ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

My Hat"s off to Zhao Bin, our guide, and those who supported him through the two weeks, Road Scholar, and the Chinese people (past and present) for Rocking my World! I'm in absolute awe of what has come before and is in progress today in China. All this and the word "freedom" was never uttered or conveyed as a important individual agenda during our conversations. Harmony and Central Control (CCP) carry the day.

We could not have had a better guide than Zhao Bin for our tour. There was nothing that he wouldn't do for us, find out for us, or help us with. This was a busy tour, with very little down time-but then China is a big country. You need to experience a trip there to even begin to start to understand what China is like today. As always, Road Scholar means that you are learning as you travel-we had exposure to art, history and music in such pleasant ways! A trip to remember!

Zhao Bin was a fantastic tour guide, very caring and extremely informative. The program was great and served as an insight to all aspects of China. The only thing that i would eliminate was the trip to the dam . For some reason we did not stay on the cruise ship till after lunch as per the itinerary but left early and visited the dam in the for then took a bullet train and then a flight to shanghai, which proved to be a travel day and not in keeping with the rest of the trip. I would highly recommend Road Scholar. Barbara Martorello Orange village, Ohio

I highly recommend this tour if you want to see China. We had a wonderful time and could never have experienced so much any other way. Every day was so full of many wonderful experiences. So much variety. People on the tour were all warm and friendly and our tour guide was tremendously competent, knowledgeable and entertaining. A totally delightful experience! Thinking about where to go next with Roads Scholar. They rally know how to do it!!

Excellent trip with engaging co-travelers and an experienced, resourceful tour leader. Pack light and wash drip-dry clothes in your room. Throw in a duffle in case gifts exceed luggage space.

The trip was excellent. We traveled from April 5-20, 2014 and enjoyed just about everything about it. Our guide, Wentao, went way above the call of duty to make sure that each individual's needs were satisfied. Two things to keep in mind: If you are taking this trip because it offers a gluten-free option, don't. I know this from experience. Road Scholar's Chinese gluten-free option is simply an exercise in frustration. Secondly, we did not get our flight information until we were boarding the plane. No chance to tell family what flight we were on, and no opportunity to register our frequent flier numbers in order to claim points. I tried to discuss these things with Road Scholar upon returning, but no one answered my emails or returned my phone calls. But I thoroughly enjoyed the trip! And lost weight!

We could not have been more pleased with our tour. It was well-planned, and there were no delays or problems at all. Our guide, Wentau, was a delight and an excellent guide. He made the tour especially good. We will recommend this tour to anyone.

If you enjoy history, China is definitely the place to go! China is so rich in cultural heritage and totally different from the USA, South America and Europe. There is a vast beauty about China: from outstanding natural scenery, intricately detailed and colorful architecture, to attractive landscaping everywhere, with carefully trained and well-pruned trees, vast green areas in all the cities and along the highways, and very clean. The food is very diverse and delicious, and you have plenty of opportunity to interact with the locals to personally learn about China. It's the chance of a lifetime.

I want to ditto what Steve said about our trip. I think the only negative was the air conditioning. The planes were great. The guides were great! The learning experience fantastic! I highly recommend this trip to everybody. I just loved it! This was my first visit to China and I enjoyed it more than a 10 day bus trip tour to a few countries in Europe.

This was our first experience with Road Scholar. Our guide Wentao was great- knowledgeable, well-spoken, friendly, patient, funny . We learned a lot about China. A lot of travel days but well worth it. You get to see a wide selection of country and city-life in China. Had the opportunity during free time to visit a silk manufacturing company in Shanghai. Saw major sites including Terracotta warriors, Great Wall, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven. Very informative lecture from Prof. Yang at the university in Xi'an. The Shanghai acrobat show was spectacular. Meals are mostly family-style on a lazy Susan and generally good and plentiful. The flights within China were mostly on time and on full-size jets (most were Airbus 320). The Chinese people are friendly and very eager to meet foreigners. Unfortunately, some of the hotels did not turn on their A/C units in early April. Nevertheless, highly recommend this tour.

