6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderately Challenging
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

This Program is packs a great deal into 5 days. Even though subways and buses are used, be prepared to walk, and take comfortable shoes along. Our group leader, Angela, and speakers were excellent. We saw a lot, learned a lot, and now have a new appreciation for the City and its people.

Karen from Shoreline, WA Number of programs attended: 2

Signature City-NYC 9/21 - 9/26, 2014 was a wonderful program. I am enjoying it all over again, telling friends what a great tour it was. Looking forward to planning another tour with Rhode Scholar.

Barbara from Concord, CA Number of programs attended: 4

Signature City New York: The Big Apple Experience: This is an excellent program put on by highly knowledgeable guides & speakers. Everything about this program changed my knowledge about New York City. Now, I very much like this City thanks to the Road Scholar Organization.

Sherri from Athens, IL Number of programs attended: 1

Signature City-NYC is a great program. Fantastic guides. You'll see a lot. Do LOT of walking. If you are not able to walk at least 3 miles a day, you should not enroll in this program. But, it is a great trip and we loved it. Angela (leader) is absolutely great.

Mary from Cedar Falls, IA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 09/21/14 - 09/26/14
I would highly recommend a tour with Road Scholar; their speakers were
well educated in their field and prepared us for each new experience.

Dwayne from Albuquerque, NM Number of programs attended: 32
Date attended: 09/21/14 - 09/26/14
This is the perfect introduction to NYC. From geography and history to current issues and activities, this program provides a well informed and interesting basis for your New York experience. We spent an extra week in the city after the program and the things we learned in the program helped us every day that we were on our own. I recommend it highly.

Zuma from Beaverton, OR Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 09/07/14 - 09/12/14
For first timers to New York City (which we were)this tour was a perfect orientation/acclimation to the city. The New Yorker Hotel is beautiful, conveniently located, and Road Scholar makes the price hard to pass-up. Angela our tour guide is a native and knew NYC amazingly well. All of the tours and lectures had merit. Except "NYC Experience" given on the last morning before our departure. The speaker actually showed video of himself singing a x-mas carol...what a literal wind bag. We were all bored to tears.

Beauford from Menifee, CA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 09/21/14 - 09/26/14
Going it alone in New York can be overwhelming. If you want to learn about the city, how to get around it and see its highlights, (at a great value) this is the program for you.

Dorothy from San Jose, CA Number of programs attended: 10
Date attended: 09/07/14 - 09/12/14
This was a well organized, informative program. This was my first time in New York, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The only suggestion I would make is to find someone else to do the Harlem tour. I felt the comments of the person who led this section were inappropriate.

Nancy from Carnegie, PA Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 08/10/14 - 08/15/14
To all who are considering this program-don't hesitate. It is truly worth your time, energy, and finances.

Mary Beth from Pewaukee, WI Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 05/11/14 - 05/16/14
This was my first Road Scholar trip and my first trip to New York. I was hesitant about going to New York, especially since I was walking with a cane but I participated in the activities I could and spent 2 days with my son who lives in New York. I loved the group activities and good food. I felt much more comfortable after spending these 5 days in New York. I have already booked my next Road Scholar trip to San Francisco.

Judith from Lenexa, KS Number of programs attended: 14
Date attended: 06/15/14 - 06/20/14
This program takes you to the critical sites you expect to see in NYC; also taking you on walks through various important neighborhoods. In addition, there is sufficient free time to explore places with a special interest to you.

Cheryl from Pittsford, NY Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 06/01/14 - 06/06/14
If you have never been to NYC, or have visited before, this program will treat you to an enriching and worthwhile experience. It's fun, culturally and intellectually stimulating and so worth doing.

Rick from Pipersville, PA Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 06/15/14 - 06/20/14
This was a very well organized experience with expert guides. My only recommendation would be to split the group from 32 to 16 using 2 guides in order to provide a more manageable group experience. My comfort zone for revisits has become at ease.

Sandra from Mahtomedi, MN Number of programs attended: 1

Frances from Arlington, VA Number of programs attended: 3

Martha from Rockford, IL Number of programs attended: 3

This program is a great overview of New York City for the first-time visitor. You get to see all of the tourist sites that are a "must", i.e. Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, Metropolitan Museum, Central Park, and other optional tours such as Greenwich Village. You learn how to get around in New York using the subways and buses. This is a very active tour and there is lots of walking. The hotel is great and the food is wonderful! Guides are helpful and knowledgeable. The program definitely leaves you wanting more of New York City!

