Richard Smolens

Since retiring from Hunter College in 1991, Dick Smolens has combined his two great loves — teaching and singing — by lecturing and performing nationwide, and by introducing jazz to schoolchildren in Venice, Fla. He interprets songs that were created during the first half of the American 20th century, most notably the works of the Gershwin brothers, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and more. Based in West Grove, Pa., Dick spends the winter months singing and teaching in Georgia and Florida.

Emma Mason

With more than 20 years of experience in scouting, Emma Mason has completed numerous leadership training courses and was a leader trainer with the Girls Scouts of America. She has organized summer encampments with over 300 girls, and has served as the first woman assistant Scout Master with the Boy Scouts Council of South Florida. Emma is a Certified Florida Master Naturalist, and is a regular volunteer at Weedon Island Preserve in Pinellas County.

Carol Mae

Carol Mae has been an active member of the Longboat Key Turtle Watch and is a member of its board of directors. A native of Wisconsin, Carol heightened her interest in shells and joined the Sarasota Shell Club and the Conchologists of America. She is a member of the planning committee for the upcoming Conchologists National Convention in Sarasota.

Paula Benshoff

Paula Benshoff is a Florida native who grew up in Sarasota when the nearest woods were just down the street and the way to Myakka State Park was a dirt road. She worked as a park ranger at Myakka State Park for15 years, and then became the park naturalist in 1995 until her retirement in 2014. In 2002, she wrote the book “Myakka” about the magic of our largest state park. Now she shares her love of Florida nature with lifelong learners of all ages.
