Wonderful architecture, beautiful flowers, easy walking, great tours, good food.We enjoyed the musical presentations, the cooking lesson, and the historical presentation by General Ogletree in period costume. Our hotel was beautiful and ideally situated. I'll post some pictures below.

Our Savannah program was fantastic! Loved it all! Highlights were a morning with General Oglethorpe and two mornings being entertained by some VERY talented singers and musicians. We even attended a cooking school and had a fun time helping prepare some tasty low country cuisine. Our hotel, smack in the middle of the historic district, had some of the nicest staff you'd want to meet! Even the valet impressed us. There were nice breakfast buffets in the hotel daily and we lunched and dined in some excellent restaurants. We had visited Savannah a couple of times before. This time with Road Scholar we got to know it more intimately. What's not to love about this beautiful city!!

John from Escondido, CA Number of programs attended: 2

Thoroughly enlightening and charming. Don't miss this opportunity to fill in the blanks you don't know about Savannah.

George from Austin, TX Number of programs attended: 2

This is a superb survey program cutting across the most important parts of Georgia and Savannah's fascinating but understudied history; its glorious architecture, unique culture, wonderful cooking, and world class music. This program will take you into places and participate in activities that you will not be able to experience with independent travel.

Sandra from Nashville, TN Number of programs attended: 3

The Road Scholar Savannah Program was so much fun! It had a perfect blend of history, food, and music. The primary historian for the program was so knowledgeable. The chef presentation was interactive and delightful. The music presentation of native son Johnny Mercer was a treat!

I can see why this is a top-rated RS program by participants. It is what a RS program should be--lots of learning in a fun and interactive environment with outstanding, knowledgeable presenters. Paul Blatner is one of the best as he communicates his love and passion for Savannah and Georgia in his presentations. The location and amenities of the DeSota Hilton were perfect. The mix of history, architecture, music, Southern food at local restaurants, musical entertainment and even dancing were ideal. Other high points were cooking with Chef Darin. And I mean he does cook WITH you. Who knew green tomatoes in a cobbler would be delicious? The performance of the Kim Polente Trio was just amazing. Kim radiates charm, warmth, and a love of music and people. All were so talented and leave you with a new respect for the music of Johnny Mercer.

Philip from Granville, OH Number of programs attended: 3

My wife and I attended the Savannah program10/19 to 10/24 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Paul and Jacky were very knowledgeable tour guides and kept the program well organized. Being a native of Savannah and having an extensive background in history, Paul provided very interesting historical information about the area. This program provided us with the opportunity to learn about the history, culture, architecture, music and food of the area. The speakers and entertainers were all first rate. We especially enjoyed the visit to Chef Darin's Cooking School. The various restaurants where we dined out were all very good. We loved our time in Savannah and highly recommend this program.

If you have thought of visiting Savannah, this program is for you. It gives a sampling of everything[ history, food, music, lore and architecture. The hotel is right in the middle of the historic district giving easy access to anywhere in the district. The presenters were super and Paul and Jacky were competent, friendly leaders. Be sure to read "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" before your visit.

Charline from Yorba Linda, CA Number of programs attended: 2

It was great; just like Christine said, a great variety of experiences. I would especially like to commend our guides, Paul and Jackie. Paul was such an expert on Savannah; As he said, he has lived in Savannah all of his life. The historic section of the city is beautiful with wonderful vegetation and historic architecture. I strongly recommend this tour.

Christine from Oxnard, CA Number of programs attended: 2

Take this program! Savannah is a unique American city. The historic district is compact, yet with wide sidewalks, tree filled squares, interesting architecture and local shops and eateries. If you like the freedom of walking and the beauty of a historical small city, this program is for you.

Jo Anne from La Grange, TX Number of programs attended: 10

If you have not traveled in the SE states, start here in Savannah. The history of this state is much more than what you learned in history classes. The state and local efforts to preserve the historic homes is wonderful. A trip you won't soon forget.

Barbara from Los Alamitos, CA Number of programs attended: 9

This is an outstanding tour, way beyond our expectations. It was interesting, entertaining, and fun, all at a relaxed Southern pace. We learned about Savannah, its present, its history, its music and its food. The cooking school day was great fun.

If you enjoy learning about history of one of our outstanding city in the United States, take the Road Scholar trip to Savannah, GA. The city is beautiful with delightful Squares with live Oak trees, outstaning architecture, good food and many other things to discover.

