See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

My friend and I found early November to be a delightful time to take this trip. The weather was pleasant and warm and there were fewer crowds than usual at the tourist sites.

This trip is a must for people who love to travel to beautiful, interesting places and who want to learn about the roots of our civilization today. Well-organized and chock-full of experiences, Amalfi, Italy can't be beat!

Unbelievably amazing trip to Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. Jan Gilbert is incredibly good. Capri was especially beautiful as were the artifacts from Pompei and Herculaneum unbelievable. It did feel like we were going to fall off the mountain when driving on the Amalfi Coast narrow pass with low railing!

In a nut shell this trip was Fantastic. Well organized, truly beautiful landscape and coastline. Memories that will last the rest of my life. Bravo Road Scholar!!

This is a wonderful trip in every way! The Amalfi Coast is a breathtakingly beautiful part of Italy. Jan Gilbert (from New Zealand 40 plus years ago) is a delightful and well-organized tour leader. The various lecturers are all top-notch, and Claudio who accompanied us to the archeological sites and museums is unmatched. It was nice to be in Sorrento for 8 nights and not need to pack up frequently. Hotels were charmingly European, food (for the most part) delicious, good balance between activities and free time. Could not have asked for better weather: sunny and mid-eighties (F) the entire time. As always, the other participants were well-traveled, well-educated and interesting. This trip is a winner in every way. I highly recommend it!

If you have the Amalfi Coast on your list, this program is perfect! So many different ways were presented to have the group enjoy and learn about this beautiful and historically rich part of Italy. It is for people who have good mobility for walking among the ruins. Guides and presenters were outstanding.

This program was my 21st Elderhostel/Road Scholar experience...and the best one to date. It was content rich, well organized and executed, delightful Group Leader and Instructors, lovely food and very nice hotels, and great fellow scholars.

This was the first of what we had hoped to be many trips with Road Scholar - our “test” trip. The dismal experience with Road Scholar Travel overshadowed an otherwise wonderful trip. The group leader, lecturers, and especially the guides were all exceptional – knowledgeable, approachable and enthusiastic. The sites were stunning, and we were thrilled to meet so many delightful fellow travelers. Our return flight was cancelled. RS Travel never contacted us. We only found out about the cancellation when Air France emailed us. We repeatedly emailed RS Travel to get rebooking status. At this point we had no way home. It was impossible to reach an actual person. After receiving no response to our many emails, we called the emergency number (using hotel phone, no internatl calling on cell). Hours later Samantha returned our call, and said she’d get back to us via email soon with flight info.We never heard back from her or anyone from RS Travel. Hours later RS Travel emailed our group leader (not us) stating we’d have to stay overnight in Naples, find hotel ourselves, and get our own transportation to/from airport, and pay for everything ourselves. We used RS Travel because they are affiliated with the Road Scholar, and we (mistakenly) thought that they would they would provide valuable assistance in exactly this type of situation, with access to actual person, customer service that recognized the urgency of our situation, and prompt help in rebooking. Wrong on all counts. Instead, they provided no support, were almost impossible to reach and didn’t even attempt to keep us updated. We fully understand that flight cancellations are unavoidable, but how a travel service responds to the problem can be controlled. We should have ended our vacation refreshed and rejuvenated from the exceptional trip, instead we left incredibly stressed and disappointed. Do not use Road Scholar Travel expecting professional, personal service during a travel emergency.

Road Scholar's response:
We deeply regret the trouble you had in working with our Travel Services department to address the flight cancellation on your program. Our flight specialists successfully serve thousands of travelers every year on international flights and while this does not excuse the problems that came up with your airfare, I do wish to note that we immediately recognized the problem and issued a goodwill voucher of $1,000.00 to your account for the trouble. We always aim to provide exceptional customer service and again, apologize for any inconvenience you faced.

This program was everything we hoped for, and more. An amazing amount of different experiences were packed into our 12 days, thanks to our energetic and organized leader, Jan Gilbert (who is also personable and funny). It was nice to be able to stay just in two hotels, most of the time in Sorrento, a delightful place in itself. The places we visited were gorgeous and the archaeology fascinating. I want also to mention the brilliant lectures we had on Greek and Roman art and architecture and on Italian history and politics. The food was a mixed experience; we had some very good meals at restaurants included in the program (as well as some on our own), but some of the hotel meals were mediocre.

Besides the spectacular views of the Sorrentine and Amalfi coastlines, the terraced lemon and olive groves, the wonderfully flavorful food and the terrific people, Wes and I adored climbing Vesuvio. (Mt Vesuvius) This wasn't on the planned trip, however on our free-Saturday morning of the first week about ten people from out group of 27 set out. It was easy taking a train from Sorrento and then a bus to the base of Vesuvio. Giant all-terrain vehicles brought us near the summit. The hike was about 40 minutes from the drop-off point. The views on the climb were incredible. The trail is moderately steep with a rope railing and is lined with yellow and purple flowers growing in the grey lava soil. It was exciting to think about the historic significance of where we were hiking, especially since we'd been to Pompeii the day before. Altogether, it was a side-trip that made the entire visit even more special.

