Have been burned on road scholar birding trips before ie Mexico. Trip leaders did not have scopes, did not know birds, people came just to go to the country. What is your feel about this one. It is an expensive trip for 2 people to just hike around only. Did really enjoy our Costa Rica trip as we had a very good guide.

I, on the other hand have had very good luck with a number of RS birding trips and have been very pleased with their practice of using local leaders rather than bringing outsiders. I've found that one learns much more about the country as well, that way. This was clearly the poorest I've experienced, but I'm waiting for reports from trips 1 and 3 with a different leader before making a final judgement about the program as a whole. It is probably, however, better for birders with an interest in the ruins and the countries than as a dedicated lister trip.

We like ruins but both are dedicated birders. Problem with some of the birding trips with RS are there are people who just want to go to that country. Many do not have binos, boots, etc.

I have a checklist for all three countries combined derived from Avisys...I think it includes everything (829 species). I have it as a .pdf file which I can either post here or email if someone knows how to do it on this system.

I am going on the Dec 2-17, 2014 trip and would like the checklist in pdf format. just attach it to an e-mail and send it to gwall5@cox.net. I am also looking for a room mate for this trip. - George Wall

I am not sure what bird checklist(s) Road Scholar will provide for this trip, but if anyone is interested, I have created a checklist for the entire trip in Microsoft Word. I am willing to share the file for your own printing. The print is small (font size 7)for the 500+ species and I did not include the Emerald Hummingbird. There is room in the margin to add it. The checklist itself is designed to be printed on an 8.5 x 11 heavyweight paper and folded in half for ease in carrying. I used eBird to select the birds for the list and have ordered the checklist to match Ber Van Perlo's Birds of Mexico and Central America field guide. Plate numbers for illustrations are included. This list does not include every possible bird but those most likely based upon eBird bar charts.

We would be interested a copy of your checklist. Our e-mail is cclem75@gmail.com.

It's on its way!
Linda Kerns Feb 08, 2014 at 02:36 PM

We did the Costa Rica birding trip in 2012 and we were supplied a checklist which we reviewed every evening with our guide. Our list ended with 250+ species identified.

Thanks for the information Linda!
