ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

As a history buff, I was amazed about how little I really understood about the times leading up to the American Revolution. This Road Scholar adventure should be considered a must for anyone who wishes to gain a better understanding of the motivations of the people who made those times so exceptional.

This program was excellent! The leader Dorit was very friendly and knowledgeable. The Boston Park Plaza was a great location in downtown Boston, much preferred over the hotel in the Navy Yard.

My second Road Scholar trip -- the blend of lectures and tours was excellent. Walking the Freedom Trail, having history come alive, and seeing a modern city in light of the places where the American revolution was born -- powerful. This program was well planned and executed by Road Scholar. Well worth the time and money.

BOSTON : BIRTHPLACE OF AMERICAN LIBERTY is an excellent program led by an expert on Boston's "Freedom Trail" and the events in Massachusetts leading up to the Revolutionary War and the siege of Boston.

This is a well designed program lead by very informed leaders. It allows you to see many of the Early American sites in the Boston area that would be very difficult to accommodate on your own. Boston is near impossible to navigate by car, so having somebody take care of all the transportation needs or show you the ropes on how use the public transportation system makes the program extremely worthwhile.

The Freedom Trail Program is not to be missed! It is very special to walk in the footprints of our founding fathers in historic buildings. This program exceed our expectations by a mile.

It was a great trip! Here, I taught history for awhile and still I learned so much. The thought of the road to Boston , with bodies of dead British soldiers all along the way-just chills me. Marg Deason

Jeanine and Pierre, France Number of programs attended : 5 Date attended : 06/01/14 - 06/06/14 We did enjoy our program in Boston for few different reasons : - We leaned a lot, thanks to Charles and Dorrit, about Boston today and the revolution in the past. - We did appreciate people in the group, and the informal discussions through which we knew each other little by little. - We liked to get the ferry regularly Many thanks to all participants, who welcomed us in the group, and made our stay so nice.

The Boston trip lived up to all my expectations. So much history and culture coming to life. DorritTurner was an exceptional leader! Charles Bahne is so knowledgable and has such an easygoing way of imparting his knowledge. The participants in our program were great! I loved the entire 6 days!!

What a terrific experience for my wife and I! We had a wonderful time getting to know the rich heritage of Boston and its connection to all of us historically and culturally. We had an exceptional group leader, Dorrit Turner, and engaging instructional leader in Charles Bahne. Our group was made up of very special people. How lucky are we! Thanks!

Stephanie from Waldorf, MD Number of programs attended: 1

This program was amazing. I learned so much and had a great time. The activity level is described as active, which road scholar defines as walking up to 2 miles a day, and I would say it was closer to 3. Which wasn't a problem, the places we walked were beautiful. Overall, it was such an amazing experience.

Patricia from Severna Park, MD Number of programs attended: 2

This is a terrific program with excellent leaders. We learned so much more than we expected, and enjoyed while participating!

While on my most recent Road Scholar program my friend and roommate became ill. The staff and tour guide made plans to get her medical help immediately and that lessened her medical problem drastically.

Fall foliage colors are a bonus bonanza to this historical experience of Boston if you choose the October tour dates. Following the ride of Paul Revere, walking the Freedom Trail in Boston, exploring the eighteenth century buildings...all awaken an appreciation for our origins and patriots.

Diane from Windsor, CA Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 08/25/13 - 08/30/13
The American Revolution was made alive to me. We learned so much more than what is given in history classes in school. The lectures were thorough and the field trips were most informative. The history and beauty of the US East Coast whetted my appetite to return. An extra day spent at the Kennedy Museum and Library was extraordinary -- should be part of the program too.

Katherine from Denver, CO Number of programs attended: 1

Dorrit was an outstanding leader, and showed her concern and care for everyone in the group. Since this was my first Road Scholar trip, I am very glad she was the leader!!!!

Marilyn from Elgin, IL Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 09/08/13 - 09/13/13
We learned so much about the city of Boston, past and present, the people who lived there, and the events that took place leading up to the Revolutionary War. We enjoyed taking the ferry back and forth to our hotel in Charlestown. The skyline of Boston at night was breathtaking. Well-paced and well-organized tour with just the right amount of free time!

Our Boston experience was refreshingly enlightening. We found it well organized in all areas: accommodations, meals, travel, program presentations, and most of all the warmth of our two leaders Dorrit and Charlie. What I once thought of us as just history a long time ago became highly relevant to me today. I was reminded that liberty and justice do not come without a price and dedication to take care of what we have created. In this case a diverse nation united in fairness and rights for all our citizens.

This was our third Road Scholar program, and we've enjoyed each one. This one (Boston: Birthplace of Liberty)was terrific. We couldn't ask for more pleasant and professional leaders than our guide, our lecturer, and the Road Scholar staff from the Boston office. Of course the topic is an exciting and interesting one, but it was presented with such variety. Every day brought a new experience.

Here's a really informative tour of historical Boston led by a knowledgable guide. Bonus: staying in the Charlestown Navy Yared, a dramatically updated venue of converted offices and new restaurants.

After six hiking trips, I decided to enroll in a Road Scholar historical program that included water ferry, subway, and bus transportation, as well as walking. I was extremely pleased with the quality of this "American Revolution" program. A well balanced mix of lectures and on-site visits to historical sites made the program very effective and educational. The week was well managed by Dorrit Turner, and Charles Bahne provided a knowlegeable narrative each day. He provided us with some personal information about the historical characters that I found to be very interesting. To cap off my comments, only Road Scholar could provide a surprise bit of irony; while we were standing on the site of the "Boston Massacre", the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, came through the site with a police escort. Because of the tinted windows in his SUV, I don't know whether he was wearing a red coat or not. Pat Malloy - San Angelo, TX.
