Road Scholar
Program #8577RJ
9 Days | 8 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Instructors

These instructors are participating on at least one day of one date of this program.
Please note that changes may occur.

Dr. Sherman Thomas

A Rockefeller Foundation scholarship recipient, Dr. Sherman Thomas has degrees from the Universities of Costa Rica and University of Minnesota. In addition to teaching at the Universidad de Costa Rica for 30 years, he is one of the founders of the Renovación Costarricense political party and was selected to run for President of Costa Rica in 1998. Sherman has also been on the staff of Universidad Latina, Universidad Autonoma de Centro America, and Universidad del Turismo, and his publications can be found in chemistry journals and chemistry textbooks. He is highly regarded for his professional achievements in chemistry, as well as his social and political commitment to improve the quality of life for all citizens of his country.

Willy Pineda

A native of Costa Rica, Willy Pineda studied biology at the University of Costa Rica (UCR) and worked as an assistant in the Museum of Zoology. It was while working at the museum that Willy discovered his passion for mammalian studies. After completing his bachelor’s degree, he remained at UCR to complete a master’s degree in zoology. His graduate studies focused on the relationship of the wing morphology (size and shape) of Neotropical bats with their diet, feeding guilds, and foraging behavior. Since then, Willy has published several scientific papers, participated in research projects, consultant work and various teaching positions. Currently, he lives with his family in the verdant Caribbean Lowlands of Costa Rica, at Sarapiqui, and is working toward his Ph.D.
