Close [ x ]
Easy
For people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
Moderate
These programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
Active
For people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately Challenging
For hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
Challenging
Get ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

This was our first Road Scholar adventure and it far exceeded our expectations. The area attractions and educational presentations; Penny, our group leader, and Dan, our coach driver; the accommodations and food; and our fellow participants made this a trip to remember. I highly recommend it to others. This may have been our first adventure, but it will not be our last!

Director Penny Island is spectacular making the trip truly informative and not forgetting the fun. Great, great trip that gives a sense of the American history tied up in this place. Could never have gotten a microfraction of the info on my own. Accommodations are very good and the food service at the hotel tried to bend to help people with dietary needs. Lectures were terrific. Perhaps a little heavily packed for 6 days. 5/5 stars. Elliott Rosenworcel

This is a very well planned program. The knowledge of the instructors and the passion they have make this an exceptional program. The K Bar S Lodge is in a very beautiful setting with a very friendly and helpful staff. It rates a ten.

The week at the K Bar S could not have been better. The group was very friendly, the guide Karen helpful and knowledgeable, weather perfect, food very good, and the daily programs educational and amazing at different points. I would recommend this program for anyone who wants to see all the Black Hills has to offer.

My first Road Scholar program which will be difficult to outshine. Tour guide was friendly yet professional, possessed strong communication skills and was exceptionally knowledgeable. The accommodations were a respite after full days; clean, well-appointed with conference rooms and dining on-site. As I mentioned at the beginning, this experience will be difficult to match, much less surpass.

This program should be on anyone's list who enjoys beautiful scenery, historic and iconic sites, wildlife, and U.S. history. The leader was delightful as well as well-organized. Accommodations were first-rate in a beautiful location that we hated to leave. There are very few lodges where you can see George Washington every morning and illuminated every evening!

This was a wonderful program. My husband and I have been on numerous others and we found the leader, Penny, to be fun and very organized! The program was well balanced on content of the American Indians and early settlers. The accommodations were superb as far as cleanliness, staff, location and meals were concerned. The fact that the other participants were friendly, non-complainers and on time, made for a thoroughly enjoyable time!

This was our first Road Scholar program and it was great. Bob Dravek, our leader, was outstanding in all respects. He was knowledgeable, caring and competent. Our accomodations at the KBarS Lodge were also outstanding. The pastoral venue was truly representative of the area and we enjoyed watching the deer herd graze while waiting for dinner. The staff were friendly and made sure that they took care of all of out needs. The food service was outstanding. There was no way that we could have seen as much if we were traveling on our own. The only downside was the pace of the trip. Most of the attendees were seniors and we could have used a little downtime. We will definitely take more Road Scholar trips.

No screw ups. Lots of time doing things and nice lectures by erudite instructors. No crisis of any kind. Clean and clear air. Polite people everywhere. Unexpected pleasures in talking to Native americans, the paleontology museum in Hill City, the Comstock mine, lack of obnoxious tourists in general.

We were “on the road” more than most Elderhostel programs. These daily field trips were well scheduled with ample time at each attraction. Clean and frequent restroom stops were planned. In addition to classroom speakers, our group leader, Jerry Gau, gave informative, interesting and entertaining commentary as we drove through the beautiful countryside. The KbarS Lodge staff was especially friendly and helpful. The Manager would meet our bus upon returning each day with a warm and friendly welcome. Highly recommended.