Louise and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Italy. The sheer variety of experiences was amazing; something different every day and yet we never felt overwhelmed. The lectures were informative and the guides highly competent. Jan is one of a kind in the most positive sense. She even came down to say goodbye at 3 am; what a woman. I am now going through several hundred photos and re-living the experience. A special thanks to Paula for taking the time to photograph all of us.

Barbara from Albuquerque. I agree with everything John from OR said except it was my 20th or more trip with Elderhostel and my first with Road Scholar. Thanks to everyone for using their arm when I encountered a stair without a banister. Jan is the best organizer and I looked forward to each day's stunning outfit.

My first trip to Italy and I was not disappointed. We had a wonderful time touring, sightseeing, experiencing, learning and visiting. My Italian improved slightly and on either end of the trip we struck out on our own with delightful results. I did not know exactly what to expect as this was a first Road Scholar program for me. So I'll compare it to other travel programs I've been taken. I found it to be extremely well organized and at the same time I was able to relax and enjoy the wonderful surroundings in Sorrento and Minori. The lodging was comfortable and the meals were a social time we thoroughly enjoyed. I have already recommended this program to my friends that travel. Many thanks to Jan, our energetic leader, who shared her Italy with us all. The guides and speakers added a multi textured level of understanding about Italy in general and the places we visited specifically. In telling about the trip to friends they commented "It sounds like the trip of a lifetime!" I will have to admit it was.

Very enjoyable program. Everything was well organized and handled beautifully. Only one complaint: the food was mostly uninteresting and unappealing. I had always heard that the Italians eat well but from this limited experience I must strongly disagree. The hotel food was plentiful but had no flavor at all. The restaurants we were taken to were also disappointing.

We very much enjoyed the entire program and wished the entire family could have enjoyed it with us. Claudio is so knowledgeable and passionate about the ruins and history of the area. Several times we felt we were living it in the moment. Jan is an absolute joy and is excited about sharing her Italy with you. The participants get so much from her and she goes above and beyond all expectations. Michela, Candi, Vincenzo, Linda and Enrica also bring passion and interest to their talks. The hotels are wonderful as are the staff and food. Since we have been home we have recommended the program to everyone we have spoken to. This was our first tour of any kind and will certainly look into tours again and will check our Road Scholar tours first.

I cannot envision a better trip. I had a wonderful time and loved every moment of it. The leader Jan kept us all learning and enjoying ourselves from the moment we arrived until we left her care. The trips to Pompeii and Herculaneum defy description. Claudio led us through the ruins filling us up with information that made the people and places come alive. The Amalfi Coast is the most beautiful area. No wonder we all left wanting to come back to Sorrento. This was a magical trip.

Rave reviews for Jan Gilbert, Group Leader. This is an A+ program that is well-organized with varied programs, a balanced pace, stimulating lectures, breath-taking scenery, fascinating site visits, good food, and the company of new friends.

We wish there were six stars. Jan and Claudio would then receive a six plus. This was our first Road Scholar trip and there will be many more. We particularly liked the policy for the guides not to take us souvenir shopping. We were there to learn, and learn we did. A special thanks to our leader, Jan, and guide, Claudio. We know from previous professional experience that if things run smoothly on the surface it is only because of a lot of hard workbehind the scenes. Lewis ans Jean Ford, Niagara on the Lake, Canada

The Amalfi Coast and Sorrento tour is a truly informative and delightful experience. I had always wanted to see Pompeii and Vesuvius (and now Herculaneum) and was not a bit disappointed in any of those. Staying at Sorrento for most of the tour was also very nice, avoiding all the packing and unpacking of changing hotels. It was also extremely interesting to learn so much about the history, culture and politics of Italy.

First time on an adult road scholar tour and learned so much more than I could have on my own, this tour in particular was a delight made more so by Jan our very capable tour guide and all the other guides and lecturers who made the program come alive. Will definitely be planning more Road Scholar Tours in future.

Overall a scenic, educational, enjoyable experience. Be prepared to walk a lot - up and down hills, up and down stairs, and over rough pavement. The hotels served meat and fish: other meals out were salad, pasta, dessert. Lots of free time and Jan provided a list of activities one could pursue. You will have time to shop for ceramics, linens, and inlaid wood, or you can visit a nearby attraction - or you can take some books along. You will want extra Euros. Four meals on your own in Sorrento, one in Minori. The Greek and Roman ruins were especially interesting and made more so by our guide, Claudio. His knowledge and passion for Italy were a huge asset. Our group numbered 26 (could have been 35) so hearing his explanations would not have been possible without the use of individual radios. We were blessed with good weather, a congenial group, and Jan and Claudio.

Peter from Brooklyn, NY Number of programs attended: 7

Great - and then some! - trip, but had the principal local resource (guide, teacher, etc.), Claudio, not been front and center, that likely would have changed dramatically. But basically, this is a fascinating part of the world and we had perfect weather, a wonderful group and an excellent trip!
