ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active

See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Instructors

These instructors are participating on at least one day of one date of this program.
Please note that changes may occur.

Nan Dietert

Nan Dietert is a skilled sculpturist, but she freely admits her “magnificent obsession” is birding — influenced by the remarkable variety of birds that live, winter, and migrate through the coastal bend and South Texas. Nan and husband Lyndon run a private guide service in Port Aransas, and they have offered their birding expertise on a river boat in Port Aransas during the Whooping Crane Festival, as well as on the intercoastal canal between Port Isabel and New Orleans.

Capt. Tommy Moore

Throughout his life, Captain Tommy Moore has been an avid outdoorsman who has explored the bays and estuaries of the Texas Coastal Bend since the age of 15. After giving up the corporate life in 2003, Captain Moore began piloting coastal birding explorations into the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge to see endangered Whooping Cranes. He continues to lead birding adventures around the Texas Coastal Bend where more than 400 species have been documented.

Tom Langschied

Tom Langschied is a nature excursion coordinator for the King Ranch in Kingsville, and is currently coordinating the South Texas Wintering Birds Program, a citizen-science project. In his spare time, Tom enjoys watching birds, butterflies and dragonflies.

Group Leaders

Group Leaders make sure your program runs smoothly and are attuned to the needs of Road Scholar participants. These Group Leaders are participating on at least one day of one date of this program.

Linda Fuiman

A native of Scotland, Linda Fuiman has maintained her Scottish brogue while living on the Texas Gulf Coast for more than 20 years. Through her work at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute, Linda shares the wonders of nature with students of all ages. Most recently, she has led Birding 101 courses for kids, and serves as the education chair with the Coastal Bend Audubon Society. Linda also produces “South Texas Birding,” a monthly segment featured on a local television channel.
