Road Scholar
Program #3788RJ
11 Days | 10 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Please note that changes may occur.

James White

Dr. Jay White holds a doctorate in Canadian history from McMaster University. He currently teaches Canadian military history in Halifax for the Department of Continuing Studies at Royal Military College, Kingston. His research interests include social, nautical and military topics spanning the 18th to 20th centuries, with a focus on Atlantic Canada. Jay has published articles on Titanic "instant books," Halifax in WWII and the origins of tourism in Nova Scotia. His latest research project for the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic investigated transatlantic cables and the ships that maintain them.

Boyde Beck

Boyde Beck is a curator with the Prince Edward Island Museum and Heritage Foundation. He also has a regular history column on MainStreet, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s afternoon radio show on the Island, and is a sessional lecturer at the University of Prince Edward Island.

Napoleon Chiasson

Napoleon Chiasson has a passion for enlightening others about his beloved Cape Breton and has led walks on the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park for 14 years, offering his historical expertise to visitors. A retired educator with 29 years in the public school system, he has taught both French and English. Napoleon currently heads the cultural association in Cheticamp, a fishing camp of 4,000, a large number of whom are Acadians, on the Cabot Trail.

Shelah Allen

Shelah Allen was born and raised in the picturesque World Heritage Site of Lunenburg. A seventh-generation Tanner on her mother’s side, she has a passion for genealogy, folklore, superstitions and stories. “I’m not so much a history buff … but I do love stories, and there’s a big difference.” Shelah loves to entertain Road Scholar participants on walking explorations of her town — and on her own time, loves road trips, music and a deep interest in Cuba.
