EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. Minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding, and rewarding, programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Mr. Colin Jordan

Colin and Kim Jordan are former dairy farmers who now jointly run a Hill Country deer Farm near the South Canterbury town of Fairlie. Colin has an agricultural science degree from Lincoln University, and Kim has a business management degree from the same university. They are both former rugby players who now coach rugby teams, which they fit in around raising their three young children. In their free time, the Jordan family enjoys hiking, skiing and hunting.

Mr. Ray Willett

Fiordland local, Ray Willett, will delight and enthuse with his tales of adventure and discovery on the Milford Track, known by many as the “finest walk in the world.” Since the 1950s, Ray has been leading adventurers along this noted path which makes its way through Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area, to Sutherland Falls, and along the Clinton River. In 2013, Ray trekked the entire length of the Milford Track in celebration of its 125th anniversary.

Group Leaders

Group Leaders make sure your program runs smoothly and are attuned to the needs of Road Scholar participants. These Group Leaders are participating on at least one day of one date of this program.

Pauline Mahoney

A retired cardiac nurse, Pauline Mahoney is the true “heart” of this learning adventure in her role as Group Leader. An avid explorer, she has trekked extensively in New Zealand with her family, and has journeyed overseas to Nepal, India, Bhutan, South America, Turkey and Switzerland. In her free time, she enjoys looking after her extensive garden in Napier, as well as practicing yoga.

Mr. Brien Mahoney

Brien Mahoney, has had a lifetime of experience in hiking and mountain climbing. He is familiar with most of the major trails and climbs in New Zealand and has taken part in expeditions to the Andes in South America and to several sections of the Himalayas, includng Nepal and Bhutan. As a board member of the Outward Bound Trust — an organization founded by the Duke of Edinburgh — Brien also works to train young people in outdoor skills.