Carolyn from Las Vegas, NV Number of programs attended: 11
Date attended: 03/30/14 - 04/04/14
This program is highly active. Be ready to see and learn about many of the highlights of Manhattan. The neighborhood walks are a must. It would be more than a good idea to include them in your schedule. Also, you will learn to "love" the subways.

Marlene from Maineville, OH Number of programs attended: 9
Date attended: 11/03/13 - 11/08/13
Introduction to the Big Apple was great for a first-time visit to New York City. Our guide was patient, good humored, and full of information about the city, its history and its landmarks. We learned so much. The activity-level description is accurate, so be prepared to walk a significant amount each day and to encounter crowded staircases at subway stations.

Judy from Ortonville, MI Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 11/03/13 - 11/08/13
This is a program unique in its various perspectives. It is as fulfilling and enjoyable as the others I've attended and expect to attend in the future.

Richard from San Diego, CA Number of programs attended: 9
Date attended: 10/06/13 - 10/11/13
This program should be seriously considered for all first time visitors to NY City. Five days is a short but useful time well spent. Additionally, dinners at ethnic restaurants are delightful evening distractions. The classes gives a visitor confidence for solo exploration of the Big Apple. Highly recommended.

Dana from Cloquet, MN Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 10/20/13 - 10/25/13
Before this tour we felt intimidated at the prospect of visiting New York, but how wrong we were! Now we look forward to going again on our own.

LINDA from Portland, OR Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 10/06/13 - 10/11/13
I love tne Signature New York Tour. It was my first time in New York. The 5 days were jam packed with all of the major highlights of Manhattan. By the end of the 5 days I felt like I had been in NY many times before. I felt perfectly comfortable going out on my own over the following weekend using the subway and buses. I then was enrolled in the 5 Days/5 Boroughs Tour. I highly recommend that people participate in both tours. By the end of the Boroughs Tour I felt like I would be able to fit in with everyone else in this wonderful City.

Susan from Shoreview, MN Number of programs attended: 6
Date attended: 10/06/13 - 10/11/13
I was amazed at the wonderful organization of this trip. With the aid of red baseball caps and battery-powered listening devices, our tour guide, Angela, led 50 participants expertly through the subway system and the streets of New York. The hotel was more than adequate, meals very good and the lecturers generally excellent. Considering the cost of downtown hotel rooms, this trip was an excellent value. I can truly say I love New York! Susan

Anne from Rochester, NY Number of programs attended: 7

This was the most wonderful time, it was better than I thought it would be and I learned so much about New York and my view of the people has changed. I loved New York and the people, they were friendly and helpful. The only person I had a problem with was someone that was a touriest.. he was mean to me, I guess he thought that I was a New Yorker, and when I left I felt like I was. Thank you Road Scholar for a wonderful memory

Margaret from Sault S Marie, MI Number of programs attended: 2

I attended the NYC Road Scholar trip 09/08/13 - 09/13/13 with 3 friends and came away absolutely loving the wonderful city. So vibrant and exciting!! The one problem we had was the size of the group. We would have appreciated an up front overview before we committed ourselves.

Sharon from Pittsboro, NC Number of programs attended: 7

First vacationing time in NYC for me. Road Scholar is definitely the way for seniors to see this busy city so filled with unique sights and sounds. Great info and direction from our Road Scholar team.

Carolyn from Childress, TX Number of programs attended: 1

Wonderful experience with Road Scholar for my first trip with them! Would love to spend even more time at the Statue of Liberty - however, under the circumstances of it being closed during "Sandy" damage, it was great just to see it briefly. Excellent lecturers that added to the NYC experience! Thank you Road Scholar for the wonderful memories made in "The Big Apple"! Would do it again!

Anne from Sun City Center, FL Number of programs attended: 6

Evelyn from Tracyton, WA Number of programs attended: 6

I was timid about seeing the" BIG CITY". The Big Apple Experience gave me such overall confidence in getting around and finding places to see that I am thankful that I chose it to start my exploration of NY. We were comfortable and delighted!

Esther from Arlington Heights, IL Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 11/04/12 - 11/09/12
"Signature City New York" is a fun, well-organized and well-paced program. The coordinator is excellent and has dealt with Road Scholar trips for many years. The speakers were well-qualified and interesting. I hadn't been to New York for 25 years and the program helped me get re-acquainted with the city. Of special note, I liked learning how the subway system works as it gave us the city on a silver platter.
