This was the best Road Scholar Program I have ever attended. Stephen Cole was just fantastic. He is so knowledgeable about every aspect of the theater and his enthusiasm about the subject is contagious. In addition, he was very approachable and was extremely helpful to all of the participants. Speakers were also excellent. I will definitely attend this Program again.

This is an outstanding program for all theater lovers, regardless of their familiarity with the NYC theatre scene. It begins with a splendid tour of the theatre district led by Stephen Cole, who is a fountain of knowledge about all aspects of NYC theatre, and includes a backstage tour of a working theater. Following this are three shows--usually an Off-Broadwa production, a Broadway drama or comedy, and a grand Broadway musical. (We were fortunate during this program to see two of the 2014 Tony winners, but the shows are always excellent.) For the more experienced, the presentations by a varity of theatre practioners are extremely interesting (these may be writers, directors. In addition, the group discussions after each show tend to be very lively and insightful. This was my third time to participate in thie program, and I am sure to repeat it in the future,

If you love theater you should put this program at the top of your list. It's the best we have ever attended. Stephen Cole leads the program and has an encyclopedic knowledge of Broadway, from the buildings to every musical that ever played there. The speakers were themselves actively involved in Broadway theater and very informative. Just a great program, and one you can do more than once since the shows change from year to year.

I enjoyed this program, my first Road Scholar program, very much and would highly recommend it to everyone who enjoys live theatre and exploring the culture and history of same. Just remember to have or purchase good walking shoes. You are going to need them!

Well organized..the plays were marvelous and so were all the speakers. Hotel is comfortable and located near the subway and close to the Broadway area. The guides were cheerful, helpful and kind. I will do it again.

This is an exceptional program. We feel we gained a wonderful view of the world of Broadway theater. We were amazed at the quality and distinction of speakers. For example, one of the leading actresses in a musical we went to see was one of the speakers for our small group. Another speaker was the author of the play we attended. We enjoyed The New Yorker Hotel. The meals were fine, especially the fine lunch we had at the famous Sardi's. If the world of theater is of interest to you, you probably won't find a better program.

Wonderful group, food, programs, plays, and especially the people in charge. If you have an interest in the theater this program is for you.

Janet from Chicago, IL Number of programs attended: 4

Got a lot of bang for the buck. Pre play discussions were given by the writer of one of the plays and the star of the other. Post play discussion added greatly to the matinee we saw. Many in the group had obviously made play going a major part of their lives. They had great questions and comments. I would definitely try this again.

This was my second time to participate in this program, and both have been wonderful experiences. I have visited New York City many times over the years and seen numerous Broadway, Off-Bropadway, and Off-Off Broadway productions, but this program always provides new insights into the theater world. The range of shows scheduled provide a wonderful overview of what New York theater has to offer, and the lectures enhance that overview. The discussion this year by the lead producer of "Buyer & Cellar" was outstanding and added much to the experience of seeing that show that evening. The group leader, Stephen Cole, is wonderful and provides valuable additional insights. In additon, the included meals at Chez Jacqueline and Sardi's were delicious. I look forwarde to attending this program again next year.

We have attended two prior Road Scholar programs and one was in New York, but this was far and away the best. Everything about this week has been exceptional but we would be remiss if we did not single out our guide and theater guru, Stephen Cole. He is a talented musical lyricist, actor, historian, author, story teller and just a lot of fun to be with. All five days were enjoyable and we were sorry when it came to an end. I think we must come back.

Janis from Mill Valley, CA Number of programs attended: 7

This was the eighth program I have done with this provider (Explore New York) and the second time I have done this particular program. All aspects are enjoyable, but especially Stephen Cole who is not only a talented lyricist and book writer for musical theater but a performer himself. The program is so well organized that there is free time for participants to attend additional productions over and above the three included in the program or shop, or sight visit museums etc. I particularly enjoyed the interview and Q & A with a prominent Broadway producer. I will be back for more NYC programs. A+++++ for all aspects of this fun and educational program.

This program was so enjoyable that I am already planning another Road Scholar trip to New York next year.

Superb! Steve with his knowledge, patience, excitement, stories he shared, and his finale was a very special end to the trip. The experience that included a small, contemporary play coupled with extravaganza with celebrity actor and finally a musical. The speakers added to our understanding of theater...we not only listened to them, but were offered Q and A, which sent me home with answers to my questions I brought with me. Molly and Audrey were so personable. The hotel location was a pleasant surprise. The cost of the program was a value for what my husband I got out of it....Sardis! Chez Jacqueline!(low cost meals to support these treats is a must)Playbills will be read with more time spent on who did all the writings. Will look frequently for Stephen Cole, Jonathan Tolins, Rachel Bay Jones, Elliott Cohen and whomever was the great one who handled the interviews. Oh...the tour of the New Amsterdam where we got further knowledge especially in wardrobes, props and how old, historical buildings can be restored by those who use their money so others can enjoy their projects. Enough...you get the idea: Great Velvet Curtain program!

