There's something unique about participating in a combination of grandeur, elegance and tradition. This is what one receives at a brief Road's Scholar Christmas program at the Grand Empress in Victoria, B.C. When one can combine all this with brisk, free time local walks from hotel to the coast, views of a lighted provincial capital, inner harbour and a well-planned program of trips and historical presentations, a very special Christmas can be enjoyed. A closer investigation into program components and accommodations is highly recommended.

Magnificent!! A wee bit of the olde Victorian Christmas that was joyful and gratefully without the crass commercialism . Hallelujah!

This program is NOT an "easy" program. Most of the activities cannot be done by people with mobility issues. I could not participate in the Burchart Garden trip because the bus was not wheelchair lift equipped. I could not participate in the castle trip because it involved going up a moderately steep hill, which a rented scooter cannot manage and even if I had been able to get to the door, there were six narrow steps to enter the castle and then 89 steps inside! I could not go on the nighttime wagon ride because the steps to get into the wagon were, again, very narrow and would not give a person with mobility issues and purchase n the steps. I had a good time with the people who were on the trip, but am very annoyed about all the things I missed AND paid for twice! Because I couldn't participate in the above activities, I had to pay for meals again!

Living in Victoria we had always wondered what Christmas at the Fairmont Empress would be like. This year we discovered that that experience was an absolute delight which exceeded all of our expectations. Thanks to Teresa Weir, John Adams, George Baker and all the staff of the various venues who treated us like royalty. Feasting on fabulous food was the major exercise of this tour - an activity we all happily enjoyed.

"Christmas at the Empress" was an enjoyable, wonderful experience. Weather, location, group tours and lectures were all first class. Local Victoria history that is connected to the history of Washington and Oregon proved to be very interesting. Service at the Empress was five star, with the classic PM tea and Christmas dinner standing outing as exceptional.

This is a great program for those who want to get away from the confusion of Christmas. The hotel is magnificent and the programs are interesting. For once we felt relaxed when Christmas was over.
