This being my first Road Scholar event, I wasn't sure what to expect, other than the program topic. Much to my delight, everything, the accommodations, the food, the other participants, and the instructor, Greg Athnos, exceeded my expectations. A short trip to see local covered bridges near the event site in NH, and a longer excursion to a museum in VT along with a stop at a church for a private organ recital, as well as a few other stops along the way, were among the highlights of the week. The main focus, 2000 Years of Western Culture, was accomplished through lecture, slides, and live music by three local performers.

This program dealt with music from 1600-1900. First were Baroque creations: orchestra, oratorio and opera: additionally, we viewed an impressive power point presentation on Rembrandt. Then on to Classical, especially how to listen to a symphony. I heard Beethoven’s 5th with new insight and emotion. This was followed by the music of Schubert, Chopin, Berlioz, Liszt, Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky. Greg Athnos, our instructor, was a joy to experience. He has been a Road Scholar instructor for 37 years and has taught at Pilgrim Pines for more than 20 years. I highly recommend any program presented by Greg. ~~ In addition to the music, we had a day-long field trip to Bennington, VT. At Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church, we were treated to a half-hour organ recital, much of which was by request. We also visited the Bennington Center for the Arts and Covered Bridge Museum. Having already visited six covered bridges near Pilgrim Pines, this was a treat; NH covered bridges are Town Lattice construction and I was fascinated with the displays and extensive reference materials. There were binders for each state having covered bridges: name of bridge, location, construction type, date built, restoration or destruction, costs, etc. At one time there were over 10,000 authentic covered bridges in the US. Now there are fewer than 900, the majority (over 500) in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Vermont. New Hampshire has 54. Before returning to Pilgrim Pines, we had time to visit the Bennington Museum to view works by Grandma Moses. I was impressed by the larger-than-life horse sculpture on the grounds. ~~ Pilgrim Pines sits on a beautiful lake and the cottages are comfortable and handy to the dining and meeting rooms. The food was very good and the staff very personable and accommodating. The Site Coordinator, Chuck Anderson, was a delight, and his enthusiasm was infectious. I plan to return for more programs with Chuck and Greg.
