Hon. Lange Schermerhorn

Lange Schermerhorn’s 35-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service has included a variety of assignments in the Department of State and as ambassador to the Republic of Djibouti. Since retiring in 2001, she has continued her interest in Africa and the affairs of the Horn, with consulting assignments in Egypt, Somaliland, and Djibouti. She participated in election observation missions in Nigeria, Somaliland and Kenya, and served as the political advisor to the commanding general of the U.S. Central Command’s Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa. Lange is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and the National War College at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Elizabeth Shelton

Elizabeth W. Shelton served as a Foreign Service Officer for nearly 30 years, with tours of duty in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Lagos, Istanbul, Adana (Turkey), and as DCM in Baku, Azerbaijan and Tirana, Albania. While serving in the department, she held positions in the International Organizations Bureau and the Economic and Business Bureau. She was the winner of the 1995 Charles E. Cobb, Jr. Award for Initiative and Success in Trade Development. Following retirement in 2005, she became a doctoral candidate at Georgetown University, and graduated with a Ph.D. in liberal studies in 2010. She recently assumed the position of Executive Director of the American Friends of Turkey.
