Friday Harbor is lovely. The whole island is green and filled with interesting trees and birds.

The two-island trek on the San Juan Islands was an excellent first-time Road Scholar experience for me as it combined interesting educational programs and incredible scenery in hiking. I learned so much about this area and also about the importance of life long learning. I am looking forward to another trip!

As a fair weather hiker, I knew I was pushing my luck by signing up for the first program of the season. And sure enough, I thought perhaps I had made a big mistake when on our first day out, we were met with gale force winds and a passing squall as we hiked in the American Camp on the main San Juan Island with bald eagles being literally wind-tossed over our heads. But April showers bring May flowers, and by the end of our 5-day sojourn, we were relishing our luck at having such lovely sunny weather in which to hike around Mountain Lake in the Moran State Park on Orcas Island with wild flowers carpeting our way. In fact, by Friday when we left, the temperatures were in the low 80s, and a private school across Bellingham Bay from the islands declared it "Sun Day" and cancelled school for its students "due to great weather." Personally, I was pleased to have been in the islands during their "slow season," well in advance of the tourist onslaught that arrives as the weather improves. And it was a blessing to have the cooler weather for our exertions on the hiking trails. For even though we were not doing any technical climbs, we did have to do some work to get to the top of 650-ft. Mt. Young. On Orcas, our leader made the command decision to drive to the summit of Mt. Constitution and then walk down to its Little Summit at the 2200 ft. level. All in all, the program included just the right amount of walking in stunningly beautiful surroundings. And the one brief period of inclement weather was a small price to pay for the untrammeled serenity in which we were able to tour the islands.
