Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

A really good program in its diversity and the organization and leadership.

Excellent program. We had spent little time in West Virginia and this program was an excellent overview of all the area has to offer. An efficient program manager and a nice variety of experiences. One of the reasons we selected this program was the reviews posted by other people. I agree that this was an excellent choice.

The Greenbriar Valley Adventure was one of the best and most comprehensive of the 33 programs I have attended. Every aspect of the program imparted information about West Virginia in a fun and meaningful manner in and around Lewisburg, WV, which was voted in 2011 the "Coolest small town in the USA". An honor they deserve. The coordinator, the bus driver and all of the presenters were top-notch. The accomodations were more than adequate and the food was outstanding. It couldn't have been better.

Who would have known how many fascinating and varied West Virginia experiences could be crammed into a week! We visited the very high tech National Radio Astronomical Observatory in the "quiet zone" of the West Virginia mountains and rode a tram into an exhibition coal mine, led by a miner who had spent over 30 years in the mining. We saw a wonderful play ("Rings of Fire" featuring Johnnny Cash's music) and had presentations by West Virgnia historians and authorities in mining and local agriculture. We entered the cold war bunker at the luxury Greenbrier resort, climbed aboard a logging train which took us to the top of a mountain, viewed the New River Gorge, came upon the oldest church west of the Allegheney Mountain and heard the current minister/caretaker tell of its history. The meals varied from catering by the local Farmers Market Association, in which only local food was presented, to a scrumptious dinner at a Lewisburg restaurant. (The box lunches set a new standard for take-along lunches!) Such a fun time!

Although, it is easier for me to fly directly to Hong Kong or Singapore, than to these "out of the way" places, this is indeed a great program for first timers and/or return visitors. I've been closed out of this program 2 times! I understand why they call it the "coolest" little town! People are friendly and know you, especially if you stand out from the crowd! I'm talking about everyone from those working at the Lewisburg Airport, it's Visitor Center, Public Library and at our hotel. We covered a lot of areas from general history, coal mining, farming, the arts and everything else. Our driver is great as are almost all drivers on Road Scholar programs! Almost all participants had their cars. We had to change coaches when one participant who required a wheelchair, decided to travel on the coach instead of in their own car. This handicap coach didn't have a PA system which made listening difficult. Some stopped listening and began talking amongst themselves instead which exacerbated the situation to those who still want to hear. Local coordinator, Gloria Kincaid, was superb on accommodating those needing extra attention and/or assistance. Job well done. Thank you for a successful program!
