4 Days | 3 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Easy
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

We just completed "Close to Home: The US and Its Neighbors" today and found it an enlightening experience as we traveled via lectures all over South America, Cuba Venezuela and Canada to the north. The speakers (and we had many) were extremely well-versed and answered lots of questions from the participants. Unfortunately we only visited the embassy of Mexico because the Canadian embassy was not available. Our group leader instead took us to see the Cherry Blossoms in full bloom as an added attraction. All in all a very worthwhile learning adventure that I would recommend. However, much of the time is spent on lectures not on foot so be prepared.

Intensive program with much material presented, mostly in an historical way and with recollections.

Some lectures were really outstanding and very lively. These were memorable, as much for the subject as for the representative. Follow-up give and take among the attendees added to this positive experience.
Only one presenter was out of bounds showing a distinct bias in his subject area.

I attended the February program ("Diplomacy at Work: Politics of the Middle East and North Africa") and *loved* it. The speakers were, without exception, excellent. In addition to being obviously intelligent and knowledgeable people with huge amounts of first-hand experience in the areas they were talking about, they were also excellent speakers. I knew the program would be interesting but had thought that surely at some point I would get tired of sitting and listening to presentations. It didn't happen. I loved every minute of the three days.

AFSA was a wonderful, stimunating, informing. program. I now understand why we need the Foreign Service.

The content of this program should be mandatory for all of our Senators and Congress.

Outstanding program! Quiet friendly boutique hotel near Embassy Row. World class professional diplomats (several former Ambassadors and Consul Generals among them) with enormous expertise in Middle East shared their insights freely with an unusual bright and inquisitive (even for Road Scholar!) group, resulting in a highly informative interactive session. Leader was an experienced retired senior Foreign Service officer; she explained as clearly as possible how the Foreign Service works. Fantastic trip to the Turkish Embassy where we were graciously served Turkish tea then the Political Counselor spoke to our group privately in a winsome forthcoming manner about Turkish foreign policy. Like three days in a Middle East Think Tank, in fact, CSIS counldn't have done better! Three full days, just right. Wonderful!
