A totally grand experience from start to finish! Entertaining, educational, perfect weather, a great location, interesting participants and exceptional staff combined to make this a near perfect vacation!

Linda from Tucson, AZ Number of programs attended: 8

Best place ever, it was stepping back in time. Very restful. Great program!

Arlene from Virginia Beach, VA Number of programs attended: 4

The Mackinac Island experience provided an in-depth study of a magical place. The exquisitely talented presenters were passionate about their field and engaging (as well as entertaining). The breadth and depth of activities ensured that we are all now mini-experts on history, summer cottage architecture, flora, fauna, and fudge of Mackinac. What could be better than "high tea" at the Grand Hotel after a hike in the woods?

What a memorable five days in a beautiful, almost unbelievable, location. We really enjoyed our first Road Scholar experience and already have the "Big" book out planning our next. Our leaders, Bill and Sue, kept us on schedule and provided so many experiences unique to Mackinac Island. We especially enjoyed our time with the bird expert and the local perspective provided by our final evening speaker. Loved the group, their flexibility and friendliness, and hope to meet again on another memorable adventure.

I thoroughly enjoyed my entire experience: the people, the island, the leaders, the speakers.... It was all great fun.

Karen from Saint Louis, MO Number of programs attended: 1

This was my first trip with Road Scholar. What did I like about this experience? Everything - lectures tours, speakers, accommodations, food, and more. Very little effort on my part to have a first class experience.

Virgle from Bonaire, GA Number of programs attended: 1

This was our first Road Scholar program and it exceeded our expectations. Mackinac Island was beautiful but the best part was the speakers who made the island come alive. The accommodations were perfect and we loved meeting a wonderful group of people from all over the country. We look forward to many more programs in the future.

James from Rockford, IL Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 09/07/14 - 09/12/14
This program was fantastic. We enjoyed all of the speakers, especially the bird man and the horse woman. Our leaders, Bill and Sue did a wonderful job of keeping us on track and on time. We have been going to Mackinac Island for over 25 years and we were VERY pleasantly surprised by the depth of information we received. We are so glad that we were able to be part of this program and the many wonderful other participants.

Macinac Island is a unique state park. It combines old world charm and history, lush botanical beauty, fantastic water views, interesting architecture and crass commercialism. Not to be missed.

Catherine from Peoria, AZ Number of programs attended: 11

This was a delightful program which exceeded my expectations.

Jean from Glendale, AZ Number of programs attended: 2

This trip to Mackinac Island was the best. The hotel accommodations were very nice. The speakers exceptional! It was a great bunch of people! BTW, I have downloaded the books recommended to me and I even found Guernsey Literary..! Thank you all for making this a trip to remember.

Therese from Chicago, IL Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 08/24/14 - 08/29/14
This was even better than expected. Gorgeous surroundings with flowers and cottages. Everywhere I went had something special to offer. Peace and quiet, no noise pollution. Speakers were outstanding.

Toni from San Antonio, TX Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 08/24/14 - 08/29/14
What a marvelous five days! I felt sorry for other (day) visitors to Mackinac Island that thought taking a short carriage ride and tasting fudge was all there is. Our total immersion into the history, culture, food and personalities of the island was told by exceptional local experts. The hotel was in a good location...the room comfortable and staff was very friendly. In August the flowers were spectacular. What a great way to spend five relaxing days.

Josetta from Chicago, IL Number of programs attended: 1

Don't miss the Mackinaw Island program. There is a wealth of history and information awaiting you about this wonder of Michigan! It's beauty is pristine and amazing!

Vera from Logan, OH Number of programs attended: 22

I would highly recommend this program without reservation.. Beautiful relaxing venue, good leader and excellent presenters. An opportunity to learn about the real life on Mackinac Island.

Beverley from Tucson, AZ Number of programs attended: 2

This was learning in a very pleasant setting. The Island is a reminder of our history as a country as well as a slice of the natural world.

Bill from La Canada, CA Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 08/10/14 - 08/15/14
I was delighted with this program and the chance to immerse myself in the history and culture of Mackinac Island. The leadership was outstanding, the speakers were great, and the group was very enjoyable. I would do it all over again in a minute.

Ronald from Sherman Oaks, CA Number of programs attended: 1

The program FAR exceeded my expectations........it was a wonderful experience.

Susan from Concord, NC Number of programs attended: 12
Date attended: 06/01/14 - 06/06/14
Overall I thought it was a good experience, and our leaders did everything in their power to make it a success. The lodging, while adequate, was a bit drab and depressing. The blanket on my bed was in tatters, so the maid replaced it. The food was especially disappointing, so we ate out quite a bit. The dining area was congested and poorly laid out. It is obvious that this facility is not equipped to handle catering. The staff, however, was pleasant. The lectures were informative but too long. Five-ten minutes could easily be shaved off each presentation. I especially liked the walk-abouts and rides (fresh air). As always, it is interesting to meet people from across the US through Road Scholar.

Kathy from Homer, AK Number of programs attended: 1

I thoroughly enjoyed my time on Mackinac Island. There was a great group of people involved and everyone seemed to have a good time. Tea at the Grand Hotel was wonderful and the Harbour View Inn was the best! The only downside was that the lilacs hadn't bloomed due to the severe winter they'd had. This just means that I'll have to go back!

Jane from Colville, WA Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 06/01/14 - 06/06/14
The program was awesome, fantastic--exceeded all my expectations. Going to Mackinac Island was a dream of mine for almost 50 years. The leaders, the programs, speakers, meals, sights, hotel were wonderful. And I learned so much about the island, it's history, the culture of the people past and present--can't say enough good things about this program!!

