What a delighted tour we North Americans had in the land of 'Pura vida' which means 'Great life', an expression the Costa Ricans use to describe living in their enchanted land. Our guides, Edwin and Alex were a most complementary duo, explaining the history and culture of their country. The bus driver, Alberto, made us feel perfectly safe in our travels. The cuisine was a homemnade style of the region, and we thoroughly enjoyed it! The accommodations were top notch. The informational lectures were quite stimulating, and the many stops for shopping as well as places of interest were balanced by enough leisure time. The outdoor activities left me with a feeling of well being, and they were adjusted to individuals as needed. One of the members in the group was so inspired that he set up a website with our photos and some professional ones which anyone considering this tour can access at QuetzalQuest.info

The true test of the success of a Road Scholar trip is how much more we know about the country and its environment and people than we did before our visit. I think I can safely say that is the case with our group of nine on the recent Taste of Costa Rica adventure. Thanks to the vast wealth of knowledge of our guide Edwin Ramirez, we not only learned the names of countless species of birds and reptiles and the importance of preserving the rainforest, but also a great deal about the importance of family to the economy of the country. We got to visit a family run coffee farm and hear about the many steps involved in coffee production before we get to taste it. We learned that only arabica is legal in Costa Rica because it is far superior to robusta. We also learned about organic farming and how to pick a good pineapple.
We also got a lesson in government and the current political situation in Costa Rica. How many Americans who did not participate in this trip can tell you that the pesident of Costa Rica is a woman named Lara Cinchilla? I don't know about the other members of my group, but I do know that I came away knowing a lot more about Costa Rica than I could have ever imagined. It was truly a scholarly experience and an adventue of a lifetime.

We've been back home only a week, and we are still thinking about our "Taste of Costa Rica" trip in May, 2011. From the moment we met our tour guide Edwin, we were smitten: friendly, knowledgeable, patient and so interesting to listen to! He knew more about the fauna and flora of Costa Rica than anyone! He planned our days' programming with weather considerations and the needs of the group. (Although it rained almost every day, we did not miss an excursion - somehow the sun came out when we needed it to.) He kept us moving; he answered hundreds of questions about sites we were seeing plus about things we didn't see. The small group of 9 were from all over the U.S. and we bonded quickly. A MUST first trip to Costa Rica for anyone interested in learning about a beautiful and fascinating country!!
