The Icons of China trip in Ap/May 2013 was one I'll remember forever! The accommodations, itinerary and variety of activities created an experience that surpassed many of my other international travel adventures. I learned so much about China...history, art, geography, culture, lifestyles and personal stories came together in a way that created a broad understanding of this place. I came away with a much deeper appreciation for the culture and expression of the parts of China we experienced, along with a strong interest in learning more and watching China change over the coming years. Our guide, Mr. Liu, was absolutely professional, enthusiastic and unflagging in his energy and enthusisasm for making our trip the best it could possibly be. I highly recommend this trip, and look forward to my next Road Scholar adventure.

I have wanted to go to China all my life since I read a slim book about a young girl who sacrificed her life building the Great Wall… very romantic and sad for a young reader. Also there was Pearl Buck's, "The Good Earth," which I read several times. My trip showed the new China, not the old repressive China, a country of bustling, cosmopolitan, forward-looking cities. The people I met were friendly, and the new buildings architecturally beautiful. We saw many of the old sites China is famous for: the Great Wall, and the Forbidden City, as well as the 3 Gorges dam, pandas, Tianenmen Square, a ride in a sampan and a cruise on the Yangtze. Our tour group was only 9 people; we are grateful that Road Scholar chose not to cancel the tour, but let us go ahead with it. It was a whirlwind tour: 4 plane rides, 6 hotels and the most fantastic, funny, caring, well-informed guide."

Without a doubt this trip/experience was a life changing event. We on;y think we know or understand other cultures. Thank you Mr. Liu and thank you Road Scholars for opening my eyes and mind to a totally different experience. There are no words to express how thankful I am to both of you.

Julia from Palo Alto, CA Date attended: 4-20-13 to 5-5-13 Number of programs attended: 3 This memorable trip was simply wonderful. I learned so much about Chinese history and the fascinating people. Walking on the Great Wall and seeing the Terra Cotta Warriors was a thrill. The scenery viewed from the boat trip in the Three Gorges Dam area was breathtaking. Our guide, Mr. Liu, took such good care of us and is a really great resource, and a very nice man.

This wonderful trip changed my prospective of China. Hitting all the best highlights of China it was the perfect length of time. So many activities, it is a great value for the cost. Mr Lui, our tour guide, could not have been more caring or knowledgable. If you are ready for cultural differences, great Chinese food, and seeing world wonders, this is the trip for you

The best part of the trip was our visit to Shanghai! Both the National Guide and Local Guide did an amazing job explaining the history and development of the city. The visit to the Shanghai Museum, the Acrobatic show, and the garden were great! However, we did not spend enough time to experience the tempo and flavor of the city.

A delightful experience. A true addition to anyone's "bucket list". The sights you see, things you get to experience; walk on the Great Wall, see the Forbidden City and Tinn Sq., the Terra Cotta Warriors, Cruise the Yantze River and the Three Gorges, you are experiencing the history of a country that precedes the founding of the US. A great value, I highly recommend this adventure.

Completely over-the-top experience. From sight-seeing, to lectures, to every day lives of people, to all the famous sights you've ever wanted to see, to demonstrations of Chinese art and music, to hands-on, try-it-yourself experiences, this trip was everything I'd hoped for and more.

If you have ever wondered at China's Great Wall or the Terra Cotta Warriors, if you love learning about all the diversity of a country, if you want a cultural taste of art, music, dance and spectacle...you MUST take this tour offered by Road Scholar. And if you have a choice, ask for Hu Lin as your guide. The whole experience was sensational!!!

I enjoyed this trip a great deal. I wish the weather had cooperated a bit more. The walk on the Great Wall was much anticipated, but the fog/drizzle so deep you could not see the "vistas." We got bumped from our hotel in Xian and spent 2 days in a dilapidated business hotel. It reeked of cigarette smoke, had mold on the ceilings and mildew everywhere. Just awful! Yet, the Terra Cotta warriors left me breathless.
We got flooded out on the first day on the Yangtze--were captive on the boat--a bummer. The sun finally came out and we had 2 terrific days cruising. I was very taken with Shanghai. The architecture is stunning. The Shanghai acrobat performances awesome. Our tour leader was personable, spoke excellent English and was very witty. He made the trip special.
