Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Instructors

These instructors are participating on at least one day of one date of this program.
Please note that changes may occur.

Paul Christie

Paul Christie graduated with a degree in economics at University College London, then took up Japanese graduate studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies. He first went to Japan in 1987, and lived between Tokyo and London until 2002. Paul's varied career includes working as an analyst for the Nihon Keizai Shimbun and as a freelance documentary director for Japanese television. A yearning for rural life led him to a quiet village in west Japan, where he enjoys life with his family.

Tom Stanley

As director and academic advisor of Walk Japan, Tom Stanley leads educational small-group walking adventures in rural Japan. Tom first moved to Japan in 1959 when his father, an American diplomat, was posted there, and he attended high school in Kobe. He earned a Ph.D. in Oriental Studies from the University of Arizona. In 1986, Tom joined the University of Hong Kong, where he served as head of department and associate dean until retiring in 2008.

Mr. Jack Convery

''Tea ceremony is not just my work, but my life'', says Jack Convery. A chance encounter over 20 years ago led him to Urasenke, one of Japan's leading tea ceremony schools, and he now teaches daily to Japanese and overseas visitors alike. The atmosphere at Shotoku-an, Jack's tea room, is respectful but relaxed, with none of the rigidity normally associated with aesthetic practice.

Patrick Lovell

Patrick Lovell worked while in high school for a first-generation Japanese-American, sparking his interest in Japan. On his third visit to Japan, he settled in Tokyo and it is now his adopted hometown. He has witnessed firsthand Japan’s rapid economic development, the stock market bubble, and, since then, its “lost” two decades. An expert on Japanese history, culture and society, Patrick relaxes by practicing Nihon Buyo, a traditional form of dance.

Instructors & Group Leaders

These people serve both roles during your program.

Naomi Addyman

Naomi Addyman was born in Tokyo, where her British parents have owned an English language school since the mid-1970s. Educated in Tokyo and Oxford, England, Naomi has traveled to Australia, Canada, Guatemala and South America. She has led explorations on horseback through the rain forests of Queensland, Australia and through the Canadian Rockies; done earthquake relief work in Peru; and worked for a charitable organization educating children living on landfill sites in Guatemala City.