My husband and I just finished the program in Savannah, Georgia, and loved every minute of it. The program covers the history, culture, food and music of the city and the area. Presenters were well-chosen and did a fantastic job. I especially loved the cooking lesson at Chef Darin's cooking school and the music presenters, both singers and musicians, were excellent. We were glad that we had chosen to stay at the downtown location (DeSoto Hilton) as everything was within walking distance, and free public transportation was just a half block away. What a beautiful city and what a great program!

Judith from Montgomery, TX Number of programs attended: 2

Beautiful city, brimming with history and stories of the past. This trip was a true southern experience and opened my eyes to much of our nations's history- and the characters that developed it. This was a great program! I can't wait for my next Road Scholar trip!

Susan from Sun City Center, FL Number of programs attended: 1

I was so impressed by my first Road Scholar trip - to Savannah. The leaders, Paul and Jacky, were so efficient that the programmes went ver smoothly from one to the other. The stately homes of Savannah were fascinating and the really lively talk by General Oglethorpe was outstanding. The other great event waste hands on cooking with Chef Darin. A good group of friendly people made this lone English person feel very welcome.

Karen from Brooklyn, NY Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 02/16/14 - 02/21/14
This was my first Road Scholars trip but certainly, with the help of God, not my last. The learning experience provided by Paul was top notch. The tours were so informative and interesting. Meeting all the different people from all walks of life was awesome as well. And the food...well that was just wonderful especially the cooking class with Chef Darin. I would definitely recommend this tour but only if you are taking it with Road Scholars!

Lucy from Essex, CT Number of programs attended: 7
Date attended: 02/16/14 - 02/21/14
This was a terrific program - Paul and Jacky were SO helpful and knowledgeable, the hotel was centrally located and had great b'fast buffet - the programs were fun, with lots of music and history - some restaurant meals for lunch and/or dinner in good, local restaurants and enough free time to relax, see the sights and totally enjoy Savannah - I'd like to add that I am Gluten-free (not by choice) and every meal I ate was GF & great - I have done other programs & this was the best ever -

Sally from Sun City Center, FL Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 02/16/14 - 02/21/14
All I can say was the experience was incredible. Met new friends, learned a new perspective on savannah and enjoyed every aspect. Made new friends, laughed a lot!

Joan E. from Wauconda, IL Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 10/20/13 - 10/25/13
This was my first Road Scholar Trip. I was very impressed with the variety of programs that Paul provided for us: a morning history lecture, historical impersonator, sessions on architecture and art, two on music, a cooking class that was very exciting, walking tours of the city and historical houses and fabulous food (which we walked off on the tours). The visit with Mr. Duncan, a prominent bookseller, and his wife, in their old restored home, was very enjoyable. I'm looking forward to Provence next fall.

Norman from Brookfield, WI Number of programs attended: 4

Lee and Bill would rank the Savannah program near the top. Intro to low country food was nice, including Mrs. Wilkes Dining Rm. and of course the cooking school. New appreciation for this fine city.

Alice from Hendersonville, NC Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 10/20/13 - 10/25/13
This is a wonderful program for those interested in Savannah's heritage, its food, music and history. I learned so much, even though I had visited Savannah a number of times previously. October is a wonderful time to travel, weather-wise, and the accommodations at the Desoto Hilton cannot be matched. It was a wonderful experience!

Sheila from Hudson, NH Number of programs attended: 1

David from Penfield, NY Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 10/06/13 - 10/11/13
Dave and Carol Boyer from Rochester, NY We really enjoyed the diversity of the program from tours of historic homes, to cooking school, to music and enjoying that great southern cooking especially Mrs Wilkes low country lunch. Our coordinator, Paul, was super helpful, knowledgeable and a walking history lesson. The weather was great and the people we meet on this program were exceptional. The only disappointment we had was with the Hilton hotel. We had a room with adjoining doors which were NOT sound proofed and had 2 nights of little sleep until our room was finally changed. changed

Janet from Louisville, KY Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 10/06/13 - 10/11/13
After reading some of the reviews of the Savannah program, I want to emphasize the morning with Mercer's songs as a highlight of the week for my husband and me. Kim Michael Polote is an extraordinary vocalist. David Duckworth's keyboard accompaniment and solos also displayed virtuosity.

Susan from Corvallis, OR Number of programs attended: 12
Date attended: 10/13/13 - 10/18/13
This thoroughly organized program has a combination of history, music and culinary art that would be hard to beat at any price. Paul and Jackie saw that we were prepared for this active program. My fellow travelers were welcoming and my flight across the country as a single participant was worth every minute.

Nancy from Wilton, CA Number of programs attended: 3

The website is quite easy to use. And I know I will be checking it for future adventures with RoadScholar.
