We loved this program. For us the highlights in NZ were Rotorua and the sheep shearing. Unfortunately the weather in November was not the greatest. Australia was terrific. We really enjoyed Sydney for the opera house & Taronga zoo. In Melbourne the penguins on parade and Skyview were great. We did not care that much for Ayers Rock (Uluru)--hot and not worth the effort. But we thoroughly enjoyed Cairns, especially snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef and Kuranda Center, where we held a koala. All in all a great trip. You may want to skip a lecture or two in order to do some souvenir shopping on your own.

The New Zealand and Australia Rhodes Scholar Tour exceeded all my expectations: unforgettable sightseeing, knowledgeable and compassionate site guides, and numerous attractions, adventures and fun. The Great Barrier Reef, the Glow Worm Cave, and the penguin parade were highlights.

I so enjoyed my trip to New Zealand & Australia. It definitely exceeded my expectations.

Theresa from Pembroke, MA Number of programs attended: 2

A well orchestrated and thoroughly delightful experience. Staff and experts that had deep knowledge and passion for their roles and areas of expertise made seeing and learning about Australia and New Zealand--the culture, the history, the natural wonders, the geology, the people, the successes and challenges-- a joy!

John from Pittsburgh, PA Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 02/05/15 - 03/07/15
This program was very comprehensive, informative and entertaining with a wide variety of experiences that we likely couldn't or wouldn't do ourselves ranging from attending an opera in Sydney to snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef. The instructors were all very friendly and knowledgeable which added to a great overall vacation.

Roads Scholars provides a group tour experience where you learn about, rather than simply see, what and where you visit.

Marilyn from Plainfield, IN Number of programs attended: 4

Absolutely worth a month of your time. So well planned and executed, terrific site and tour coordinators make it so relaxed and interesting. Not one wasted moment! Great diversity of learnings and experiences. Food and lodgings lovely throughout.

Andrew from Gainesville, FL Number of programs attended: 3

This program was fabulous. The personnel involved (program leader, instructors, "local experts") were the creme de la creme. The itinerary was extensive and diversified. There were no "extra cost" surprises and the value for money was exceptional. One of my best trips ever anywhere.

Katherine from Huntley, IL Number of programs attended: 8

We just returned from our New Zealand and Australia trip. It was wonderful! The experiences were varied and interesting. I really felt I got a good understanding of the land, the climates, the history, and the culture of both places. Strongly recommend this month long experience! Expensive, but worth it!

Odyssey Down Under was a trip of a lifetime! More than a tour, it was an educational experience that taught us more about the countries and their cultures. The 30 days passed quickly and I can't stop thinking about all that we saw and learned on our trip! A great value too.

Isabel from Ottawa, ON Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 11/09/14 - 12/06/14
This program offers a superb overview of both New Zealand and Australia - geology, geography, flora, fauna, history, culture, economy, politics - delivered by a fabulous team. Down Under will never seem remote again. Consider passing on the guided tour of Te Papa (Wellington) in favour of exploring it by yourself.

Sharon from Carmichael, CA Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 10/26/14 - 11/22/14
It was an amazing trip with wonderful people. New Zealand and Australia have exceptional scenery, and the instructors shared the history in an interesting way. My favorites were the Penguin Parade and Uluru. They were both exceptional experiences; penguins very close and a rainbow on Uluru. Wow, what a trip.

Fantastic trip! First class all the way. Saw and learned a great deal. Without exception, group leader and program instructors were top notch/experts in their fields. 28 days flew by - never felt ready to leave.

Shirley from Grafton, OH Number of programs attended: 6

This was a wonderful trip. All of the trips to museums, etc. met my expectations and then some. We had wonderful leaders and great lectures by well informed speakers. I would highly recommend this trip.

This was our eighth Road Scholar trip, and, as always, was exceptional in many ways: topicality of lectures, strentgh of focus on indigenous communities, compatibility of fellow travelers, and quality of accommodation and transportation. The two countries are quite different from each other, and both are fascinating. We stayed long enough in each place to grasp the key characteristics of each. We were warned of the weather extremes we might encounter. Dress in layers. And be prepared to be dazzled by both New Zealand and Australia.

Jerry from Saint Louis, MO Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 10/12/14 - 11/08/14
There were a disproportionate number of left-handed people in our group. In the general population, you can expect 7% lefties -- 2 or 3 in a group of 34. I observed at least twice that number, which is not shocking for an intellectually curious group. The handedness of the guest lecturers was similarly skewed leftwards. Being a first-timer, I don't know if the general demeanor of our group is typical. What a helpful, gentle-spirited, bright-minded bunch! No grumpies! No meanies! No complainers! Punctual and polite.

Sharon from Delaware, OH Number of programs attended: 6

Fantastic overview of New Zealand and Australia and their native cultures, but in November, be prepared for weather ranging from 7 to 33 degrees Centigrade and cold rain to blazing sun.

We went on the combined NZ/OZ trip. It was Great! We gained appreciation of the culture, economics, nature, animals of both countries, plus met some amazing people. I would highly recommend this trip!

Maureen from Reno, NV Number of programs attended: 12

Took combined NZ/OZ trip...it was a well rounded intro to both countries with a variety of city sights, museums, indigenous sites, nature walks, flora and fauna. It was well organized and all the site coordinators/guides/drivers were top notch. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about this part of the world .. worth every penny..

What an amazing trip!! If you’re wondering if you should go, the answer is YES! We will never forget our time in New Zealand and Australia. The weeks were packed with new friends, knowledgeable, patient leaders, and unforgettable places and experiences. Every place we went, or experience we had, was in the context of learning about the original people, plants, animals, culture, government, environment or history. We never worried about any detail, which meant we could relax and enjoy every aspect of the trip.

