The Silk Road trip was perhaps the best learning experience/vacation I've ever taken. It filled a huge void in my knowledge of Central Asia. I never realized what a huge part these countries added to world history for over 1,000 years. Despite often less than gourmet food and one marginal hotel, it didn't diminish the overall experience. I would certainly highly recommend this trip. Ray McKinley

Now that I have been home a couple weeks and have had time to look at pictures and reflect on the Silk Road trip I realize what a wonderful and unique experience it was. Everyone wants to know about central Asia which is difficult to describe in short since all the countries we visited are so different from one another. A part of the world that was dark to me has come to life. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to explore it and meet many interesting people while doing so. Joan

Traveling with Road Scholar to Central Asia "On the Silk Road" fulfilled a longing I have had to see that "exotic" region where the names of the cities evoke mystery and intrigue. Some of those mysteries and intrigues came alive with our introduction to the astronomer UlegBeg, and with our discovery that some of history's "tyrants" have evolved amazingly into "heroes". What a host of great surprises!

Ellin from Missoula, MT Date Attended: 06/07/12-06/25/12 Excellent program. Please read previous review from Marsha as we were on the same program and I agree with it entirely. Each country visited has its own unique beauty and personality and it would be difficult to pick one over the other. That said, Samarkand is not to be missed (nor Bukhara or actually any of the others). Central Asia is incredibly rich in arts and architecture. The trips from one area to the next were sometimes challenging but worth the effort to experience this often missed part of the world. We found local people welcoming and they often wanted to pose with us in their photos! Physical fitness is a necessity for this trip.

Excellent program. Main tour leader is very experienced and knowledgeable about navigating the Central Asian countries. He also has an incredible depth of knowledge about history and culture which he is happy to share. Our group included 16 very experienced travelers. Agree with previous comment about being in good physical condition. In June be prepared for dry heat (100 degrees plus). Also be prepared to walk yourself and your luggage across all the borders where you'll get an excellent opportunity to observe and interact with the locals. Highly recommend this program.
