Road Scholar
Program #13160RJ
7 Days | 6 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Karen from Mountain View, CA Number of programs attended: 4

This was a trip that engaged the heart and the mind, to understand the lives of the Native Americans, the explorers, and the homesteaders. It enhanced my appreciation of our National Parks and those who are dedicated to maintaining and explaining them to us.

Pam from Pleasanton, CA Number of programs attended: 1

Mt Rushmore fulfilled a life long dream - definitely worth seeing. But the rest of the tour was fascinating as well. Did not know South Dakota had so much history, unique lands and culture. The speakers and group leader were excellent. Loved it all.

Walter from Springfield, MO Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 09/29/13 - 10/05/13
Mount Rushmore was the first Road Scholar trip for me and my wife. Although an early winter blizzard cut our trip to the Black Hills of S.D. short by two days we got more than our monies worth before we were forced to bail out.

Susan from Chatsworth, CA Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 08/18/13 - 08/24/13
I had a wonderful experience on the Mount Rushmore and Black Hills adventure. We were lucky to have Jerry as our leader. Our group included people from all around the country and we all got along great. I saw new places like Custer State Park and enjoyed seeing Deadwood. My return to Mount Rushmore was fabulous and the evening program was inspiring.

Judith from Thibodaux, LA Number of programs attended: 7
Date attended: 09/01/13 - 09/07/13
My husband and I enjoyed this program very much. The K-Bar-S Lodge is lovely and in a beautiful setting. Besides visiting Mt. Rushmore, we learned a lot about the geology of the area and Lakota Indian culture and visited many beautiful natural landscapes.

Evelyn from Menlo Park, CA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 09/01/13 - 09/07/13
RoadScholar is the only way to travel if you really want to see and know about the destination you are going to visit. Well planned with educated tour guides who know their stuff!

Margaret from Arab, AL Number of programs attended: 3

Mount Rushmore, Black Hill and Badlands a terrific tour. I was awed and inspired as well as entertained. Super tour guide and coach driver made the week just fly by. Saw and experienced more than I expected. A not to be missed tour.

Jason from Boynton Beach, FL Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 08/18/13 - 08/24/13
This is the way to see Mount Rushmore, the Black Hills and Badlands. This trip highlights a diversity of experiences in the area, and far exceeds anything you could do on you own.

Natalie from Jackson, MS Number of programs attended: 7
Date attended: 08/18/13 - 08/24/13
I loved seeing Mt. Rushmore (especially the lighting ceremony) and the Badlands and found that, as always with Road Scholar, the speakers and the variety of activities were excellent. The K Bar S Lodge was beautiful, comfortable, friendly, and the food was excellent.

Sharon from Hilton Head, SC Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 05/05/13 - 05/11/13
What's not to like? Great people, wonderful accommodations, knowledgeable speakers, and the grandeur of the Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore, and the many other places we visited. Perfection!

Anna from Gastonia, NC Number of programs attended: 17
Date attended: 07/28/13 - 08/03/13
This was a great program, the hotel was wonderful, large room, had a balcony and could see George Washington while drinking my morning coffee. I went on this trip to see Mt Rushmore, but was awestruck by the Badlands. There were plenty of photo ops, and the half mile hike on Mt Rushmore provided many.Definitely one of the top programs of Road Scholar.

Carol from Saint Paul, MN Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 07/28/13 - 08/03/13
I really enjoyed the trip. The hotel is wonderful and the activities are well planned and education in a beautiful setting.

Carol from Sarasota, FL Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 07/28/13 - 08/03/13
This was a very good program. The combination of natural beauty, manmade wonders and great learning opportunities suited our group of about 34 participants very well. K Bar S Lodge was lovely and our leader Bob was very knowledgeable about SD.

Richard from Fresno, CA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 07/14/13 - 07/20/13
This was a great learning experience. Jerry, our Road Scholar guide did a great job. The speakers were all good and informative. The K bar S Lodge was a convenient and good place to stay. Their food was like home cooking. The agenda was good, except for the last day with a train ride to Hill City, not much to really do in Hill City and the train schedule made time to eat somewhat restrictive. The only real problem was that the bus we were assigned was 30 years old and very slow to go up hills.

James from Arlington, VA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 06/23/13 - 06/29/13
Good for those who want to see the tourism attractions with a guide and bus driver who know them.

Cynthia from Girard, OH Number of programs attended: 9
Date attended: 06/23/13 - 06/29/13
Excellent location. Wonderful lodgings - could view Mt. Rushmore from the lodge. Memorable trip to the Badlands.

Beth from Altamonte Springs, FL Number of programs attended: 15
Date attended: 06/23/13 - 06/29/13
This program proved to be a celebration of Western and Native American heritage thru exhibits and hands on experiences. The Crazy Horse Memorial offers a tribute to the Lakota Indians and offered us the opportunity to view the sculptor's studio and home. Learning about the science lab located at the Homestake Mine was an interesting and thought provoking stop in our journey. The drive thru the Badlands, with it's jagged spires, provided amazing scenery. And, of course, our group leader, Karen, made the trip even more memorable with her knowledge of the area.