Suzanne from Mount Laurel, NJ Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 06/01/14 - 06/06/14
It was a wonderful surprise to be at Mackinac Island. The group leaders were fantastic. The group itself was a friendly group from all professional backgrounds, states and ages. Although I met my sister there, I would not hesitate to take a trip without her. But that will have to be a while. We are studying the programs for next year.

Gretchen from Danville, IN Number of programs attended: 1

I went in with high hopes and a positive mindset but came out disappointed. The quality of presentations was uneven, ranging from fascinating to very weak. Accommodations were great but the food was monotonous. The program is listed as active but was sedentary, and the presentation room was overcrowded and uncomfortable. Everyone connected with the program was pleasant.

Christine from Marietta, GA Number of programs attended: 13

This was my 14th Program, it was great, learned a lot about the island..food was healthy and plenty of it..and FRESH fruit if you didn't want sweet desserts. ..It was my son's first Road Scholar program and he is looking forward to doing many more..You can't please everyone, especially if people have negative attitudes to begin with. Our leaders and speakers did a great job in such a short time..

Kristine from Vincennes, IN Number of programs attended: 1

The scenery is beautiful. The rooms were nice. The food was not the best. The lecturers overlapped. One lecture was primarily family photos and comments about how her great grandfather made all of his money. I did not care how many houses he built on the island or what the cook looked like. The program became too boring after 3 days. Five days is way too long unless the program is expanded. The lecture and dining rooms were too small for our group. This is my first Road Scholar trip and will probably be my last.

Antonia from San Diego, CA Number of programs attended: 2

Great opportunity to experience Mackinac Island and learn about the Great Lakes region in general. The first program of the year was good in that the Island wasn't crowded - a little chilly due to the long, cold winter but nothing too uncomfortable.

Debbie from Milwaukie, OR Number of programs attended: 49

This experience was wonderful. The scenery and the beautiful homes were very interesting. The accommodations were in an ideal location. We went on many walks which were guided by experts in their field.the flowers were not out but it is a reason to return later in the year. I always have wanted to see this island and would highly recommend this experience.

Most people who go to Mackinaw Island just see a few highlights and then they leave. There is so much more to the island, and Road Scholar is the way to understand the island and the people who love there.

Thomas from Savoy, IL Number of programs attended: 6
Date attended: 09/15/13 - 09/20/13
Charming and delightful. We had no idea how much there was to learn about Mackinac Island. And clearly did not appreciate how much fun it would be to seriously learn about this place. Speakers were really good-very engaging. We had been there before, but that one day visit was totally insufficient. Highly recommend. Tom & Bev Frey, Savoy, IL

Anne Lee from Delray Beach, FL Number of programs attended: 3

Loved the quaint area with horses and two and three wheelers for transportation. The weather was warm and beautiful to enjoy all the walking tours following the lectures.Harbor Inn was very comfortable and co-operative. The meals were served nicely by friendly and observent staff. My daughter and I did not want to leave. Would love to go again just for walking around and have tea.

Mackinac Island, the jewel of Michigan is a terrific program.
I learned about the history, birding, flora and fauna, local foods, and architecture on the island.
I enjoyed meeting other participants from all over the USA.
I learned why it is called the turtle, and enjoyed the island's 'highland'.

Sue from Stevens Point, WI Number of programs attended: 1

If you have the opportunity to attend the Road Scholar Mackinac island trip, I would highly recommend it. The speakers were entertaining and informative. We were never forced to eat fudge (even though the smell of it was irresistible)

The Mackinac Island experience satisfied a five-year desire of mine to enperience this location and culture plus explore upper Michigan before and after the program. Highly recommended!

Davida from Wharton, NJ Number of programs attended: 2

For others considering the Mackinac Island program I would suggest: Yes, sign up now. If you can do it during the lilac festival all the better (though the locals say that often the blooming of the lilacs is either earlier or later than the festival). This was a wonderful program in a beautiful part of the country. - Davida

Who would have thought a small island could be so interesting and beautiful. dm

Meredith from Southington, CT Number of programs attended: 31

Ours was a wonderful experience with generally a fun loving group out to enjoy the beauty of Mackinac Island, the beautiful lilacs in full bloom and the knowledgeable group leaders. Signing up for the week of the lilac festival added to the many bonuses. We all came back to the mainland official fudgies. You'll have to go yourself to know what I mean!

David from Savannah, GA Number of programs attended: 1

We thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the trip. Our leader was wonderful and all the programs were very informative. It was our first Road Scholar trip and we definitely look forward to doing more. David and Mona Fuchs

Beatrice from Glenelg, MD Number of programs attended: 12

Mackinac Island is a magical place to visit! If you like lilacs, try to go during the lilac festival. My favorite parts of the program were the tea at the Grand Hotel; learning about and seeing/smelling all the lilacs, and listening to the horses clip clopping as they pull the carriages.

Lucinda from Bellevue, WA Number of programs attended: 1

This is not about the website but I receive far, far too many ads and mailings from Road Scholar. I've now stopped the email ads and think I've stopped the paper ads. Twice a year is enough since most of us can look trips up online.

Carol from Lancaster, NY Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 05/19/13 - 05/24/13
This was our first experience but it certainly will not be our last. Great program with diverse learning experiences that included a wonderful tea, walk in the woods. Not even fog and rain could diminish the enjoyment we found in the time we were there.

Carolyn from Erie, PA Number of programs attended: 18
Date attended: 05/19/13 - 05/24/13
The Mackinac Island program was wonderful. Be prepared, however, for possible very cold weather in May and in the fall.
