 years, and his perseverance, patience, and ingenuity in preserving and nurturing the Cahow population. We also met Jeremy Madeiros, his successor, who has been instrumental in translocating some of the birds. The most memorable moment was seeing an illusive Cahow that was nesting. David's wife Helga co-lead the tours, and she enlightened us on the copious flora. David and Helga are warm and gracious hosts and world class treasures. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity not to be missed. Ron from Arlington, VA
