Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

It was a wonderful opportunity to teach children things about their country that they will probably not learn in school My almost 11 year old grandson enjoyed the experience immensely. His only complaint was that he did not have enough time to spend in the museums. He enjoyed interacting with the other children and kept notes in his workbook so he could report back to his parents. I enjoyed watching his enthusiasm over exploring all the places he had only read about. On our free time we visited Arlington Cemetery and watched the changing of the guard.

In general, Hendrika, Dirk and I enjoyed our fast-paced week in Washington, D.C. I enjoyed the variety of sights and ease of visiting because of the planning and experience of our very talented guide.

What was missing was some discussion of context, both historical and institutional, of what we seeing. This could be provided by appropriate reading, especially for the young members of the tour. For instance we passed by the Pentagon on several occasions; what goes on there? why was it built? why does it have to be so big? The Capital tour was led by an accomplished speaker who had an encyclopedic knowledge of the art work, etc., but what goes on there? I was lookimg for more than Comgress makes laws. Perrhaps this can be accomplished by giving the guide more instructional time with the younger students. There was no qustion cocnerning our guide having the ability to this.

The accomodations were clean and adequate; however, the management of hotel appeared remote and inept. Meals were adequate.
I would scratch Cavanaughs and the Hard Rock Cafe. I have never felt as unwelcome in any resturant as I did in the HRC.

My 12 year old grandson and I greatly enjoyed this Intergenerational trip to Washington D.C. We found the mix of lectures and field trips just right for the time allotted. My grandson was very interested in all the information that our very knowledgeable tour guide presented to us and every day he has continued to recount things we experienced on the trip to his parents. Our fellow participants were all friendly and pleasant. The children quickly formed friendships among themselves during the week and most of them seemed to be having a good time while learning about our country's history and government. The food for the most part was good, although a few meals were not. Our room in the hotel was clean and comfortable. All in all I feel it was a wonderful experience to share with my grandson and hopefully one he will always remember.

Myron from Chestertown, MD Number of programs attended: 10
Date attended: 07/05/11 - 07/10/11
We found the program to be well designed and executed. It maximized the number of Washington venues that can be visited in the allocated time, yet afforded some flexibility in choosing among museums on the Mall.

Our program leader was wonderful--offering insights to the youth about the venues and events associated with them as well including additional exercises for them. She is so creative it would have been great if she had been given more latitude by the program organizers to incorporate even more youth-centered activities. Even so, our 11-year old granddaughter was engrossed in the content, the sites we visited and our leader's youth activities.

We had attended in 2008 with two grandsons, and the program leadership was much better this time.

From our view the only serious weakness was the restaurant food in contrast to the very good food offered by the museum cafeterias.

Thomas from Whittier, NC Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 07/05/11 - 07/10/11
This Road Scholar program (as opposed to other programs we have attended including Intergenerational) has "lost its way." Unclear mission as to whether or not it should educate young people or their grandparents so they chose to do neither. Immensely talented tour guides were underutilized. They indicated they were discouraged by their company from being too involved in "teaching" or special time with the young people. If one stayed next to guides at the multiple stops they were wonderful but their wealth of knowledge was not shared with group and there was almost no group instruction for the young persons...many of whom were obviously bored beyond belief.
