Nov 16-21, 2015 Extension:The Best of Cape Town 7 participants/I was the only single. Protea Hotel Breakwater Lodge-5-min walk across Dock Road to V&A Waterfront. (My room was lonely/spooky in the old prison with patchy WiFi while the couples were in the reception building with WiFi.) Andrew drove van toward Cape Point via the coastal road with stop south of Camps Bay with the Twelve Apostle Range on left, through Hout Bay and stop at Chapman’s Peak. At the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, we walked to the lighthouse at the top. Stop at Boulders Beach to view the African penguin colony. Stellenbosch, Franschhoek & Cape Winelands. Cable car up Table Mountain; Cape Town tour; drive up Signal Hill. Andrew Schofield, Awesome Group Leader, the biggest factor for my trip rating of 10/10. Andrew, who worked in the bush 41 years and lived the life of his beloved creatures, continuously shared the wonders of South Africa with us. Andrew’s enthusiasm was contagious. Andrew maintained “PuLi, PuLi, Zen” ambience at airports (2-hour flight delay due to a 100-year storm in Johannesburg) and border crossings; photographed the trip for us; exchanged $US for Rand; and confirmed our flights. Too much “free time” for a safety-seeking, 68-year old, non-birder, non-drinking, single, female. Fortunately, in Andrew’s “off duty time”-Andrew gave the group a 2-hour tour of Kirstenbosch. I purchased a DVD: “ Kirstenbosch -A Year in the Garden” that Andrew filmed. And Andrew gave me a walking tour of the V&A Waterfront.
Nov 16-21 was early summer in Cape Town: 77 high/60 low, at beginning of dry season: at end of the Spring Flowers. My South African Airways aisle seats did NOT allow a bag under the seat infront of me for the two 17-hour flights: Bummer! Nov 3-21, I spent $800 cash (no credit card charges) for food, tours, gifts, etc. Read prior to trip - Road Scholar materials, White Lion Back to the Wild by Andrew Schofield and Lonely Planet Southern Africa.

On October 23rd my wife & I participated in our first Road Scholar program. We were joined by 12 others in an African Safari, followed by The Best of Cape Town, an optional program extension. We can't say enough about this trip. The itinerary was superb, the Group Leaders terrific, and the accommodations beyond our expectations. I created a 53 minute YouTube video to highlight both of these programs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBbvDOv8cDY For those interested only in the African Safari program this 36 minute YouTube video represents the first 14 days of our 19 day adventure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQAV68yZH-E Finally, anyone interested in only The Best of Cape Town extension can view this 17 minute YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoyPnPb8X74

Cape Town and the surrounding area is beautiful - Table Mountain, Cape Peninsula, Cape Winelands to name a few. Part of the history of South Africa lives in Cape Town. Read about it before you go. This urban experience was an interesting juxtaposition to the game drives of the Wildlife Safari. I thoroughly recommend it!

This extension was the perfect counterpoint to my safari and visit to Victoria Falls--the whole experience has encouraged me to go back to Africa in the near future to witness the Great Migration in Tanzania. An amazing experience!

The Capetown extension was the perfect aftermath to the African Safari. The city and surrounding towns are beautiful and sad visions of the past and current environments. Our tour guide (Mervyn) was personable, professional and flexible in response to issues caused by weather and infrastructure problems. The only downer was the brevity of our stay. The number of days in Capetown need to be increased."

GO to Africa while you have the energy to truly enjoy all it has to offer. It was amazing and strenuous for some, but absolutely wonderful to see wild animals not in cages or zoo settings!

The Cape Town area is an interesting and beautiful place to visit. Discussion of the recent and current political and social situation was an important part of the trip. Our three nights was not enough time, additional nights will add much to the trip.

Africa is truly a world apart. Experiencing this part of the world, that most of us here in the US know little to nothing about, changed my view of the world. I'm grateful for the chance to experience a small portion of this huge continent, and get to know some of the people who live there.

Except for the trip to Robben Island, this is a delightful tour. If you don't like being crushed by other people, skip Robben Island. We enjoyed a picnic with a spectacular view on the way to see the penguins, a walk around the top of Table Mountain with an ever changing view and wine tasting. We made arrangements with Explore ahead of our trip to visit the Kirestenbosch Gardens the morning before we flew to Johannesburg. Explore also arranged for us to take a later flight to Johannesburg so we wouldn't have as long a layover in the Johannesburg airport.

Very worthwhile. It's a beautiful city and surroundings. Spectacular scenery. Another side of Africa that you must see.

Wonderful overview of Cape Town and the surrounding area. Recommend you do this extension if you do the wildlife safari, since it is such a long flight from the States. Beautiful area with mountains, water and scenic drives.
