ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

If you are interested in literature and beautiful scenery this program is for you. The leaders are delightful and very knowledgeable.

Date attended: 05/12/14 - 05/25/14
This was a terrific program. Both of our guides were knowledgeable about the areas and their history, and gave thorough explanations. The scenery is beautiful and the food was excellent. Great value for the money.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful combination of spectacular landscape, history and literature. Our guides Peter and Jim were wonderful, helpful, informative, funny, and intrepid drivers on one-lane switchbacks up and down fells and valleys. Delicious food and great accommodations. Sheep! Red squirrels! Worth every penny.

The drivers and tour directors on our small bus were a delight, very thoughtful, patient, and knowledgeable. With the small group, we got to know each one and enjoyed their company.

I have traveled extensively with Road Scholar ....this was my 23rd trip with them...so obviously I've been very pleased with my experiences. But this was one of the very few times I feel compelled to make a negative comment. The Lake District and Northumberland are beautiful parts of England and it was a pleasure to see them when just about every flower, tree, and bush was in full bloom (and we had practically no rain). But.....the condition of the hotel in Otterburn was completely unacceptable. The rooms were dirty, the linens were worn and threadbare, the paint was chipped, the wallpaper peeling. There was little or no daily maid service. We were there for 5 nights...too long a stay in a place like that. Also....we had some very looong days on the bus....most of us felt they could have been cut down a bit and it would have been nice to be able to do a bit more walking.

I wish to echo the sentiments of the previous reviewers: this was a wonderful tour organized by a top-notch company (Mountain Goat) and led by a guide who was very personable, knowledgeable, flexible and fun to be with. There was so much variety in the schedule and some very special private visits, all adding to an enjoyable time in spite of much rainier weather than we would have chosen.

Martha from Concord, NH Number of programs attended: 1

This was my first trip with Road Scholar, my first with any formal tour organization. I now have new friends, a new outlook on the world, and my only regret is that it had to end. As our tour guide said, "You are not tourists, you are guests", and we felt that way every moment of this magical trip.
