Ms. Shirley Spencer

Shirley Spencer has lived in the Sierra Nevadas since 1979. An educator and seasonal Ranger at Yosemite National Park since 1986, she also instructs at Sequoia, Kings Canyon, Canyonland and Arches national parks. Shirley is also a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and holds a California State Teaching Credential for secondary and middle school science. In 2009, she published her book, “Flowering Shrubs of Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada,” which includes 40 of her original watercolors and scientific descriptions of each plant. An avid hiker, backpacker, skier, kayaker, scuba diver and mountaineer, Shirley teaches rock climbing with her husband Mark. She is also an accomplished watercolor painter, vocalist, guitarist and organic farmer.

Mr. Len McKenzie

Len McKenzie has been an active birder since 1962. An employee of the National Park Service for nearly 40 years, including 19 years in Yosemite, Len has been a consultant for the NPS since 1998. He has conducted various birding surveys including the Yosemite Christmas Bird Count, and has served as president of the Mariposa Audubon Society.

Glenda Gilreath

A native Californian, Glenda Gilreath grew up in the San Joaquin Valley, but moved to the Sierra foothills in 1990. She has lived in the Caribbean and has journeyed to a number of other countries, and considers travel to be one of her favorite hobbies. Glenda can often be found with a camera in hand, taking photos of her adventures as well as creating fine art compositions. She looks forward to sharing the beauty of the Sierra Nevada on this learning adventure!

Gayle Farmer

Gayle Farmer is a native Californian who has lived in the Sierra foothills for over 10 years, having relocated from Southern California. A former quilt shop owner for more than 15 years, she continues to quilt, knit and do needlework. Gayle volunteers for the Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau, and has been a Road Scholar group leader for the past five years.
