If you have a passion for photography and want to go to amazing places to improve your skills, this is the program for you. Chuck, our professional photographer, and Jeff, our guide and also a photographer, are experts at what they do. I learned so much and appreciated their patience and the knowledge they each shared with us. It was a fabulous trip. I just might show up again for a round two.

This program will help just about any level of photography skill and camera from the point and shoot to the most advanced DSLR. Chuck and Jeff were very thorough and helpful with individuals. And, the locations are spectacular!

A couple of years ago, this was my very first RS program "just to see if I would like the experience" and learn about my newly acquired DSLR camera. I learned not to fear all those knobs and buttons and actually use them. Chuck Lawson, our instructor, started the program by describing the basics of using a digital camera and various techniques then immediately followed by a hands-on session in the hotel's courtyard. Jeff Strang, out coordinator was a great help as both ensured that every person received personal attention. With the basics demonstrated and practiced, we visited the Desert Botanical Gardens, Sedona and the Grand Canyon. A classroom session was held to describe post-processing of the images using tools in PhotoShop Elements (PSE); our "best" pictures were critiqued and PSE was used to "improve" the shots - very useful info. At the Grand Canyon, Chuck revealed his work flow for taking stunning landscape images which we had a chance to use during a sunset and sunrise sessions at he rim. For new photographers, this would be a great way to start to learn this piece of equipment. Best of all, my fellow RS scholars made the trip even more worthwhile.

Beautiful photo opportunities at a variety of locations, combined with excellent instruction in photography.

Glenda from North Richland Hills, TX Number of programs attended: 1

The photography trip to Phoenix, Sedona and Grand Canyon was my first Road Scholar program but not the last. I learned new ways to use my camera and improve composition to make beautiful photographs of nature's wonders.

Elizabeth from Grand Rapids, MI Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 02/22/15 - 02/27/15
I learned a lot about photography in a variety of beautiful locations. Everyone on the trip made it a very fun experience.

Jeff from Omro, WI Number of programs attended: 8
Date attended: 02/22/15 - 02/27/15
The program was very interesting. The photo locations were superb and we got some unbelievable sunset shots. The nightly photo critiques were very helpful in evaluating our work. Chuck was an excellent instructor, who truly has a passion for photography!

The program was outstanding. Whether you are a just getting into photography or are an experienced photographer, you will learn something. There is never a boring minute and you will be putting into practice what you learn on the same day. You will not find a better Group Leader than Jeff Strang nor a better photograph Instructor than Chuck Lawsen and they complement each other to make a very enjoyable learning experience for you. We had a fairly large group but I do not know of anybody that did not get the help they needed. Because of them this is truly a 5 Star Plus program.

This was an outstanding program. Chuck Lawson, our professional photography instructor, and Jeff Strang, our RS Coordinator were excellent. Our group had a large range of experience. Everyone had their questions answered in a respective, patient manner. More time would have been good in Sedona and the Grand Canyon. Members were friendly and very interesting. Food and hotels were adequate. I strongly recommend this program.

Eileen from Ann Arbor, MI Number of programs attended: 24

This is an excellent program for anyone looking to improve their photography skills, no matter your skill level or camera expertise. Our 11 participants had cameras ranging from "advanced" point and shoots, to mirrorless models, to DSLR cameras. Both professional photographer Chuck Lawsen and our RS coordinator Jeff Strang (also a very knowledgable photographer) were always encouraging, positive, and helpful as we learned to take advantage of the more advanced features of our cameras. Classroom instruction and photo critique sessions alternated with photo shoots in a variety of settings and subjects, including sunset among the saguaros, flowers at the Botanical Gardens, moving waters among the Sedona redrocks, and dramatic views of the south rim of the Grand Canyon. The lectures included an introduction to editing software, although we did not have the opportunity to actually practice these skills. The accommodations were OK, and the food included good meals in a variety of settings. As always on RS trips, our fellow participants were a friendly and positive group of interesting individuals.

