FYI I have discovered a way around the cell phone problem in Australia and NZ. Download the Messenger app. It's through facebook but is free and downloadable online. It works with android and iphone both. The beauty of it is it is internet operational so all you need is to set your phone on the wi fi or hot spot setting. It's similar to skype or whats up app. I've been using the Messenger app to text my daughters Nancy from MI (Feb 22 trip) I'm packed, are you?? Don't forget your Australian/NZ electrical adapters!

Doing Prog.#20621, ending Invercargill 02/21/16. Anyone interested in renting a car from there to Christchurch, arriving 02/23?

Nancy Hendricks Nov 20, 2015 at 07:40 AM

This is Nancy from MI and I will be doing this program as the last segment of 3 in Australia and New Zealand. Interested in chatting with anyone doing the Feb 22, 2016 trip
Linda Wesseler Dec 20, 2015 at 01:06 PM

We are signed up for that along with the Jan 28 Australian Odyssey. Will have 9 days to travel independently in between programs. Considering renting a camper van to tour the north island then down to Christchurch. Would also like to do the tras

transalpine train trip (all day scenic round-trip) on the south island before the start of our hike, bike & paddle tour.

Linda, your plans sound wonderful and I wish I could. I am doing the Road Scholar Northern Island hiking trip in between Odyssey down under and the Hiking Biking Paddling trip so it won't work, Looking forward to meeting you and Mike. Our MI winter has been creepily (is that a word?) mild with no snow. My petunias are still blooming which is freaky. I am by Lake MI which helps. I leave Dec 31 and traded a US timeshare for one in Cairns Australia. The resort does not list WiFi but I am hopeful to find hotspots. I know my phone won't work. My plan is to join our group at the Christchurch airport coming from a hotel I booked for 2 days in Cathedral Square there. Looking forward to meeting and sharing our favorite experiences down under! nancy hendricks

Which Australian Odyssey trip are you doing? We are booked on the Jan 28 (actually 30th, with date change and travel time from LAX) Aussie Odyyssey. You must be doing an earlier date to get to NZ in time to hike the north island before the arlier date to get toZ in time to hike the north island before the south island hike bike and paddle tour on 2/22?
Linda Wesseler Dec 23, 2015 at 07:28 PM

We ski every year in northern MI, but not this year. Usually Benzie County or where friends have a vacation home at Harbor Springs. Also have friends in Rogers City on Lake Huron. Used to know a cyclist friend from Cincinnati with your name, but you don't look like the same lady,
Nancy Hendricks Dec 23, 2015 at 07:36 PM

yes, Im doing the Odyssey beginning Jan 18 from Sydne. It's such a horrible long flight from MI I thought I'd squeeze it all in with one big trip. Have about 2 days in between segments and I was waitlisted for a long time on the northern hiking NZ portion but finally got included.Been reading Bryson's In a Sunburned Country and enjoying it. Wishing you and your family a merry Christmas and see you soon !!

Judy Brown Mar 04, 2015 at 05:20 PM

My husband Doug and I will also be on this trip - we have also had a crazy Winter here in Texas but not nearly as bad what all of you are dealing with!

Don Howe Sep 02, 2014 at 01:24 AM

Hi Edda...are you from VA originally? I grew up in No. VA just outside DC (Springfield then Woodbridge). I go to VA yearly to visit family/friends. We transferred to AL over 40 years ago...husband was with United Airlines. He passed in 2001 just two years after we retired. My kids were grown, so I started traveling..and love it. It's nice some of you have extra time before/after our long flight over. Can't wait to see NZ...heard so much about it's beautiful scenery. And Frances, I know what you mean about those weather extremes...we're having single digit temps the next 3 days here in AL...colder than AK this week! Even our Gulf coastline is bracing for winter storm this week...burrrrr. Love your HI Toni...got to visit 5 times...we had an airline friend who lived on Maui, also got to the Big Island & Oahu. See you all soon!...Diane McFarland
