Road Scholar
Program #4352RJ
9 Days | 8 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Instructors

These instructors are participating on at least one day of one date of this program.
Please note that changes may occur.

Frank Helling

Frank Helling is an active adventurer and naturalist who has spent much of his life “sauntering” in the footsteps of the great mountaineer, philosopher and nature writer John Muir. He has backpacked, hiked and climbed in the Sierras, Rockies, Cascades, Alps, Alaska, Hawaii and the deserts of the American Southwest. A former high school science teacher, Frank has also worked as a ranger and naturalist in Kings Canyon National Park and as a professional wilderness instructor.

Instructors & Group Leaders

These people serve both roles during your program.

Jeff Crow

Jeff Crow is a naturalist in the tradition of John Muir. Like Muir, he has been rambling around the Sierra Nevada for decades, spending much time in its ecosystems to bring a perspective that incorporates a wide range of environments. He is also a naturalist in the old sense of the word prior to Muir – an observer of all disciplines in the natural world. He was trained in English at U.C. Santa Barbara and uses that knowledge to put his students on deep pilgrimages to exotic lands outside their back doors. Jeff has led Road Scholar programs in Sequoia National Park for a number of years, and currently works as a mentor teacher for the Yosemite Institute. He continually works with students ages 8 – 87 in a fervent desire to create connections that, like the fundamental particles, bind the fabric of the forest and the mountains into one complete whole. As Muir wrote, “the clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.”
