Suggestions for 2016 programs based on our Sept 2015 trip. As to when to go..."anytime" the program is given. There is no rainy season in Switzerland. Bring rain gear even if the sky is clear when you leave the hotel.Bring a small flashlight for those uneven steps in some of the hotel rooms/toilet areas this will help to would prevent surprises in the dark.Bring several two prong adaptor plugs.Since some maybe "left behind". Set your camera to the time & date in Zurich. Take your first photo of the trip booklet since it has the name & date of your tour. Photograph the name of towns; since you are traveling by train the name is in the RR station upon arrival.Bring more memory cards then you think you will need and extra batteries (charge them before leaving home)and keep them in your pocket.Take a large zip lock to protect your camera in rain.Travel light and have fun. It was an amazing well organized trip.

Our group leader Andrea taught us the cautionary Swiss saying: "Don't praise the day until the evening." Well, now it is evening and we can say without reservation that this program deserves the highest praise. All of the many complex train connections were made without a hitch and the trains were fun, clean and prompt. Our fellow travelers were delightful. The weather (except on two occasions) miraculously cleared just as we set out on our daily adventures, and we ended up enjoying many sunny and gorgeous days. The Swiss countryside and villages were charming, and the Alps were simply breathtaking. (By the way, we learned that the world 'alp' does not mean 'mountain'. Take this tour to find out what it does mean!)

The train rides were superb. There was a good mixture of destinations and activities. The leadership was outstanding and very well organized. Switzerland is a country to be admired and enjoyed. I loved the trip.

This program is outstanding. The design is elaborate and wonderful. The quality of execution, considering the almost staggering amount of logistics involved, borders on the surreal. Clearly, much thought has been given to every aspect of this program, with the result being a very satisfying, rewarding and fun experience for participants. "Simple Is as Smart Does", as the saying goes. Our leader, Andrea, along with assistants Ursula and Karen, made everything seem easy, but this can only be because of their hard work day after day, minute by minute. They were also personable and helpful. The value proposition of this program is high, as is Swiss efficiency, everywhere on display: 34 train rides, 15 bus rides, 2 boat rides, 13 cantons visited, but never rushed. In fact, Andrea often said, "We have plenty of time, no need to rush." The words can't convey the charming manner in which they were spoken, as participants on the September 6 -- 21, 2015 will surely agree. The food throughout was excellent.

The program "Splendors of Switzerland By Rail" was one of the best and well organized programs I have ever attended. The leaders were outstanding, the educational program excellent and the beauty of the country absolutely fantastic. Monique Guenin

This trip was beyond a dream for me with all of the diversified beauty and knowledge which we were exposed to in this amazing program. Our three leaders: Esther, Ursula, and Karen were exceptional in their abilities and guidance. The group worked as one to make things happen and were all extremely cooperative and considerate. The activity level rating is accurate.

If you are a fanatical rail enthusiast as we are, know that not all the excursions involve riding the rails. The trips that are not rail oriented are effectively added to the total program with historical and cultural content. Although we wanted more rail time (that's just our nature) we found the whole program well planned, dynamically organized, efficiently managed, and surprisingly diverse. It is a great way to see Switzerland. A rewarding experience.

A well-balanced trip with exceptional train experiences through beautiful Swiss mountains and villages, tours of castles, museums, and a cheese farm with local guides, excellent lodging and meals including Swiss specialties. We'd give five stars to both Swiss leader/lecturer Esther Gloor and assistant Barbara Meyer, Minneapolis, for their work to make a memorable trip for all participants. An outstanding program with excellent leadership. What a fun way to see so much of Switzerland! The day trips were more than anticipated and we truly saw and experienced so much. We were fortunate to have excellent weather. Thanks to all who made this a memorable trip.

This is a most outstanding program. Our leaders were excellent and the program encompassed more than I ever expected about Switzerland, its unique history, culture, geography and political development. The country is exquisitely beautiful and the train experiences were amazing.

For my first Road Scholar Program this was a real winner. The experience was even better than I had expected. The organization and knowledge of our two guides helped to make the scenery and events even more interesting and meaningful. The days were jam packed with beautiful scenery, fantastic train rides, wonderful food, and knowledgeable guest lecturers. I can highly recommend this trip.

