This was a superb journey led by a very competent tour guide. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I learned a a lot not only about imperial China, but thanks to home visits also a lot about contemporary life in China.

A wide variety of sites conducted by superb guides. Travel arrangements, food, hotels and seeing the sites were wonderful! A nice variety of home visits, visits to schools, plus all the highlights (Great Wall, Terra Cotta Warriors, etc.) I can't even find anything to complain about!! Our fellow travelers were also a delight to be with. You can't go wrong with this trip. If you are not comfortable with stairs or walking, it might not be the trip for you, however.

This trip was an emersion course in China with visits ranging from huge cities to small streets of ordinary people in their market place. With overnights in five cities, variety of transportation modes, and visits to two others and a river cruise all packed into 20 days, it has taken us awhile to process all of the extraordinary sights, sounds, and experiences we had. Mr. Liu, our main guide, was excellent in his knowledge, attention to details and sincere concern for our group, all punctuated with what he called “Chinese humor” (read “deadpan”). He made sure to accommodate all of our needs even buying cough medicine and helping in anyway needed. He was assisted by excellent guides in each of the cities and the program enriched by lectures by University teachers and school and home visits. Our 18 co-travelers (perfect small group size) were a great and congenial group of people whom we enjoyed getting to know. This is our second Road Scholar trip and the program once again proved to be well designed, interesting, and presented us with unusual opportunities to experience both the culture and sights of China.

This program to China and Tibet was outstanding made even better by the very experienced, thoughtful, knowledgable, fun guidance of Hao Liu. There was much travel to coordinate for 20 travelers...4 in country flights, the train, buses and the boat .....but it was done perfectly. This trip gave me a new perspective and greater insight into the life, the traditions, and the Chinese people. From the masses of people and forests of tall condominiums in Beijing to the picnic in a meadow in the Himalayas..... It was a truly a wonderful trip of a life time.

A very comprehensive program considering this extensive country and its diverse culture. Mr. Hao Liu was a very professional guide who made it possible not only to enjoy the program but to get inside some of the main cultural differences between Chinese culture and our culture. The daily activities keep your attention and interest always at its peak. We recommend this program for people interested in understanding China's role in the present globalisation and changes taking place in society both in China and the world.

This program was so comprehensive in activities and educational focus that I would give it a perfect score of 5 stars! Each day was jam-packed with new experiences to enjoy and sights to see. Our guide, Mei Mei, was a true delight! One of the best trips I have taken with Road Scholar.

This is a great program. Hao Lui is a great leader. I usually travel independently with my family and husband. I do not believe that we could have done this great of a trip by ourselves. We had the opportunity to meet the people, visit schools and homes,as well as getting to see and be guided through all the great sights.Road Scholar lined up great experiences, speakers, activities and so on. I didn't know any of the people we would be traveling with, but they were all great and as excited about learning and experiencing China as I was. Again, we had a fabulous group leader who by the way was a "foodie" and I think he must have done cooking classes or Taste of China or something because I loved all the places he took us to eat and tried all kinds of new food. I never once had to break into my breakfast bars or peanut butter that I brought along.Thankyou for that Mr. Lui! The time flew and our trip was over too soon! I loved this trip and it was more than I expected.

It was a great trip..a small taste of China from many areas. We had a great group with many laughs. Our guide Wentao was wonderful, he handled many problems with grace and humor. If we wanted to do something that was not on our schedule, he would help with directions and information. It was an amazing trip and worth every packing and unpacking.

What an outstanding program, even more enjoyable and informative than we ever imagined. Our guide, Liu Hao, is a very special person, so communicative, competent, funny. Our fellow travelers felt like family by the time we parted. We were so pleased to learn about and meet people from all walks of Chinese life and so many geographical areas. This was our 3rd Road Scholar trip and the most memorable. Penny from Conroe, Texas

The cultural experience afforded by this trip has provided the basis for a new understanding of the Chinese and their needs. The opportunities to visit and interact with local people afforded by this program make it truly unique and an experience not available in other tours of China.

Rick and I had high expectations because our friends Andy and Ed had raved about Mr.Lui and the outstanding trip of a lifetime they had experienced under his guidance. We were not disappointed. We were able to see all the highlights of China's anitquity and the modern transformation. Many many thanks to Liu Hao for making this an epic unforgettable journey of a lifetime.