Little is heard of New Zealand and Australia in world news, so if you decide to see Australia do not forgo New Zealand both locations offer much in understanding that part of the world.

Ann from Charleston, SC Number of programs attended: 18

What an incredible trip with fabulous leader and site coordinators. We learned so much of both New Zealand and Australia- Te Papa Museum in Wellington, Milford Sound in the sunshine, gondolas up the mountain and over the rain forest, steamers across the lake, sheering the sheep, Sydney Opera House, Ayers Rock and Kata Tjuta jutting out of the red dessert, snorkeling along the Great Barrier Reef. Fabulous experience.

Robert from Shoreham, NY Number of programs attended: 1

New Zealand is the youngest land in terms of period of human habitation, and Australia is among the oldest geologically. Together they provide an awesome panorama of natural beauty, with every type of environment known to humans. Their flora and fauna are amazing, and the opportunity to enjoy summer there during January and February was extraordinary. The people were friendly and helpful, even though they drive and talk funny.

This is an adventure-packed program offering a wide variety of educational experiences on a broad platform of lecture, experiences, small group interactions, and personal discovery. One can be fully involved in learning about the people, culture, sociology, history, biology, geography, and geology of these vibrant countries. One receives a high value for your investment. The tour is very well organized and informative.

The "whisperers" were wonderful on walking field trips. Our guide could be leading the group and still be talking clearly to the last person to follow. What a great help that was to some of us, especially those with hearing issues. Everything about this trip was fabulous.

My husband and I recently returned from our first Road Scholar program. Like many of our fellow travelers, An Odyssey Down Under: Australia and New Zealand was a trip of a lifetime. Thanks to RS and Odyssey Travel, it was an amazing experience. The pace of the program and the mixture of activities and field trips were absolutely spot on. And our program leader, site coordinators and guest lecturers were top notch. It was evident that great pains had been taken to plan every detail to maximize our experience. Even a cancelled flight from Queenstown to Wellington did not adversely affect us. We lost one day in Wellington but gained an extra one in beautiful Queenstown. We didn't have to worry with trying to figure out what to do with the unexpected time in Queenstown. We were so impressed with how quickly RS and Odyssey put together a lovely day of travel along Lake Wakatipu to its end at Glenorchy and back before we had to depart on our rescheduled flight. My husband and I had an absolutely fabulous time in both countries. We highly recommend this program and look forward to other RS ventures in the future.

This was my fourth RS trip and all have been wonderful. I enjoyed every day of this grand adventure in New Zealand and Australia. Albert Sword(our guide for both countries) was great as were my fellow travelers. Seeing a shark (non-people eating kind) while I was snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef and feeding two grey kangaroos by hand will be memories that I will cherish. For those of you like me that can't see without glasses, you'll be glad to know that there were free optic snorkeling masks available to use while snorkeling. Dave picked out the perfect prescription mask for me on the first try. With all the flights and hotels, my advice is to travel light. I used only a four-wheeled carry-on suitcase and a small backpack for the month. The two countries are so different, but amazing in their own right so go and enjoy them both.

We had a wonderful time. It is a long trip with many flying segments. The trip has a steady, on-the-move tempo. If you enjoy meeting "new" people and want enough time to make friends and share experiences together you will really enjoy this trip. The tour leader and guides were first class people.

The 28 day adventure in NZ and Australia was a wonderful once-in-a-lifetime achievement. Anne and I found each day full of new learnings about these unique places. The South Island of New Zealand has beaustiful fields of vivid green grass and lambs everywhere, backing to majestic mountains and fiords. We learn much about the history of land, plants, animals and humanity by seeing such different lands. From the little penguins to the colorful birds and singing birds and coral reef fish, this was a rare treat. John Ericson was an excellent coordinator, supported by knowledgeable guides such as Albert Sword and Martin Ludgate

Everything about this trip is awesome! We finished, sad that it was over but SO glad that we and our great group have the memories of the two countries, the excellent accommodations, and the guides and local experts that gave us the best experience and knowledge we could ever ask for!

If you have ever considered going to New Zealand and or Australia you will never regret experiencing these countries with Roadscholar An Odyssey Down Under: Australia & New Zealand. My wife and I just returned from this trip, and had the dream of a lifetime fulfilled. The way the trip is balanced between informative lectures and well chosen field trips is hard to beat. We had a great time while learning so much. Good accomodations, above average food, good pace of travel, very good value, and excellent learning/travel experience.

Ann from Jacksonville, FL Number of programs attended: 1

The entire down under trip was simply awesome. We were away from home for 27 days to visit 2 countries..NewZealnad and Australia. All inclusive, we had no headaches and no glitches to worry about. Educational piece was so great that we felt like Road Scholars about those 2 countries---indeed after the return from Down Under.

For many of us this was certainly "the trip of a lifetime". Both countries are fascinating in their own rights, and this was a great introduction to them. Our program director was excellent; we could not have had a better one! Site coordinators were good, especially Martin in the Outback and Don in Melbourne. The group members were pleasant and respectful of each other. Don't put off going because of the long flights. They are indeed manageable with sleeping aids!

As the snow starts to fly in British Columbia, I am reflecting on my recent trip to New Zealand and Australia. This was a trip of a lifetime and provided an excellent overview of culture, geography, geology and life in these two countries. The organization, group leader and site coordinators were second to none. I highly recommend this travel adventure if you want to know what goes on "down under"!!