Mary from Castro Valley, CA Number of programs attended: 15
Date attended: 06/02/13 - 06/08/13
Your website is very complete and a welcome site to evaluate my selection of new program

Susan from Orleans, VT Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 05/05/13 - 05/11/13
I had the most amazing time on this program. I learned so much...For instance I did not know that the rocks were formed by the plates in collison, and that the members of the" Little House" books by Wilder took place out here, that so much GOLD was hidden in these hills, and that the Badlands was an inland sea. The more I travel in this country, the more beautiful it is.Thank you Road Scholar for a great trip! See you again out on the trail.....

Virginia from Little Rock, AR Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 05/12/13 - 05/18/13
This was my first Road Scholars program and it exceeded all of my expections. Our group leader made the program personal; and she and the other presenters made the history of the region come alive. I am looking forward to going on other programs.

Susan from Lansing, KS Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 05/12/13 - 05/18/13
This was our first Road Scholar adventure and it far exceeded our expectations. The area attractions and educational presentations; Penny, our group leader, and Dan, our coach driver; the accommodations and food; and our fellow participants made this a trip to remember. I highly recommend it to others. This may have been our first adventure, but it will not be our last!

Willa from West Hartford, CT Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 05/12/13 - 05/18/13
Director Penny Island is spectacular making the trip truly informative and not forgetting the fun. Great, great trip that gives a sense of the American history tied up in this place. Could never have gotten a microfraction of the info on my own. Accommodations are very good and the food service at the hotel tried to bend to help people with dietary needs. Lectures were terrific. Perhaps a little heavily packed for 6 days. 5/5 stars. Elliott Rosenworcel

Barbara from Folsom, CA Number of programs attended: 7

The week at the K Bar S could not have been better. The group was very friendly, the guide Karen helpful and knowledgeable, weather perfect, food very good, and the daily programs educational and amazing at different points. I would recommend this program for anyone who wants to see all the Black Hills has to offer.

Diana from Allyn, WA Number of programs attended: 1

My first Road Scholar program which will be difficult to outshine. Tour guide was friendly yet professional, possessed strong communication skills and was exceptionally knowledgeable. The accommodations were a respite after full days; clean, well-appointed with conference rooms and dining on-site. As I mentioned at the beginning, this experience will be difficult to match, much less surpass.

Jane from Soquel, CA Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 09/16/12 - 09/22/12
The accommodations were excellent. The field trips were interesting, varied and lead by a very warm, enthusiastic, and organized tour guide. The people in our group were friendly, considerate, and caring. A great experience!

Sabrina from Greer, SC Number of programs attended: 5

Pat from San Jose, CA Number of programs attended: 7
Date attended: 09/16/12 - 09/22/12
This program should be on anyone's list who enjoys beautiful scenery, historic and iconic sites, wildlife, and U.S. history. The leader was delightful as well as well-organized. Accommodations were first-rate in a beautiful location that we hated to leave. There are very few lodges where you can see George Washington every morning and illuminated every evening!

Gaylene from Athens, GA Number of programs attended: 13
Date attended: 09/16/12 - 09/22/12
This was a wonderful program. My husband and I have been on numerous others and we found the leader, Penny, to be fun and very organized! The program was well balanced on content of the American Indians and early settlers. The accommodations were superb as far as cleanliness, staff, location and meals were concerned. The fact that the other participants were friendly, non-complainers and on time, made for a thoroughly enjoyable time!

Vincent from Macungie, PA Number of programs attended: 1

Patrick from Chula Vista, CA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 09/02/12 - 09/08/12
This was our first Road Scholar program and it was great. Bob Dravek, our leader, was outstanding in all respects. He was knowledgeable, caring and competent. Our accomodations at the KBarS Lodge were also outstanding. The pastoral venue was truly representative of the area and we enjoyed watching the deer herd graze while waiting for dinner. The staff were friendly and made sure that they took care of all of out needs. The food service was outstanding. There was no way that we could have seen as much if we were traveling on our own. The only downside was the pace of the trip. Most of the attendees were seniors and we could have used a little downtime. We will definitely take more Road Scholar trips.

Rosemarie from Oceanside, CA Number of programs attended: 8
Date attended: 09/02/12 - 09/08/12
Best and most informative and enjoyable program. Marked high 5.

Merle from Santa Barbara, CA Number of programs attended: 14
Date attended: 06/03/12 - 06/09/12
No screw ups. Lots of time doing things and nice lectures by erudite instructors. No crisis of any kind. Clean and clear air. Polite people everywhere. Unexpected pleasures in talking to Native americans, the paleontology museum in Hill City, the Comstock mine, lack of obnoxious tourists in general.

Ethel from Cottonwood, CA Number of programs attended: 21
Date attended: 05/06/12 - 05/12/12
This was a truly delightful experience- every day was interesting and educational.