This outstanding trip featured both the historic and the modern China and allowed me to see firsthand how China has changed in the 35 years since I had visited the country. A full and exciting itinerary, outstanding accommodations and meals, and a truly excellent group leader in the person of Mr. Liu Hao made this a totally successful program.

I can not stop thinking about the experiences & comparing my everyday life with what I saw. I feel enriched by what I saw & people I interacted with, not only the guide but also some of my fellow travelers. Thank you I especially feel fortunate in having the many added side trips our guide added that contributed to my understanding and allowed a fuller experience. That he would give so much of himself and his own time was very much appreciated & did not go unnoticed

Highlights and Insights - The Road Scholar Itinerary for Tibet and China was so well thought out and planned, that I believe we had the most complete cultural, historical, and personal experience of each country it is possible to have in the three weeks we were there. Variety, balance and an exceptional National Guide were the keys to an unforgettable experience.
Our guide Liu Hao kept all 24 of us informed, comfortable, and safe. His efficient, energetic, personable manner is exactly what we needed in a Guide. He was knowledgeable and entertaining in his explanations. He was directive in order to keep us moving and on time. He negotiated amenities at restaurants and hotels that are peculiar to westerners, which raised our comfort level. He even helped us with merchants and vendors by translating and bargaining. We trusted him and felt we could enjoy each experience without worry. Obviously Road Scholar hires the best. Thank you!

This trip by far exceeded our expectations. One major reason would be our interaction with local residents in a variety of communities made possible by our wonderful national guide, Liu Hao. His recommendations for how to use our free time maximized our trip. His knowledge of his country and the needs of tourists is exceptional. Thank you Mr. Liu for providing us a treasured memory.

IF I had to describe this trip in one word it would be "astounding." That's how China presented itself to me as I saw it with and through the eyes of our extraordinary guide, Liu Hoa, the outstanding companions in our group and the well thought-out itinerary. Mr. Liu brought China to life by introducing us to local markets, neighborhoods and the habits of ordinary people. He shared his personal stories providing unique insight into the life and culture of this country. The time in Tibet was one highlight among many. Mr. Liu's sensitive guidance combined with his constant good humor made this trip indeed memorable.

This was an amazingly wonderful trip. Our splendid guide, Liu Hao, was knowledgeable, thoughtful, sensitive and efficient. He shared his knowledge and love of his country very well. We visited the great monuments and historic places in China: the terra cotta warriors and Tibet were my favorite places. Also, we were able to meet people and observe aspects of everyday life: visiting the nomad home in tibet and the relocated family along the Yangtze Mr. Liu worked very hard to see that our experiences were positive and full of information. He put so much effort into every visit and was there to help at each step of the trip. His sense of humor and caring made each day a pleasure.

This was a trip we have dreamed about. Liu Hao made it a very lasting experience. We will always remember how well he treated everyone in our group as well as those vendors in the market areas when we asked questions of them. We will always have fond memories of this trip because of Liu Hao and how he treated us.

What a great opportunity to see firsthand the vastness of China - its antiquities, its modernity and the tremendous expanse of its many large urban areas. This trip provides exposure to a broad cross section of communities, its diverse cultures and the challenges of a rapidly developing modern society. Go and see it for yourself!

Mark from Potsdam, NY Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 08/30/12 - 09/19/12
This was a wonderful trip. Our splendid guide, Hui, was knowledgeable, thoughtful, sensitive and efficient. The itinerary was well chosen to enable us to see the great monuments and also to observe some aspects of everyday life. We strolled through markets, ate in village homes , visited classrooms, practiced tai chi and met nomads; circumstances were surely carefully controlled, but it is possible to note the contexts and to read-between-the-lines. There was great variety on this trip, and Cynthia and I came away with a sense that we had learned important things about Chinese civilization and contemporary China. Our fellow “scholars” were a lively mix of personalities who had in common a depth of experience, curiosity and affability. Arrangements appeared seamless. Local guides and presenters were knowledgeable and responsive. Accommodations were comfortable. Mark & Cynthia Coleman
