See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Luanne from Newaygo, MI Number of programs attended: 2 Date attended: 09/11/14 - 09/24/14 The tour was wonderfully organized and well planned to help with altitude adjustment. As I have had chronic problems with migraines, vertigo, and motion sickness, I should have known I would have difficulty adjusting to the altitude, and I did. Our guides took excellent care of me. I regret missing two of the day trips, but experienced wonderful sights and educational opportunities. Oxygen was available when needed and dietary accommodations were made when I needed them. And of course, the coca tea was a God-send!!

The evaluation forms don't allow you to page pack and forth and reflect on your answers without losing the entire narrative. Very frustrating when trying to provide thoughtful or nuanced feedback.

Fascinating tour. Learned much about early and current peoples of Peru and Bolivia. Travelling at this altitude is a challenge, but worth the effort.

larry samuels, Hilo Hawai'i, first RS program 2/13/14 - 2/26/14 Machuy Picchu was classic but the personal contact with locals, whether Andean natives or floating islanders on Lake Titicaca were the high points of my travels. Fewer shrines and churches and more village contact would be my 'next time"

Robert from Bellevue, WA Elevation varies from 8,500 to 13,600 ft. Not for anyone having problems at those heights. A great trip though and very educational.

Richard Part II I am sure, after seeing the ruins at /of Tiwanaku that the people from Tawanaku sailed to and colonized the Polynesean islands. Because of time we failed to see the Nazca lines, nor did we see the salt flats, from which we get our lithium. The city of LaPaz was amazing. The view of the city from the top of the canyon edge, looking down on a city of 2.3 million people, with the snow capped mountains in the background was worth the price of the whole trip. Finally, we were all surprised/delighted with the observatory located next to our hotel on Lake Titicaca. Our guide, outstanding as was every guide I have had while on a road Scholar trip, had an excellent knowledge of the stars of the Southern Hemisphere, including the southern cross and constellations. In all I was extremely pleased with all the aspects of this trip. P.S. Although we flew into Cuzco, located at 14,000 feet elevation, we immediately drank some cocaine tea, and took the bus down to the Sacred Valley, at 9,000 feet, and did little the first 36 hours as we became acclimated to the altitude. Oxygen was always available, but only one person, who had COPD, ever needed it.

The scenery is breathtaking. Our Guide was Maruja. She was like a "Guardian Angel." She took care of our many wants and needs. One Point: If you have breathing problems. think twice about the trip. You are over 10,000 most of the time.

I love to travel and always thought that our first trip of my retirement would be to Europe. My husband had been to Machu Picchu in the late 60’s and dreamed of returning. Due to the required activity level, we decided to participate in this program as our first big trip. I looked forward to the major sites, but had no idea that I would love the history and ruins, the country and its people as much as I did. I credit an outstanding Road Scholar program and the expertise of our wonderful guide, Maruja for my great enjoyment! Thank you for providing the trip of a lifetime. We look forward to traveling with Road Scholar again!

This was a fabulous trip, well planned to help you accommodate to the altitudes. We loved our Peruvian guides Ali and Miluska, the food was surprisingly good (Peruvians know how to cook!), nice group of participants. You will learn that pre-colonial Peru is much more more than Inca culture. Macchu Pichu, while wonderful, is only a small part of this trip, and that was just fine, as all of the experiences were well planned and fascinating. Indigenous people experiences felt authentic and respectful, not for show. Bolivian border crossing not our favorite, but Eric our Bolivian "ambassador" and the Bolivian program were excellent.
