I am arriving a day early in a few weeks. For those who have been there I was wondering what you would recommend seeing for a day. Is it easy to get around in Santiago on public transportation/
Sarah "Sally" Everett Sep 12, 2014 at 09:13 PM

When I was in Santiago a few years ago, I took a half day tour to a winery outside the city the day I arrived. I was picked up at the hotel so didn't need public transportation.

I just signed up for the Oct 2014 Atacama/Easter Island trip. This will be my first Roadscholar trip and my first to Chili. I live in Culver City CA (Los Angeles Area). I love deserts and wide open vistas. Also looking forward to to learning about the country and its people. I would love to study up on my Spanish. I'm wondering if there are any participants out there who live in Los Angeles area that are interested in a study group. My Spanish is very rudimentary but use to be adequate for getting around Mexico but only very limited conversationally.

Eleanor: this is a great trip. Both Claudio and Nelson speak English very well and they work well together makinf the trip very informative as well as comfortable. Chile is fantastic. Extremely modern and very vibrant as well as beautful. I have very little command of Spanish and, yet, I was able to get along on my own when I stayed in Chile for a week after the tour.

Steven, Sorry for taking to long to respond; I just relearned how to get back to our discussion board. Thanks for your advice.

An interesting NOVA program aired in Nov. 2012 that featured Carl Lipo and Terry Hunt, the authors of "The Statues That Walked...". The show can be viewed on-line at: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/ancient/mystery-easter-island.html
Perhaps we will get a chance to test the theory of how the Moai were moved.

I will look for this program. Thanks

Looking forward to another Road Scholar trip to Chile. Wife Diane and I had the good fortune of seeing the Southern Ice Fields on the good ship Skorpios III a few years ago. Tour leader was Claudio LeRoy, one of our instructors for this trip.. He encouraged us to come back and visit Easter Island. Will save the story of our once in a lifetime adventure with Claudio until we meet on the trip.

I am arriving a day early, on Feb 22. If anyone else is arriving early and would like to meet for dinner, please let me know.

The Atacama has been on my bucket list for years. It looks as though this trip will finally add it to my desert list. I would guess we can expect windy days and chilly nights. Now if I can just get adept with my camera.

And stars! Millions upon millions of stars visible in the night sky. Amazing place.

Michael, I called to make sure the program was a "go" before booking flights. I've done many Road Scholar trips, a few international, and none have been cancelled. We are also not in a gateway city.

Michael O'Keefe Oct 15, 2012 at 03:32 PM

We are thinking of booking this program for October, 2013, but Judy Parsons' reference to "tried to go" scares me a little since we have had several domestic Road Scholar programs cancelled on us. We are not in a gateway city and do not want to lose nonrefundable direct airfare. Has anyone had experience with cancellation of international programs and how much advance notice Road Scholar gives?
