There were just 10 of us on the Feb 2014 trip. One of the best and our leader, Franz, was great. Everything from the shanty towns of Joburg to the safari were worth seeing. Wait till you see the ostrich chicks pecking through their shell. Loved the penquins, the Elephant sanctuary, everything. On th safari part,we did see the big 5. remember it isn't a zoo so there is no guarantee of what you will view but our group was really lucky.

Michael, Have you checked with Road scholar. The hotels probably aren't a problem but you want to be sure about when we are in the nature parks.

My partner uses a CPAP machine and thus needs electricity next to her bed for the night. (The machine is dual voltage and we will have the appropriate plug adapters so this is not a problem). Does anyone know whether there are places on the trip (and the Victoria Falls extension) where there might be a problem having electricity next to the bed?

Anyone from California on the Feb 12th program. We fly out on the 11th.

J. David Nelson Jan 16, 2014 at 05:36 PM

Susan, my wife and I did this trip one year ago. We did not do the Victoria Falls extension. The trip was terrific. Good balance between the cities and the wildlife.

Susan Sumeri Jan 16, 2014 at 05:07 PM

My husband, Alex, and I are registered to go on the August 20 2014 trip and then think we will do the Victoria Falls extension. Anyone else registered or have comments on a past experience there? Susan

I did the trip last September. It was great. I rather wish I had done extension, but .... didn't. The trip was eye-opening as I knew virtually nothing about South Africa. It is sort of a Readers Digest trip of the country. You see a lot
Michael Fischer Feb 03, 2014 at 05:08 PM

My wife and I just signed up also for the August 20 trip and the extension. Looking forward to it.
Susan Sumeri Feb 03, 2014 at 05:33 PM

Glad to know there are now 4 of us. We're from the Seattle area.

We are from El Cerrito (or as I sometimes call it far North Berkeley). We have made our own flight arrangements flying from Frankfurt on Aug. 20 (change planes in Accra). This will be our second international RS tour (doing India in 2012) and expect it to be as wonderful as the first one.

Thinking about this trip and wondering the best times to see animals and what sorts of animals are typically encountered.
J. David Nelson Oct 15, 2013 at 03:27 PM

George, we spent three plus days in the game reserve. We got up early every monring and went out to find animals. We did the same late in the afternoon. We were typically gone for a minimum of two hours, sometimes longer, as I recall. We saw all kinds of animals: lions, elephants, giraffes, wildebeest (sp?), hippos, all kinds of birds. You name it. Good trip; glad I did it.

Susan and I are leaving from Iowa via Dulles Sept. 27 and taking the extension. Are any other birders on the program?
