This Road Scholar adventure was a fascinating exploration into the history and development of the five boroughs of NYC. The trip leaders were organized and well-informed. The description says there are about five miles of walking per day, but if you opt for the evening activities, count on more like nine. (In other words, take good walking shoes!)Take advantage of these evening tours if you are able, as they are just as fun and informative as the daytime jaunts. We had wonderful meals at various ethnic restaurants, and generally there was time to explore the neighborhood area before lunch. You are expected to wear some geeky red hats so everyone can keep track of members of the group, but some people knew this ahead and brought their own cute red hats. It definitely is an advantage to look up if you get away from the group and see some others in red hats. Don't count on going to the main highlights of NYC, such as the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, or the 9/11 Memorial, but you do have a free afternoon do one of these things. Many people booked theater tickets on our free evening, and you should consider staying a couple of days afterward to see some things that the tour misses. The tour gave me just enough information to want to return to NYC!!

I attended two Road Scholars trips back to back and really got to see lots of New York city and the 5 bourghs. It was great having so much time in one place and only having to fly once for two programs! What a deal!

Enjoyed my first Road Scholar adventure, met some new people and learned many new things about New York. The only bad thing I would say about the program is eating dinner at 5pm just didn't work for me.

I loved my Road Scholar tour of NYC. It was well organized with a blend of sites to see, experiences to enjoy and neighborhoods to explore. The guides and educational experts were superb. I would recommend Road Scholar to everyone and plan to go on another Road Scholar tour myself

This program keeps participants on the go enjoying a variety of sites throughout the day interspersed with good meals. There are also exceptional NY experiences offered as options on all evenings except the "free" day.

5 Boroughs in 5 days was a wonderful experience. Never again will I think of New York as Manhattan of the iconic landmarks. Never will I walk through the streets without looking up at buildings and appreciate not only their beauty and grandeur, but the different eras of their design and function. Never again will be beholden to the expensive taxi journey because I have gained the sophistication of a confident subway rider. And never again do I eat inferior and expensive tourist fare, because now I know of the borough areas where wonderful less expensive ethnic food restaurants that can reached by subway and make me feel I am in the real New York. Thank you Road Scholar, as you can guess it was a wonderful week.

See New York as a native!

Be prepared to walk--a lot--right into an amazing world of the real New Yorker. Everything from history to lifestyle to mores is explored. The pace is part of the message. Happy hustle and bustle with a generous helping of a caring attitude. I'd repeat this program in a heartbeat! Not for people who have difficulty with stairs or brisk walking.

Positives: Great optional evening excursions offered: Empire State Building, Central Park, High Line, Chelsea Market, Financial District, World Trade Center site & 911 Memorial, Greenwich Village. Family style meals not so great for a vegetarian with limited options to share dishes offered. Had good luck with Chef Yu's Chinese restaurant but only 1 entree offered for me for Uncle Nick's Greek restaurant while all the other people had 2 meat entrees to eat. Tick Tock Diner was great...had 3 breakfasts there...all very good. Bag lunch for Staten Island Ferry ride not so great. Dry sandwich, no chips, chemical tasting wrapped bag cookies. No lettuce or tomato or mustard with sandwich...only mayonnaise packet in bag. Orange was fruit choice...apple would have been easier to eat. Knowledgeable tour guides who really knew their stuff! Different personalities led to different experiences with each one! Limit group size to 24. 32 people on this tour was way too big. Made it harder to maneuver in the subways & just getting around the neighborhoods & places we went to. Get more comfortable listening device earpieces. Had lots of discomfort with the earpiece in my Quietvox device & it kept falling out at inopportune times! Loved the Staten Island Ferry ride, the Brooklyn Bridge walk & the lecture by Christopher Moore. He had a great sense of humor & was funny. Didn't like when he read long passages from his notes...too boring & hard to follow. Lose the 1 1/2 hours spent at the Lighthouse Museum on Staten Island...plan to see the St. George neighborhood & artist colony instead.

Wonderful experience! Like most participants we had already experienced some of Manhattan, but expanded our comfort zone for visiting other parts of the city.

. For a large group of seniors with differing walking abilities to be able to stay together crossing busy Manhattan streets and to keep together getting on and off subway cars, takes very good organization. Molly, John, Angela and the Explore NY staff did just that, extremely well! . We loved the walking tours of borough neighborhoods, being able to see people walking their dog, pushing a baby carriage, enjoying the parks, doing their shopping. It gave us a great glimpse into NYC as a living city, not just the wheeling-dealing, jet-set megalopolis that you see on TV. Also, eating in neighborhood restaurants with locals was nice. . Tbe excellent staff made what could have been a hectic and over-whelming experience, a real delight!

Learned a lot about NYC and its history. Had no idea there were so many wonderful parks and how essential they are to life in the city. It was fascinating to learn the impact Snug Harbor had on so many sailors. Really enjoyed the entertaining and informative presentations. Was gratified to see so much renovation and re-purposing of buildings and the old elevated High Line. Had tasty Greek, Sri Lankan and Italian meals in comfortable neighborhood restaurants. Started learning how to navigate the subway system. The leaders, presenters and program participants were a lot of fun to be with.

We live in a medium-sized city in the desert of southeastern Washington, D. S. (Da State), and had never tried either Road Scholar and had never been to New York City. The program was a perfect match with what we came to the city for, and we felt it a very good value. Having both our hotel and many meals provided was a great advantage, because one's first visit to a place is mainly a course on what would be done differently if there were a next time. We learned a great deal about the five boroughs that make up the city, and were especially impressed by the many change in those boroughs over time. We'll definitely do more Road Scholar tours.

Great way to see the Five Burroughs. Make sure you bring extra comfortable walking shoes as you will be walking about 5 miles on each of several days.

Susan from Asheville, NC Number of programs attended: 3

Road Scholars might not consider this trip to be an "environmental" experience but there were lots of opportunities to learn about and be surrounded by nature, even in the dense boroughs - lots of walks in green spaces, water, etc. - delightful respite from the hustle and bustle of the streets. The High Line and city parks are amazing.