Both advanced and novice photographers will learn new skills. There is considerable individual attention from both the professional, Chuck Lawsen, and the leader, who is a very skilled photographer. Chuck has outstanding people skills. I went from being a novice with a point-and-shoot camera to someone seeking a really nice camera. There is considerable value for your money if you will be satisfied with good (not great)accommodations and food. Everyone was very welcoming and no one was upset when some information was aimed at another participant. We had a relatively small group of participatants.

This is a well planned and executed photo workshop. The instructors worked with a group with a wide variety of equipment and experience, yet I don't think anybody felt they weren't getting the attention they needed at their level. Both knew how to keep it fun and interesting. One additional note. I had a small accident at the beginning of this course. Both the instructors and the other participants saw to lots of details so I was able to continue, albeit at a slower pace. Thank you, Jeff and Chuck; Thank you, fellow Road Scholars!

Wow! Extraordinary learning adventure in northern Arizona. Totally awesome! Recommend it.

Ronald from Mandeville, LA Number of programs attended: 6

The grow leader, Jeff Strang, was the best leader I have ever encountered, by dent of his extensive knowledge of geology and vegetation. A drive by him became a learning experience. Chuck Lawsen is a natural teacher, knowing how to initiate the learning process, gradually moving to the more complex and ending with summaries.

Joan from Conyers, GA Number of programs attended: 2

What an excellent way to see beautiful landscapes and learn more about photography at the same time. Jeff and Chuck led us on a well planned adventure and made sure we all received tons of advice and helpful tips. High point of the trip...sunrise at the Grand Canyon!

Sherrill from Milledgeville, GA Number of programs attended: 1

Great program...Jeff & Chuck are a terrific team. The group size (12) was perfect; consequently, we received lots of individual attention from these two pros! I left with a better understanding of how to use my DSLR and had a great time experiencing a part of our country I'd not previously seen...the southwest is magnificent!

Kathy from Buckeye, AZ Number of programs attended: 8
Date attended: 04/06/14 - 04/11/14
This was one of the best programs I have ever been on. Chuck & Jeff are wonderful educators. I learned how to shoot in manual and how to understand hyperfocal focussing. I recommend this program for beginning point and shooters and for beginning and intermediate DSLR shooters. Fantastic !!!!

Janet from Tucson, AZ Number of programs attended: 9
Date attended: 04/06/14 - 04/11/14
I did get a lot out of this program even though I wasn't that familiar with my "advance point & shoot" camera. Bring a flash drive & a way to download a photo you want critiqued. We did that twice, & I found it very helpful to see what the other folks took photos of & what comments were made about them. Be sure to bring enclosed walking shoes, for the photo shoots in the desert. Very little down time, but you could always pass up an outing if you really had to. I personally didn't want to miss one thing that we did.

Good chance to see and photograph a variety of Southwestern sites including sunsets. On sight professional photographer available to help all from the newest "point and shoot" to more experienced digital SLR users. Little emphasis on editing which could be improved.

Ronald from Jacksonville, FL Number of programs attended: 10

OUR INSTRUCTOR, CHUCK LAWSON, HAS SUCH A STRONG PASSION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY ALONG WITH HIS EXPERTISE, HELPFULNESS AND LIKEABILITY THAT ANYONE WOULD FEEL SATISFIED BEING ON ONE OF HIS TOURS. OUR COORDINATOR, JEFF STRANG, WAS CONSTANTLY LOOKING TO MAKE EVERY ASPECT OF THE TOUR BETTER. AS USUAL, WE HAD A FINE GROUP OF FELLOW PARTICIPANTS WHICH MAKES THE TOUR MORE ENJOYABLE. THIS WAS A GOOD TOUR FOR PEOPLE WANTING TO LEARN AND ENJOY THE DESSERT IN THE SOUTHWEST.

Diane from Seattle, WA Number of programs attended: 1

This was so much fun. Learned how to use and enjoy my camera. Leaders knew where to go to get fantastic photo shots of sunsets. The group dynamic added to my enjoyment of this trip, in fact we were talking about having a reunion trip, with our fantastic group leader Jeff and photo instructor Chuck.

John from Syracuse, NY Number of programs attended: 36

This was the 8th time I have taken this program and I have learned something each time. It is an excellent program.