This tour offers active travelers an opportunity to see the five most popular China destinations in only 16 days. Four domestic China flights are included. These were on full size jets, Boeing 737 or Airbus 320/321, each with adequate OH bin space Our five hotels were all first class. Our cruise ship was showing some wear, but the cabins were spacious and the food was good. Our guide, Shi Wentao, was outstanding. Knowledgeable, sincere, unlimited patience, a subtle sense of humor. In addition to the obvious world class attractions shown in the itinerary, I particularly enjoyed the following: 1. Xi'an university lecture and student walking tour. 2. Solo walk of of market streets in Xi'an old quarter. 3. Yangshuo farm house visit. 4. Visit to a "relocated farmer" along the Yangtze plus a tour of the nearby town market. My compliments also to the Chinese people on their friendliness.

This is a well-planned combination of iconic sites (Xi'an terracotta soldiers, Forbidden City, hutongs), museums (Shanghai history/art, Xi'an archaeology), people-watching (Temple of Heaven park, Tienanmen Square), geology (Li River), and cultural and economic transformation (Yangtze cruise). We experienced the usual Road Scholar characteristics of high information lectures and bus discussions, above-average accommodations, compatible companions, typical food, and a busy schedule. Be ready for the necessary in-country air travel. Things we enjoyed more than we expected to included the Beijing Opera evening and the days on the boat. Our guide, John (Mr. Zhang), was the best we have had on all our international trips; we'll never think about silkworms the same way!

Another fabulous road scholar trip. Our guide was great. The professor in Xian was fantastic. Loved the meal in the Hutong. The ricks shaw ride was fun. As was the visit to the farm in southern China. Love those travels into real Chinese life.

The Icons of China trip in Ap/May 2013 was one I'll remember forever! The accommodations, itinerary and variety of activities created an experience that surpassed many of my other international travel adventures. I learned so much about China...history, art, geography, culture, lifestyles and personal stories came together in a way that created a broad understanding of this place. I came away with a much deeper appreciation for the culture and expression of the parts of China we experienced, along with a strong interest in learning more and watching China change over the coming years. Our guide, Mr. Liu, was absolutely professional, enthusiastic and unflagging in his energy and enthusisasm for making our trip the best it could possibly be. I highly recommend this trip, and look forward to my next Road Scholar adventure.

I have wanted to go to China all my life since I read a slim book about a young girl who sacrificed her life building the Great Wall… very romantic and sad for a young reader. Also there was Pearl Buck's, "The Good Earth," which I read several times. My trip showed the new China, not the old repressive China, a country of bustling, cosmopolitan, forward-looking cities. The people I met were friendly, and the new buildings architecturally beautiful. We saw many of the old sites China is famous for: the Great Wall, and the Forbidden City, as well as the 3 Gorges dam, pandas, Tianenmen Square, a ride in a sampan and a cruise on the Yangtze. Our tour group was only 9 people; we are grateful that Road Scholar chose not to cancel the tour, but let us go ahead with it. It was a whirlwind tour: 4 plane rides, 6 hotels and the most fantastic, funny, caring, well-informed guide."

Without a doubt this trip/experience was a life changing event. We on;y think we know or understand other cultures. Thank you Mr. Liu and thank you Road Scholars for opening my eyes and mind to a totally different experience. There are no words to express how thankful I am to both of you.

Julia from Palo Alto, CA Date attended: 4-20-13 to 5-5-13 Number of programs attended: 3 This memorable trip was simply wonderful. I learned so much about Chinese history and the fascinating people. Walking on the Great Wall and seeing the Terra Cotta Warriors was a thrill. The scenery viewed from the boat trip in the Three Gorges Dam area was breathtaking. Our guide, Mr. Liu, took such good care of us and is a really great resource, and a very nice man.

This wonderful trip changed my prospective of China. Hitting all the best highlights of China it was the perfect length of time. So many activities, it is a great value for the cost. Mr Lui, our tour guide, could not have been more caring or knowledgable. If you are ready for cultural differences, great Chinese food, and seeing world wonders, this is the trip for you
