Road Scholar
Program #20322RJ
16 Days | 15 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderately Challenging
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our Voyages to Antiquity program with Road Scholar. The itinerary as well as the entire trip were well organized, the guides were well informed, and helpful. It was the experience of a lifetime for us both.

Great: our guide. Her knowledge of history, mythology and religion were encyclopedic, and her shepherding skills worthy of a border collie. Poor: shipboard internet access was slow and expensive, but with large volume discounts. My advice: never buy less that 12 hour slots, and disconnect carefully at the end of each session. Ask at the desk how much time you have left, since they won't tell you online. Awful: 3 of 4 flights were delayed, the first by over 25 hours, so that I was a day late for the start of the tour.

Road Scholar's response:
Thank you for posting your feedback. Concerning the ship's internet capabilities, due to the nature of satellite connectivity on a board a ship, the internet connection is indeed slow, erratic and may be unavailable at times. We do recommend purchasing 4 non-consecutive hours of internet access (2014 season = $18 / 4 hours). Because of the slower connectivity, normal quick tasks, such as checking email can take several times longer than usual. Participants will likely use a good portion of the 4 hour block over the course of your time on board the ship. As you noted, please do not forget to log out of the computer. This is both for security reasons, as well as to ‘stop the clock’ on your paid time block.

Based on what I read and studied prior to the trip I had pretty high expectations. My expectations where exceeded over and over again. The planning, attention to details, the accommodations, the group leaders and on board lecturer, to name a few aspects of the overall program, made this trip well worth while. We are considering another Road Scholar trip in the near future as a result of this experience. Thank you.

This is a well done, hassle-free tour of great sites in ancient Greece and Asia Minor. I saw some wonderful things and learned much more about them than I did on a prior, non-Road Scholar cruise in the same part of the world.

The Voyage to Antiquity program was everything it was advertised to be. I feel that I now know much, much more about Istanbul, Turkey, and Greek classical history. The logistics were taken care of, the lodging and meals were excellent, the lectures were interesting and relevant, the excursions to historical sites were well thought out, and the shipboard part of the trip was great fun. The visits to two beautiful islands without much significant history were a welcome break, as we could just relax or hike to the top for great views. I'd recommend this trip very highly.

Program provided a view of the ancient world prior to Rome in a very vivid and visual manner. If you remember reading the Illiad or the Odyssey, this trip brings Homer's stories to life. Visiting mosques, palaces, churches, museums and ruins help you understand what life was like in ancient times and it's influence on today.

I have always dreamed of visiting the Greek Islands. WhenI saw this trip combined with Istanbul and Izmir, I knew it was time to go! The entire experience exceeded all my expectations. The sights we saw, the places we visited, the educational information provided to us, the camaraderie with fellow travelers, the caring and expertise of the guides, the hotel accommodations, and the ship's food, service and amenities made this the trip of a lifetime! I certainly plan to make many more trips with Road Scholar.

I can't say enough good things about the Aegean Odyssey-based programs. We have done two of them, Venice to Athens, and Athens to Istanbul. The Aegean Odyssey is a small ship and the emphasis is on the land-based programs rather than trying to dazzle you with shipboard activities. It is, however, very pleasant, and the Road Scholar program goes far beyond the standard ship program. For anyone who has an interest in that part of the world, I can't imagine a better introduction!

We have always been independent travelers so this was our first tour and first cruise. The Aegean Odyssey, the Road Scholar program and our guides set a high standard for our future trips. The Aegean Odyssey had comfortable cabins, a variety of good food, friendly staff plus musicians, lecturers and a library supporting the itinerary. The tender service was well organized and efficient. There were many opportunities to talk with other passengers who were not part of the Road Scholar groups. The Road Scholar program included all the highlights of the ancient world and provided excellent transportation and meals on each excursion. The guides were not only knowledgeable about the sights and cities but presented the history, art and architecture of Greece with talks infused with pride and love for their homeland. Elsa was our guide and tour manager and she used both humor and drama to ensure we never got bored. She enhanced her presentations with tales of mythology and word origins! Our guide in Istanbul was excellent and also candid about the progress and problems in Turkey. Is it possible that all Road Scholar programs are this good?

I'm really at a loss as to how to expand upon what has already been written about this program for the itinerary, sites, and accommodations were outstanding. I might only add that our group leader, Elsa Savvas, was the best guide I have encountered to date on any tour group I have been a member of. She quickly let us know that she was in charge, shared her expectations with us, and then proceeded to win us over with her love of art and history. As a retired teacher, I admired her ability to quickly set her parameters while establishing camaraderie within the group. The Aegean Odyssey proved to be the perfect sized vessel for this adventure....very stable in open waters, yet small enough for passengers to navigate easily. My husband and I enjoyed being lulled to sleep each evening with an ocean breeze streaming through our open balcony door and did not miss the extra 'frills' found on larger ships which we've sailed on perviously. I would only caution that the activity level of this program is not overrated and you should expect to be challenged on some of your trips ashore. Be sure to bring along a pair of serious walking shoes and leave those fancy sandals on the ship for dress-up dinners, ladies. The ancient ruins are challenging for their rough, uneven surfaces with changes in elevations...
