If you are a beginner, but perhaps have had a few basic courses in North America, i.e. Spanish 101, you will find the Roads Scholar - CRLA Spanish Learning Program brilliant. Great teacher(s), lots of practical activities and loads of fun. Having fun builds your confidence and helps you to learn and speak a little Spanish. Bravo Señor Pero.

This was a very informative and interesting program. I would recommend it to anyone who would like to learn or improve your Spanish language and also see and experience a beautiful and diversified country. I hope to return to Costa Rica very soon.

This program is thoroughly enjoyable and your Spanish will definitely improve. The instruction is very comprehensive. Be prepared for homework and a textbook to structure your time. Costa Rica is full of fascinating places to visit and marvelous birds and frogs. I just loved the program.

A wonderfully diverse program in which we improved our Spanish language skills and saw more of this beautiful country. (This was our second trip to CR.) We made friends with whom we will keep in touch, and will continue our language instruction back home. The school (CRLA) and the instructors for this program were very supportive and created a welcoming environment. We highly recommend.

The program lived up to expectations, and went beyond. Pura Vida! The trip was run very smoothly and comfortably. Whether we were there to learn the basics, or remember, or add to, what we knew, or simply get more comfortable speaking spanish, this program made it fun. In addition to the fine classes, there were plenty of opportunities for us all to practice spanish outside of class - with each other, the instructors, the staff, on the bus, on restaurant outings, learning songs for Karaoke night, in stores, and on a very special occasion- our well-planned visit to local families where we had the chance to chat and ooh and ahh in spanish over the home-cooked meal we were served. I commend our organized and gracious guide, our lively and excellent CRLA instructors, our skilled bus driver. Having the instructors with us on the road and at delightful Arenal and lush Selva Verde greatly enlivened and enriched the program. Even the rain cooperated - it only cut short one forest walk, but even then, it was good to see it in the rain that makes it what it is.

This trip is the perfect combination of language learning and sightseeing. Very good instruction and very well organized. Food and lodging at Arenal Volcano and Sarapiqui were also quite good. All three of the language instructors were excellent. Allan, the beginner's teacher, taught us a lot, helped to form a cohesive group, and was very encouraging.I liked everything about the program. I liked the lecture on volcanoes, the one on the Selva Verde and the Biological Corridor Project, the meal with a family, meeting residents in Puerto Viejo, and, of course, the language instruction. I liked that the instructors went with us to grocery stores and at bus stops on the coach trips helped us learn about new foods. I also really liked all the fresh fruit and juices we had. The locations outside of San Jose were also unbelievable beautiful.

This program is a gem due in large part to personality, kindness, giving nature of the instructors who are delightful. They were encouraging throughout. As a result I left the program with far more confidence in my Spanish speaking ability than I came in with. Bravo to the Costa Rican Language Academy...Pura Vida!

Number of Programs attended: 1 Date attended: 01/09/2013 - 01/20/2013 I loved everything about this program - the professors, the engaging & creative Spanish classes, the sightseeing, the music & kareoke, the other participants, the hotels, the food, and just the right amount of free time. I even could have handled a little more homework. I am now taking a Spanish review course at a local university. Because I was in Costa Rico when the course began, I missed the first 2 weeks of class. When I entered the class for the first time, they were having a quiz. I agreed to take it & got a 94%!!! They were also doing oral presentations & I was able to do just fine, and with much more fluency that I had before going to Costa Rico. Thank you Gabriel & the staff at the CRLA!!! I was not sure what to expect when I arrived at the Costa Rica Learning Academy. But I know now. The immersion is tempered with English so you never feel overwhelmed as you learn. I enjoyed the school in San Jose. The teachers are knowledgable, dedicated, and gear the program to the needs of the individual. At the school the learning was more intense and focused. That is where I excelled and became more confident to challenge myself. For me, I could have done the entire program there, with afternoon excursions to different museums etc. But then i never would have experienced the diversity that is Costa Rica. This is where the Road Scholar guide is so important. A difficult job that flowed smoothly because of his expertise. Since the teachers travel with you, the learning continues in a variety of ways. And yes, I sang karaoke in Spanish! How can you not enjoy learning while watching a volcano shoot plumbs of steam or monkeys shouting in the treetops? I will take a more intense learning program, maybe at the beach one day! I learned, I played, I make friends and new "family" members. YES, kudos!

The Spanish language course in Costa Rica is an excellent instructional program for anyone interested in improving their conversational skills. I found that the 10 day intensive curriculum helped me immensely. Mixing the instruction with touring opportunities in Costa Rica was really enjoyable. The teachers are experienced, energetic, and committed. The only real downside to the course is that the first four days are at the school's facility in San Jose. It's a nice facility and they fed us well besides, but spending 4 days in San Jose is sort of a waste of time when there are so many other more interesting places to visit in Costa Rica. I recommend moving the first 4 days to some other site with natural attractions.
