Instructors

Please note that changes may occur.

Lynn Jakubowicz

Lynn Jakubowicz has been a birder for over 30 years, more seriously in the past decade. She holds a B.A. in education from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., and taught for several years. She has been working as a children’s librarian for the past 25 years here in Sarasota. Lynn has been the membership chair for Sarasota Audubon for the past eight years and leads day trips, and is active in conducting bird surveys of Sarasota's parks. The team she leads has completed two-year studies of Red Bug Slough, Urfer, South Lido, and Rothenbach parks. She has been a member and leader of Christmas Bird count teams for over 30 years, missing only one year during that time. Lynn is married, a mother of three grown sons and grandmother of two. Her other interests include tennis and reading.

Kathryn Young

Kathryn Young received her B.S. degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and worked for many years as a computer technology instructor for the Nortel Communications Corporation. She later became an RN and worked as a professional nurse in a variety of medical areas. Since moving to Sarasota in 2004, she has been active in leading and planning many field trips in Sarasota and across the state of Florida. She has also educated and entertained the community and Road Scholar programs with presentations on bird rookeries and Florida bird history. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Sarasota Audubon as program chair for Audubon monthly meetings.

Mr. John Ginaven

John Ginaven earned his master’s in nuclear physics at the University of Wisconsin. He is a retired teacher and naturalist who worked at several nature centers, leading birding classes and walks. John worked at Tyler Arboretum, near Philadelphia and Ashland Nature Center near Wilmington, Del. He also served on the board of the Valley Forge Audubon Society and the Sarasota Audubon Society. John has been a bird watcher for 39 years, and has searched for species along the East Coast as well as in Costa Rica, Panama, Belize, Trinidad and Australia.

Group Leaders

Group Leaders make sure your program runs smoothly and are attuned to the needs of Road Scholar participants. These Group Leaders are participating on at least one day of one date of this program.

Margaret (Peg) Matthys

Peg Matthys’ passion is service — she serves as a citizen-at-large member of Sarasota County’s Human Services Advisory council, she ushers at Sarasota’s Van Wezel Performing Arts Center and she volunteers as a precinct clerk for elections. On top of all that, she’s the President of Sarasota’s All Faiths Food Bank. It should be no surprise, then, that Peg is active with non-profits like Road Scholar. Before retiring, Peg worked in marketing for IBM and received the IBM Excellence Award for Marketing Leadership.
