The Oman and UAE trip was outstanding. We learned a tremendous amount about the history, economy, culture, cuisine in addition to seeing many, many worthwhile sites and cities. Many of our preconceived ideas about the Middle East were dispelled. Our group leader, Waleed Al Maligy, was the best one we have ever had out of the 40+ group tours we have taken over the years. The group size was ideal at 17 travelers. One caution: we had signed up for a departure which was canceled, as had several other travelers. While the January date worked out very well, two other departures had been canceled because of an insufficient number of people. Road Scholar should fill up one departure before adding additional dates, rather than offering several dates, then canceling them and attempting to consolidate all the travelers into one/fewer departures.

We wanted to see Dubai, but seeing just that was too little to see and too far to go, so we were delighted to find RS offered Dubai with Oman, one of the only companies to tour Americans through this area. We were enchanted with the whole trip. Dubai was all you've heard and read about, with tallest, fastest, largest everything. Oman was another side to the coin. Oil rich, but not obsessed with tallest buildings. Walid, our guide, was excellent, taking wonderful care of us. He will do anything he can to make you have a great experience and he is so knowledgeable. We never felt the least bit worried about security. Even in the smallest towns, we were warmly greeted. In both Oman and Dubai, all signs must be in both English and Arabic so it was easy to recognize stores, labels, etc. The trip was not strenuous, but was full of interesting boat rides, desert drives, and sights. We stayed an extra 3 days in Dubai and used the HOHO Big Bus to get us around. The Dubai hotel is located 1/2 a block from a pickup point and in an area with plenty of shopping. We took over 5000 photos because there was so much to see and remember: the fjords of Oman and the forest of skyscrapers in Dubai. Essentially all the meals are included and were some of the finest cuisine we have experienced. No one seemed to get sick and the flavors were awesome. You can drink the water everywhere, though plenty of bottled water is available in hotels and on the bus. The desert was experienced in fully air-conditioned, non-dusty 4x4 Toyota SUVs that showed us the dunes, camels, and lifestyle of the Bedouins. We went in January, which meant we took and wore jackets some days and short sleeves other days. Bring a flashlight for the turtle egg laying and hatching experience.

I have posted a photo of myself with our group leader Waleed at the Oryx desert camp in the Oman sand dunes, one of many exciting and unusual stops on this excellent trip. This fast-paced adventure included magnificent architecture, a dhow cruise, mountain vistas, villages, date plantations, riding the dunes, and seeing egg-laying green sea turtles. As an RS group leader for Ashland, Oregon programs centered on the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, I appreciated Waleed's knowledge of the area and its culture, and his caring flexibility in leading our group.