Switzerland by Rail was a joy. Our leaders were personable and saw to our every need in a timely fashion. The program was physically challenging but not impossible and our leaders made sure that everyone was accommodated. The programs were interesting and informative. Changing trains was not only fun, but when we had luggage it was very manageable. It was a great trip for us.

This is the second time I took this program in two years. As was true the first time, the program design and execution were flawless. The leader and support staff are among the best I have ever experienced. We visited 13 of the 26 Cantons. Enjoyed traditional Swiss, French, German and Italian food. Transportation included 31 train rides including cog wheel and narrow gauge, several buses and 2 lake boat cruises. The photo opportunities are endless. Great value. No regrets.

Switzerland is a very small country with four distinct languages and cultures. We experienced the country not in an insulated tour bus, but traveled as the Swiss do by public transportation. The scenery was breathtaking. The trains and buses leave when the second hand reaches the twelve. The food is wonderful and you can drink from the fountains in the public squares. The hotels were spotless and centrally located with views of mountains or lakes. If you read carefully all the information and understand the trip is designated for "hardly explorers who enjoy a physical challenge" then this is a most wonderful trip. Switzerland is a very expensive country. Let RS do all the logistics and get the reward of really getting to know the country. It is an extraordinary value for your money.

A wonderful program but very challenging getting on and off steep train steps, being on time is a must, Swiss people really keep to time, up to the minute keeping a very tight schedule. Being prepared to haul you own bags on and off trains is not easy especially when connections are tight. Also important that if you have any physical disability, walk with a stick, not agile in getting up and down steps this is not a trip for you. thanks to the program leaders my husband was helped in keeping the schedule.

This Program exceeded my expectations in every way. I highly recommend it. Considering the high cost of living in Switzerland, this Tour is a bargain.

We have been on several bike trips with Road Scholar so this program was a departure for us but we were pleasantly surprised and very pleased with the program. Beautiful scenery and very knowledgeable guides along with the wonderful trains of Swizerland made this a first class trip.

One of the best programs we have been on. Thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie, efficient transportation system, amazingly enthusiastic guides, excellent food and centrally located hotels. Highly recommend it.

This is a terrific itinerary, but pay attention to the Moderately Challenging activity level. There is lots of walking, many steps, uncountable hills and cobblestones and some 4-minute train connections with luggage unloading and reloading. That said, bring your smallest, lightest suitcase with a minimal wardrobe and enjoy a travel experience that you will long remember. The Road Scholar guides were the world's best, the hotels delightful, the views spectacular, the lectures well-prepared and delivered by experts. If Switzerland is on your bucket list (and it should be), book this trip now.

Switzerland by Rail was a wonderful opportunity to see my number one choice on my bucket list as well as visit the country via large cities and smaller, but beautiful stops along the railway. I was never disappointed by any of the stops we made. The hotels were very clean and quaint fitting into the life style of the area. Our food choices were regional favorites. Most importantly, the people on our tour made it fun and most memorable for me. Many thanks to our leaders who were very organized and made the tour the best!

Switzerland was more beautiful than I expected. This trip covered all aspects of the country; history, economy, geography, gastronomy, religion, and culture. Could not have been a more enjoyable experience. All this and a train lovers dream way of travel with split second accuracy. Lots of exercise to combat the cheese and chocolate indulgences. A must go!

An excellent program for train lovers and scenery enthusiasts who enjoy seeing new places and experiencing new parts of the world. My wife's two brothers and their wives had never done Road Scholar programs before; they seemed pleased with their experiences overall. We felt that this was the best of our five Road Scholar trips. Would do it again any time.

"Splendors of Switzerland by Rail" is a really good introduction to both the country and its wonderful railroad system. The scenery is wonderful, the cities are inviting, and the railroads are an example of how things should work. It is an expensive country, but the fee structure of the trip makes that manageable.

This was one of the best touring vacations I've ever been on. The Swiss countryside and cities we visited were so beautiful and awe-inspiring. The RS group leaders and assistants were great and made it hassle-free. I thoroughly enjoyed it and want to go back some day.

This is a very well organized and comprehensive trip of a very large part of Switzerland. One will come away knowing a lot about the country and having seen much of the considerable beauty of Switzerland. That said, the pace of this trip is very fast, to the point of being hectic, with a lot of rushing to make trains and buses. If rushing does not present a problem, you will enjoy this trip. If you prefer a relaxed pace, this is not a trip for you.
