5 Days | 4 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Easy
Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Instructors

These instructors are participating on at least one day of one date of this program.
Please note that changes may occur.

Annie Rieken

Annie Rieken’s business card should read: “Have trowel, will travel.” For nearly 20 years, her passion for historic structures has led her to record, save, understand and, on occasion, relocate these historic buildings. Annie supports her preservationist habit as a contract archeologist and architectural historian. Among her interests is Central Illinois’ Clayville Historic Site, settled on the prairie by the Broadwell family in 1891. The two-story brick building known as the Broadwell Inn served as a stagecoach stop near Springfield, Ill.

Larry Betz

A retired high school teacher and coach, Larry Betz is passionate about the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. He studied architecture at Washington University in St. Louis and serves as a docent at Dana-Thomas House, one of the best-preserved examples of Wright’s “Prairie period.” Larry’s own home, a rambling rural farmhouse, is an homage to Wright — he has bought, and in some cases even built, heavy oak furniture that reflects the “Prairie style” and he makes art and stained glass pieces characterized by Wright’s distinctive geometric forms. Larry also serves as president of the board for the Belleville Historical Society, as a director for the St. Clair County Historical Society and as director of the Arts Council of Southwestern Illinois.

Anthony Rubano

Anthony Rubano is a project designer for the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. He reviews proposed changes to historic Illinois properties and has consulted nationwide on historic preservation and downtown-design issues. Anthony has worked extensively with the Illinois Main Street program, advising nearly 70 historic Main Street communities in Illinois. His work, along with that of four colleagues, has garnered awards from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Roberta Volkman

Roberta Volkman is the author of “Susan Lawrence: The Enigma in the Wright House,” a biography of Springfield, Ill., socialite Susan Lawrence Dana. As arts educator and freelance writer, Roberta trained as an interpreter of the Dana-Thomas House in 1981 and has since volunteered there. Her other works include travel stories featuring the arts, book reviews and teacher's guides.
