Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

We participated in the April 28, 2013 program and enjoyed it very much! The lecturers were all knowledgeable and most were very effective speakers. All the performers were outstanding! Our field trips were Historic Jamestowne, Jamestown Settlement, Colonial Williamsburg (CW) and Yorktown, in order of attendance. We loved Colonial Williamsburg and wished we had two days there at least, instead of Yorktown which was our least favorite. The problem with Yorktown was it was rushed. We saw a film at the Visitor's Center but had no time to explore. We felt there should have been more time there or drop that trip entirely in favor of another CW day. The food was quite good. The accomodations were adequate though this Clarion needs some updating. For example there was no microphone for our speakers in a large meeting room, the Wifi signal was inconsistent, the in-room safe was not useable and our room key gave us trouble the whole week! However, it is quite convenient to the planned events and most of the staff were wonderful!

This was my 2nd RS program and I enjoyed it immensely.

Every single leacturer was a wealth of information and very charming to boot. I do agree, however, that at times the lectures were too long (over 2 hours in one case!) and badly needed some multimedia (the speakers simply droned on and on and on with no visual aids, hanouts, or audience participation). Hotel was comfortable. I would have appreciated a shuttle from hotel to town. Food was good but few low cal options.

Nice mix of free time and excursions. Really enjoyed the live performances where presenters enacted the role of someone living in Williamsburg in colonial times. Debbie Downs gave a thrilling performance (she is a fantastic singer) about African-American storytelling and music.

There is a fair amount of walking on this trip but nothing overly strenuous.

If you enjoy early American history, this is the trip for you!

In all respects this was a very interesting, well organized and extremely very informative program covering an critical stage in the history of this country.

Just completed the most recent program, which was also my first Road Scholar program. Very much enjoyed it and would highly recommend it. Good mix of lectures and tours. The speakers were all very well versed in their area.

This program was a good mix of lectures and field trips with delightful live performances included. I really felt as though I traveled back in time to Colonial Virginia!

Holly, the group leader made every effort to accomadate the group. She went out of her way to help us in any way she could.

This was a great program! Dave, the program Host, is very knowledgeable about the area, and he has assembled a great group of instructors and presenters.
We went first to the original site of Jamestown, including seeing several archeology digs in progress, then to the reconstruction of the Jamestown settlement, complete with period-costumed workers. The next day was Colonial Williamsburg, and lastly Yorktown. All of these trips were led by knowledgeable guides and instructors.
We also had presentations at the hotel - the town gossip from Yorktown, a former slave woman, and a handsome colonial gentleman who played for us on his Glass Armonica, like the one Benjamin Franklin had, a hurdy-gurdy (I'd never seen or heard one before), and on a pocket violin.
My only complaint about the whole trip was the humidity, which is certainly beyond the control of Road Scholar!

I would go again, and probably will!

Excellent program; exceptional instructors -- all were great and Dave DeSimone & Carson Hudson were outstanding. I enjoyed every minute of this week.

Unlike the earlier reviewer, I did not find the program overly academic. In fact, our group would have liked even more courses (and less free time). The format, which was very interactive, was fun and educational.

This program is appropriately rated as "4" for activity level. It is not exhausting, it but does require some walking in line with the guidelines. It sounds like the prior reviewer would have been better suited to a less active program (not a "4" level). While Colonial Williamsburg requires a lot of walking, the pace was generally very moderate. Even in the heat of August, the walking was very manageable. All in all, the week was a great combination of Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown.

Highly recommend this if you are at all interested in early American History.

My first Road Scholar was the 5 Day Charlottesville VA program on Jefferson, Madison & Monroe (Friends, Neighbors & Presidents). I really enjoyed that one, but this one far surpassed my expectations! Wonderful experience! Great time!
