Chaarleston is a beautiful city; rich in culture and history. The plantation tours were excellent and the stately homes along Church Street and East Bay were impressive. There are a large number of art galleries and museums to enjoy. It was a wonderful week!

The Mills House Hotel provided outstanding food in a decent hotel. I loved the trips out to the plantations and there were many opportunities to take great photos. The sidewalks are irregular in the old part of the city, which we explored the first day. Be very careful walking. Climbing stairways in old buildings is difficult, although we had two people with canes who managed. There was no problem in the out of town trips in getting around. The informative part of the program was never boring. Learning was enjoyable, and special interests were considered. My favorite evening event was a concert in a historical church.

A beautiful and informative trip that opened my eyes to the long history and living traditions of Charleston, a welcoming region.

Wonderful program! Being housed at Mills House right in the historical district was wonderful! Had access to this area all the time and the hotel was extremely nice to stay in for the entire week. Ruth Miller has a gift of conveying a vast store of historical knowledge about this city, culture, homes, people. The Gullah history is, also, fascinating and the speakers so very entertaining and knowledgeable, as well. I feel that this was one of the best ways to really come to understand South Carolina, Charleston itself, and the historical and cultural, political, and social aspects of this part of the South and U.S. history! Homes are wonderful to tour! Food is outstanding!

This is a wonderful city to visit. Road Scholar does an excellent job of including points of interest during the tour.

An excellent program with emphasis on the history and culture of the city. The hotel was very convenient and it was a pleasant stay. Excellent food with an emphasis on Low Country foods.

My husband and I just returned from Road Scholar's Historic Plantations and Stately Homes of Charleston and the Lowcountry and thoroughly enjoyed it. The instructors and tour guides were knowledgeable and very interesting, the two plantations were idyllic (even the alligators), the three town historic homes were lovely, the tea plantation one of a kind and enjoyable, and the three non-hotel meals were typical of Charleston and delicious. If you plan to take part in this program, be sure the accommodations are in the historic district where you can walk to many interesting places in your free time, not in the Holiday Inn Riverview Hotel which was a nice hotel but isolated.

The hotel set the stage for the whole experience. In the center of the historical district. The accomodations were very nice! Ruth Miller had a wealth of knowledge on many subjects-not just the historic side of the picture. I will especially remember the single houses with the piazza and manicured small enclosed gardens.

Ruth Miller, the Charleston historian, is an absolute wealth of information. She really made the city come alive for me. The architecture in the city is amazing and I could have spent hours just wandering. The food is great and the Mills Hotel was perfect (even free wi-fi!).
