What a wonderful way to tour the Far East on the small but nicely outfitted mv Voyager. A real treat to only unpack once for nearly 3 months. The program starts off intensely right away, so you might consider going a day or 2 earlier to recover from the long flight. This is a nice intro immersion experience, the flavor and feeling of these distinct cultures. Places, people, leaders, guides, and RS participants made this an adventure that will be remembered fondly for years. Check the group size before booking to avoid any disappointment.

At its best, Eastern Odyssey was educational, inspiring, uplifiting, illuminating and enchanting. These long cruise programs are great for experiencing parts of the world with which you are not familiar, at a pace that is sustainable over several months. However, and this is important, I would not recommend a trip of this sort without assurances from Road Scholar that the total group size during any segment will not exceed practical limits, which in my estimation is 24 to 36.

Any three month trip is going to have challenges, and Richard captured the challenge of too many people which is a Road Scholar issue for sure. However, a trip is more than one thing and this trip was magical in so many other ways. We saw wonderful places and things -- orangutans in Borneo, the lunch box crew in Mumbai, elephants in Thailand, the Taj Mahal and so on. The group itself made the trip worthwhile -- full of intelligent and insightful people with interesting observations and opinions and most of all, a desire to learn. It was always intellectually challenging and personally rewarding. So there were too many people? So what? Who would I have wanted not to be there? We also loved the small size and great service available on the ship, the bonus of the ship's lecturers as well as the RS lecturers, the dance classes, entertainment and entertainers, and all the rest. This was the trip of our lifetime as we had hoped it would be.

This was the worst Road Scholar program I have ever take for numerous reasons but the primary problem was that there were from 50 to 70 people in our group at various times. With such an unwieldy horde we were assigned numbers (just like the army or prison)to report our presence and we were relegated to huge restaurants and tourist sites that could accommodate so many people; more or less guaranteeing that all we would encounter were other massive tour groups. If you like being warehoused and seeing other tourists then this is the trip for you. As for me, I cut my trip short sacrificing thousands of dollars in non-refundable payments to return home early and recover from this very unpleasant experience.