Great theater and lectures, great companions, great food, and an amazing leader (thanks Steve!)--a wonderful trip.

Judy from Castro Valley, CA Number of programs attended: 1

The Behind the Velvet Curtain Program was absolutely wonderful. The best part about it, besides the plays, was the knowledge and sense of humor that our guide, Stephen, brought to the group. He was also very kind and considerate to all members of the group. What a gem! The hotel was well situated for getting to the plays and for exploring New York via the subway. I would recommend this trip to anyone who loves New York and Broadway plays.

Gerrell from Austin, TX Number of programs attended: 9
Date attended: 11/12/12 - 11/16/12
This was an outstanding program. The variety of the shows included was great, and I believe that the pre-show lectures, the talk-back with the actors after "Tribes", and the lively discussions among the participants after the shows added a deeper dimension to the experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the visit to the New Amsterdam Theatre and the pre-matinee lunch at Sardi's. And the way Stephen Cole facilitated the entire program made it a complete delifht.

Nancy from Arnold, MD Number of programs attended: 10
Date attended: 11/12/12 - 11/16/12
This program is excellent. The talks and discussions about the plays and musical we saw really were educational. The location is very good. The leadeer knowledgeable, enthusiastic and interesting.

William from Bastrop, TX Number of programs attended: 7
Date attended: 11/12/12 - 11/16/12
We thoroughly enjoyed this program. To be honest, I was somewhat concerned about potential Sandy and Athena (the Nor'easter that came later) impact, but the Theater District and the Village (where we saw "Tribes") seemed unaffected. We are still discussing which of the three productions we enjoyed most; I must say that each was quite outstanding. On our free time on Wednesday I took the opportunity to revisit some of my old (44+ years past) haunts, and I could recognize them despite the passage of time.

Road Scholar has provided another superior travel experience for us, and we'll do it again.

Barbara from Vienna, VA Number of programs attended: 2

For anyone who loves the theater, this is a MUST DO program. The instructors and experience made me appreciate the theater even more. And who couldn't love mid-town NYC after this program!! Road Scholar does this program extraordinarily well and the New Yorker is a gem. Loved Sardi's and the Cafe Angelique!

Jane from S Burlington, VT Number of programs attended: 3

It was a wonderful time and very good value. I really felt well looked after. A good selection of shows.

If you love theater, this is the program for you! Fly into Newark, take the train for $8.50 to Penn Station and you're right across the street from the New Yorker Hotel. you will love the group leader, Stephen - you'll see great plays and the cast comes down for a talk-back afterwards. Then there are group discussions that are so interesting. Also tours of the theater district - they teach you how to go to Duffy Square and buy discount tickets! Informative programs by actual NY actors. I've done this program 3 times and can hardly wait to do it again.

Esther from Arlington Heights, IL Number of programs attended: 7

This program is much more than coming to New York and seeing a few plays. Experiences like having a discussion with the producer of an off-Broadway play ("Tribes") in the morning, seeing the play in the evening (after a fabulous bistro dinner in Greenwich Village), then enjoying a talk-back with the actors after the play cannot be matched on your own -- and this was just our first day! We felt like VIP's at our lunch at Sardi's, had a behind-the-scenes tour at the beautifully restored New Amsterdam Theater - including being let loose in a prop room so we could take try one and take photos with masks from Lion King, clothes from Beauty and the Beast, hats from Tim Rice's Aida, sit in The Little Mermaid's "Under the Sea" bathtub, as well as unfurl Mary Poppins' umbrellas and handle props from other shows too. The three performances selected (off-Broadway play, Broadway play and Broadway musical) for us to see were excellent and we had follow-up discussions where everyone was encouraged to participate. There is also free time on Wednesday evening to select an additional performance on your own, buying tickets the half-price ticket booth, if you wish. The program is well-orchestrated, well-paced with an excellent, enthusiastic, energetic, entertaining leader. Explore New York, which manages this program (and others) does an excellent job with all the behind-the-scenes details and organization that make it a memorable experience. This program can be done again and again as the selections for plays and musicals changes. I know I will be back!
