Road Scholar
Program #18731RJ
15 Days | 14 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
If you’re looking for a more flexible schedule with ample independent time and several meals on your own, then our FLEX learning adventures are made for you.

Mr. Shane Connolly

A native of the Burren, Shane Connolly has a diploma in archaeology from the National University of Ireland, Galway and a diploma in local and regional studies from University College Cork. He is also qualified with a certificate in agribusiness , a degree in business studies and currently runs a cattle and sheep farm in Corkscrew Hill, Ballyvaughan. An experienced educational excursion leader in the Burren, Shane enjoys good conversation and a laugh. His interests include place names, stone wall construction and folklore.

Mr. Peadar O'Dowd

Peadar O’Dowd is a historian dedicated to sharing his love for the heritage of Galway, Ireland, with students and visitors of all ages. A native of Galway, he has lectured on the region’s treasures both in Ireland and in the U.S., and is a columnist for the Connacht Sentinel newspaper and Galway Now magazine. He is the author of several books on Galway and the west of Ireland, including “Old and New Galway,” “Down by the Claddagh,” and “Tracing Your Galway Ancestors.” Now retired from his work as a lecturer at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Peadar is a member of the Galway Archaeological and Historical Society, and is an alumnus of University College, Galway.

Deirdre Ni Chinneide

Deirdre Ni Chinneide is a singer and song-writer who specializes in Celtic singing. She has performed worldwide and sung extensively in Irish and English as a vocalist with bands such as Mo run Searc, Acabella, Ragus and more. Deirdre has also toured the Celtic festival route in Europe and the United States.

Tony O'Callaghan

Tony O’Callaghan is a native of Killybegs , Ireland’s largest fishing port. He witnessed the town’s hard times in the 1950s — when fishing was hit by a fall in demand — as well as a resurgence in the 1960s based on herring fishing. By 1969, Tony served as the fisheries correspondent with a national newspaper, and in 1989, founded the Marine Times newspaper. Since 1992, Tony has been working as a marketing and public relations consultant for many of the region’s fishing companies.

Mr. Denis Kissane

For 40 years, Denis Kissane ran a dairy farm on a small hill farm near his home town of Killarney. He retired in 2005 and has since spent his time welcoming visitors to Ireland, serving as a heritage specialist and working with elementary schoolchildren as a participant in the Heritage in Schools program. Denis truly loves his work and is never happier than when he is able to show the beauty of his native Killarney to the visitors of Ireland.
