Road Scholar
Program #3788RJ
11 Days | 10 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Bobbi Porter from Guelph Ontario Canada This was my 6th road Scholar trip. The title of this trip describes it well. We had excellent lectures and guides throughout. The hearing devices were a great improvement over ones used 2 years ago in Alaska. This wasn't an active tour. It would have been good if we could have had time to walk in Cape Breton, and perhaps have a little less time in souvenir shops. Its too bad we has to miss Mahoney Bay. Perhaps we could have had less time at Peggy's Cove. Both Susan, our Road Scholar guide, and our coach driver, Jim were excellent. I would recommend this trip for a good overview of the Eastern Provinces.

This was our third Road Scholar trip. We've always wanted to see Nova Scotia so we chose the History and Culture of the Canadian Maritimes tour. It was a wonderful experience with just the right amount of lectures and tours. Presenters were knowledgeable and share a wealth of information about the history of the area. We found the people of Nova Scotia, PEI, and New Brunswick to be very welcoming and friendly. Food and accommodations were excellent. I would not rate this as an active tour. The most walking we did was on our own.

I must totally agree with my fellow travelers. This was a great trip. Nova Scotia is so beautiful and Prince Edward Island is as tranquil and lovely as you might imagine. Anne did a superb job of bringing everyone in the group into this great experience. She showed great kindness and shared wonderful and welcome humor. I would love to go back.

Everything was very nice. Anne was the perfect leader and kept us informed of all the site activities and events. It was an especially wonderful adventure and both Doris and I enjoyed the leader, fellow passengers, and all the sites and lectures. The seafood was excellent. Ed and Doris

This tour was my first with Road Scholar and I wasn't sure if it would meet my requirements - it did so and more. The leader and lecturers were exceptional(Anne raised the bar on group leadership to a level that it would be hard for others to meet), the program was very accurately described and met all the stated goals, the other participants were friendly and great fun to be with. As a single traveler I felt totally welcomed. We drove many miles but always had enjoyable things to see and do at the end of each drive. The bus was comfortable and there was plenty of room to spread out. The lodgings were first class and the food delicious. If you have never been to the Canadian Maritimes you are in for a treat.

This program will go down in our memories as highly rewarding and very beautiful! Who can beat stellar ocean views, fun activities, overall great food, fun conversations, and friendly natives! Our tour guide Anne Matheson kept us on point while still giving us opportunities to stretch, be on our own, enjoy new friends made on the trip and keep us updated on what we would see and where we were going. Local guides were well chosen! I was impressed with the eco-conscience of the area, the EVERY one recycles here attitude and the idea that the people OWE the land, not the other way around. Yes, we had to take the coach everywhere, but had plenty of breaks. With 34 peeps, you can't rent taxis to get you to ALL the great towns and sites we visited. This was a cultural and history "buffet" and for the amount of land we covered in the number of days, it was well planned and orchestrated. This was a good weather time to go as well. In fact, warmer than expected! Definitely "KEEPER" program!!

Susan P. from Naples, FL Number of programs attended: 6

This program was a step back to simpler times, with fabulous vistas and welcoming Canadians, eager to show off their Provinces. It was a program that will not dissapoint.

Sharon from Grass Valley, CA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 08/20/14 - 08/30/14
This was an absolutely wonderful experience! Local experts were knowledgeable, interesting, and fun. Group leader Anne, along with bus driver Terry, were amazing! We traveled approximately 1,800 miles which included some early a.m. starts with each day filled with multiple delightful activities. The reward was an unforgettable experience of incredible scenery, amazing people and places.

The trip gives a very comprehensive picture of this part of Canada. Lots of local color are included.

Katharine from San Jose, CA Number of programs attended: 10
Date attended: 08/20/14 - 08/30/14
Katharine from San Jose.I enjoyed looking at lush green trees, fields, and water views. Bay of Fundy most amazing. Happy to have seen "Anne, the Musical". Fortress and citadel impressive. Local guides knowledgeable. Tour leader Anne most helpful to me over some paperwork glitches.

Alice K. from Felton, DE Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 08/20/14 - 08/30/14
This program provides a view of nature in its grandest majesty. It is definitely food for the mind and the soul!

Susan from Glendale, CA Number of programs attended: 31
Date attended: 08/06/14 - 08/16/14
The positive points of the trip were: 1. Outstanding tour leader Susan. 2. Awesome bus driver Terry. 3. Good food and hotels. 4. Lovely scenery. The negative aspect was the long bus ride-1500 miles and the many long days sitting on a bus watching the same scenery go by. If you like sitting on a bus for 4 to 7+ hours per day, then this trip is for you.

Florence from New York, NY Number of programs attended: 26
Date attended: 08/06/14 - 08/16/14
Wonderful scenery, good food and hotels but long hours on the bus. If you don't mind 4-7 hours daily on a bus, you would be happy with this trip.

Nancy from Morro Bay, CA Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 08/06/14 - 08/16/14
I thoroughly enjoyed the program. But there were some people on the trip who complained about the long hours spent on the bus. I do not know how they expected to see all the sites we visited, driving 1500 miles without long travel times. But if this would bother you, maybe this is not your trip.

Barbara from Encinitas, CA Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 06/11/14 - 06/21/14
Great trip with a lot of interest and beauty to see - But one should go no earlier than July so the environment and tourist facilities would be more conducive.

well done

Donna from Capitola, CA Number of programs attended: 14

I have recently completed the Maritime Provinces History and Culture program and am thrilled to say it was one of the best of the 12-15 Road Scholar trips I've attended. The breadth and depth of lectures and field trips have augmented my understanding of the importance of Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. I loved learning that the classic house color scheme of white exterior with black trim and shutters is because the St John's ship hulls are always painted black and the left-over paint is used for house trim. Waste not-want not.

Joseph from Odenton, MD Number of programs attended: 1

We think that the Road Scholar experience was outstanding and will highly recommend it to others. We will also use the service again. Our tour leader, the coach driver and the instructors and guides were all outstanding.

If you have not been to the Canadian Maritimes and do not know much about the history there, this is the program for you. The program lives up to the high expectations we have of Road Scholar programs and their educational component.
